‘TEARS OF THE PROPHETS’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

‘Tears of the Prophets’ is the season finale to Season 6 of ‘Star Trek: DS9’. It’s a pretty exciting episode to close Season 6, but it’s also a heartbreaking one as it features the departure of a regular.
In the episode, Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross informs Captain Sisko that Starfleet intends to go on the offensive in the war against the Dominion. They have chosen Sisko to plan the invasion of Cardassia.
It’s decided to attack the Chin’toka star system within Cardassian territory. Starfleet must attack soon though as intelligence arrives that the Cardassians the Dominion are to improve their defences.
Whilst all this is going on, Worf and Jadzia discuss plans about having a baby. Bashir and Quark are clearly put out by this, especially since they had strong feelings for Jadzia before she married Worf. 😦
I like that scene where Bashir and Quark visit James Darren as Vic Fontaine in the holosuite. He gives them words of encouragement and wisdom. He also sings that Sinarta song ‘Here’s to the Losers’. 😀
There is a little subplot where Kira and Odo have an argument after Odo ‘arrested’ a Vedek during a Bajoran festival. But Kira still wants to see Odo in their relationship whilst he thinks that it’s all over.
It did seem like Kira conveniently forgot about what Odo did in arresting a Vedek, especially when she made a big deal out of it earlier on. But I like how she forgives him and that they’re still together.
Back with Sisko, on the night before the attack on the Chin’toka system, Sisko receives a vision from the Prophets. They warn him not to leave the station and not to go with the invasion of Cardassia. 😐
Sisko is troubled and he tells Ross about the vision he received from the Prophets. Ross tells Sisko he must decide between his duty to Starfleet and the Prophets. Sisko soon chooses the lead the attack.
With the Cardassian-Dominion forces, Casey Biggs as Damar and Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun receive an unexpected visit from Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat. He wishes to unleash an enemy of the Prophets.
Apparently the Cardassians have been keeping a Bajoran artefact which contains a Pah-wraith. Once Dukat has the artefact, he breaks it open and soon a red mist enters his body and it possesses him. 😐
The Pah-wraith is inside Dukat as he wishes to use it to get revenge on Sisko. Weyoun is sceptical of Dukat’s plan, considering the Bajoran religion superstitious despite considering the Founders ‘gods’.
Very soon, the attack on the Chin’toka is underway with Federation ships; Klingon ships led by J. G. Hertzler as General Martok and Romulan ships attacking. The space battle is pretty impressive to watch.
This is especially when Jem’Hadar ships go crazy and crash into Klingon ships during the battle. Aron Eisenberg as Nog and Andrew Robinson as Garak are on board the Defiant during the space battle. 🙂
Meanwhile, back on DS9, Jadzia Dax visits the Bajoran temple in gratification of having a baby. She’s soon met by Dukat and she’s attacked by him with the Pah-wraith inside him. She’s injured severely.
Dukat also opens an Orb of the Prophets with the Pah-wraith leaving his body and entering the Orb, turning it black. Soon, the Bajoran wormhole in space implodes, cutting off the Prophets from Bajor.
On the Defiant, Sisko is shaken, sensing the attack on the Prophets. Kira takes his place. The invasion attack is successful with the weapon platforms destroyed, but they’re soon summoned back to DS9.
Back on DS9, they find the wormhole gone and the Bajoran Orbs turned back. Bashir saves the Dax symbiont but can’t save Jadzia. She survives long enough to say goodbye to Worf, but she soon dies.
It was really heartbreaking to see Jadzia exit that way. I’m not sure why Terry Farrell decided to leave at the end of Season 6, but it’s a pity she didn’t stay long enough till the show came to an end.
Worf is upset, letting out a guttural roar after Jadzia’s death, and Sisko is upset too, as he believes he’s failed her as well as Starfleet and the Prophets. Sisko soon decides to take a leave of absence. 😦
He and Jake leave DS9 to return to Earth where his father’s restaurant in New Orleans is. Kira is left in charge of DS9, but there’s no knowing whether Sisko will be back. Will Sisko return in Season 7? 😐
‘Tears of the Prophets’ is a very dramatic episode to close off Season 6. I felt saddened by Jadzia’s exit and it was such a shocker. It also leaves the series on an open-note on how things will continue.
On Disc 7 of the ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Season 6’ DVD, as well as ‘Mission Inquiry: Far Beyond the Stars’; ’24th Century Wedding’ and ‘Gary Hutzel on ‘One Little Ship’, there are the documentaries ‘Crew Dossier: Julian Bashir’, ‘Crew Dossier: Quark’, ‘Deep Space Nine Sketchbook: John Eaves’, ‘Ferengi Rules of Acquisition: The Beginning’ and ‘Ferengi Rules of Acquisition: The Sequel’. There’s also a photo gallery and some Section 31 hidden files.
