‘HIS WAY’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is a ‘DS9’ episode that my Dad was looking forward to seeing. And I can see why since it’s got plenty of Frank Sinarta/jazzy songs sung in the episode. I like it for being a good Odo/Kira love story.
In the episode, we’re introduced to a new character in the series. This happens to be James Darren as Vic Fontaine. He is a 1960s Las Vegas lounge singer who happens to know that he is a hologram. 🙂
James Darren is also a singer as well as an actor in real-life. He did put me in mind of Tony Jacobs who I’ve seen at jazz ‘conventions’ over the years. It was nice to have a jazz-style theme in this story.
Bashir introduces Vic Fontaine to his friends including Odo, Kira, Worf, Jadzia and O’Brien. They’re surprised to find Vic is aware he’s a hologram and he seems to understand a lot about relationships.
Vic is aware that Worf and Jadzia are married and that Odo is missing Keiko but still looks at pretty ladies. 😀 He also notices Odo and Kira, but he stops himself from making a comment about them. 😐
After leaving Vic in the holosuite, it’s revealed Kira is about to travel to Bajor to meet up with her ex-lover Shakaar. Whilst Kira’s away, Odo decides to visit Vic in the holosuite and ask for some advice. 🙂
Vic is clearly aware that Odo is in love with Kira but is afraid to pursue. He also notices that Kira considers himself as a friend than as a lover. Vic tells Odo his obstacle is being ‘reserved’ and ‘aloof’.
He finds ways for Odo to ‘have some fun’ and he has him perform on piano during a show. This is where Vic gets to sing ‘Come Fly with Me’ and he does sing the song in its entirety during that scene.
Afterwards, Vic arranges a double date with a pair of holographic women – Debi A. Monahan as Melissa and Cyndia Pass a Ginger. Odo begins to feel more relaxed in his day-to-day life after that. 🙂
This is clearly demonstrated when Odo sings ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’ in Sisko’s office. Sisko seems to enjoy Odo singing the song out loud and he joins in with the singing too. Great scene!
The next time Odo visits the holosuite, Vic arranges for Odo to meet a holographic singer who looks like Kira – Lola Chrystal. This gives Nana Visitor a chance to sing as well when she’s performing ‘Fever’.
Apparently, Vic got the holographic image of Kira from the Season 4 episode ‘Our Man Bashir’. Thankfully though, he got rid of that fake Russian accent that Kira’s character had in that episode. 😀
Sadly, Odo isn’t able to connect with ‘Lola Chrystal’ since she doesn’t encompass Kira’s personality. He knows he is comfortable with her because she is a hologram. Becoming frustrated; Odo leaves. 😦
Once Kira returns to DS9, Vic is keen to take matters into his own hands. He invites Kira to dinner on Odo’s behalf and soon persuades Odo to come to the holosuite to see an improved Kira hologram. 😐
Odo and Kira meet in the holosuite and have their first romantic date. They soon dance at Vic’s club, but it’s soon revealed to Odo that Kira is actually real and not a hologram and that Vic tricked him. 😐
Angered and embarrassed by this, Odo leaves the holosuite. He refuses to talk to Vic on the intercom as well when he is in his office. But how does Kira feel about this following this revelation?
Well, as it turns out the next day, Kira has two clarities of thought and she confronts Odo that they need to discuss what happened over dinner, preferably not in a holosuite. Odo is not sure about this.
Kira reassures Odo that her trip to see Shakaar was strictly business and that she’s not seeing him anymore. And…you know what? Watch the scene between Odo and Kira, as it’s a pretty good scene.
After so many episodes of wanting to see Odo and Kira together, we finally get it here. And it was well-worth it. This for me is a lovely romantic episode for Odo and Kira finally together as a couple. 🙂
At the episode’s end, Odo stops by the holosuite and thanks Vic for his help. Vic also sings the song ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ which Frank Sinarta performed and I’ve included it in ‘The Space Hotel’.
‘His Way’ is definitely one of my favourite ‘DS9’ episodes as I’m so glad to see Odo and Kira together as a couple and it was nice to see Vic Fontaine introduced with his jazz singing and music included. 🙂
