‘IMAGE IN THE SAND’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

Here we are at the beginning of Season 7 of ‘DS9’. I’ve greatly enjoyed revisiting ‘DS9’ as it truly is a great series. At the time of watching this back in the 2000s, I wondered how the TV show would end.
Season 7 begins with a continuation of the story that began in Season 6 finale ‘Tears of the Prophets’. This leads me to a dilemma as I’m not sure if ‘Image in the Sand’ is part of a three-parter.
It could easily be argued as ‘part one’ of a two-part story at the beginning of Season 7. As such, I’m going to consider this as a standalone episode despite having links to a past and following episode. 😐
In the episode, Sisko has taken extended leave on Earth for three months. Kira Nerys is still in charge of the space station and is promoted to the rank of Colonel. Must remember not to call her Major! 🙂
Worf meanwhile is still grieving for the loss of his wife Jadzia. He’s also getting fed up of having to do convoy duty when being in command of the Defiant and wants to get out there and fight in battle. 😐
On Earth, Sisko is distancing himself from his family whilst playing piano at his father’s restaurant. His son Jake is concerned and so is his father, Brock Peters as Joseph Sisko as he runs his restaurant.
Eventually, Sisko experiences a vision from the Prophets. He sees himself digging frantically in the sand on the planet Tyree, uncovering the face of a woman whom he does not recognise. Interesting!
It’s gradually revealed by his father Joseph that the face belongs to Sisko’s biological mother Sarah. It turns out she abandoned the family when Sisko was one year old and she tragically died afterwards.
Sisko’s father also gives his son a necklace that once belonged to Sarah. Apparently it has some ancient Bajoran writing on it. The writing reads ‘Orb of the Emissary’. This does mean hope for Bajor.
Deciding to travel to Tyree in search for the Orb, Sisko is attacked one night by a member of a Pah-wraith cult which have been gaining strength in reaction to the wormhole’s closure. Sisko is stabbed.
Thankfully Sisko survives the following day to tell the tale. As Sisko is healed and is about to leave for Tyree, his son Jake and his father Joseph decide to go with him. It sounds like a nice family outing. 😀
Meanwhile on DS9, the Romulan Empire establishes a small delegation on the station. Colonel Kira isn’t very happy with this, but Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross insists on cooperating with the Romulans.
The delegation is led by Megan Cole as Senator Cretak. At first, Cretak seems a genuinely friendly Romulan who wants to work well with Kira. Kira does her best to be friendly to Cretak in return here.
Cretak eventually asks Kira to petition the Bajoran government to allow the Romulans to set up a hospital on the uninhabited moon of Derna. Kira agrees but Odo reports something disturbing to her. 😐
It transpires the Romulan hospital is turning away wounded Starfleet personell and appears to be heavily armed. Kira demands and threatens Cretak that the weapons to be removed immediately. 😐
I liked the opening scene Kira and Odo shared, especially when they talk about the kiss they shared together in ‘His Way’. Kira is finding Odo to be more optimistic since the time that they had that kiss.
Back with Worf, things aren’t any easier with him overcoming his grief of losing Jadzia. He’s quite hard on Aron Eisenberg as Nog and even ruins James Darren as Vic Fontaine’s place in the holosuite.
This is when Vic sang Jadzia’s favourite Sinarta song ‘All the Way’. Chief O’Brien later learns from Worf that he’s worried Jadzia won’t enter Klingon heaven Sto’Vo’Kor since she didn’t die in battle. 😐
J.G. Hertzler as General Martok soon recruits Worf to join him on a dangerous mission that will ensure Jadzia’s place in Sto’Vo’Kor. O’Brien and Bashir decide to accompany Worf and honour Jadzia.
The episode also features Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun and Casey Biggs as Damar as they discuss tactics on the Dominion War at Cardassia’s end. They soon hear of the rift between the Romulans and Bajor.
‘Image in the Sand’ ends with a young Starfleet ensign – a Trill – meeting up with Sisko before he, Jake and Joseph leave for Tyree. Sisko doesn’t recognise her. She’s Nicole de Boer as Ensign Ezri ‘Dax’.
‘Image of the Sand’ (DS9) rating – 8/10
