SPOILERS ALERT!!!
Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
I’m continuing to enjoy the ‘Supergirl’ TV series via ITVX and have just finished Season 4. 🙂 Season 4 of ‘Supergirl’ has been a captivating and engaging season with plenty of plot twists involving characters and the performances of the cast are exceptionally excellent!
Melissa Benoist continues to impress me as Kara Danvers/Supergirl and it’s been fascinating to see how Supergirl endures challenges throughout Season 4. This includes racial prejudice between aliens and humans, and her sister Alex losing part of her memory.
In Season 4, there are rising anti-alien hate groups led by Agent Liberty. Kara Danvers must uncover a massive conspiracy going on in relation to these anti-hate groups and it involves the return of criminal mastermind Lex Luthor who utilises a Russian clone of her.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when checking out Season 4 of ‘Supergirl’, especially when the themes of prejudice and racial hatred against aliens on Earth are pretty relevant to how things are in the real world. And this season was shown from late 2018 to early 2019!
The season contains 22 episodes altogether. As well as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Melissa Benoist plays Red Daughter, the Russian clone of Kara. It was fascinating to uncover Red Daughter’s role in Lex Luthor’s master scheme when viewing the episode ‘The House of L’.
Mehcad Brooks returns as James Olsen in the season. We don’t see much of James as the superhero Guardian, as he gets to be that earlier in Season 4. Sadly, he breaks up with Lena Luthor, and he ends up getting shot before he’s saved but he receives superpowers.
Chyler Leigh returns as Alex Danvers, who starts as the new head of the D.E.O. (the Department of Extranormal Operations) before April Parker Jones as Colonel Lauren Haley comes to take charge. Alex is also sadly made to forget Kara is Supergirl for a while.
Katie McGrath returns as Lena Luthor and undergoes her own set of challenges, including dealing with her brother Lex Luthor before finding out Kara is Supergirl by the season’s end. There’s Jesse Rath returns as ‘Brainy’, who made his debut in Season 3 of ‘Supergirl’.
Essentially, Brainy is filling in Winn’s role at the D.E.O. with being a tech-know-all. David Harewood also returns as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter, who struggles to keep the peace in National City whilst not being a part of the D.E.O. after he made Alex its head. 😐
Sam Witwer stars as Ben Lockwood a.k.a. Agent Liberty, who starts the anti-alien hate campaign and he loses his family in the process. 😐 There’s also Nicole Maines as Nia Nal who becomes the new superhero Dreamer and she works alongside Supergirl in the TV series.
Other characters that appear in Season 4 of ‘Supergirl’ including Rhona Mitra as Mercy Graves, Robert Baker as Otis Graves, Anthony Konechny as Raymond Jensen/Parasite, Bruce Boxleitner as Phil Baker and Andrea Brooks as Eve Teschmacher who ends up being bad.
There’s Sarah Smyth as Lydia Lockwood and Graham Verchere as George Lockwood, Ben Lockwood’s family. Xander Berkeley guest stars as Peter Lockwood, Ben Lockwood’s father who sadly dies in the third episode of Season 4 where we get to know Ben Lockwood.
There’s David Ajala as Manchester Black, who becomes a bad guy when Ben Lockwood and his Agent Liberty group cause his fiancée’s death in the season. Tiya Sircar guest stars as Fiona Bryne, Manchester’s fiancée. Manchester becomes J’onn’s enemy in the season. 😐
The cast also includes Jessica Meraz as Pamela Ferrer/Menagerie, Azie Tesfai as Kelly Olsen, James’ sister, and Jon Cryer (who played Lenny Luthor in ‘Superman IV: The Quest for Peace’) as Lex Luthor. I found Jon Cryer’s interpretation of Lex Luthor very good in ‘Supergirl’ and I’m sure we won’t be seeing the last of him after Season 4. 😀
Lydia Carter returns as U.S. President Olivia Marsdin and Brenda Strong returns as Lillian Luthor, Lex and Lena’s mother. Calista Flockhart returns for an uncredited appearance as Cat Grant in the third episode of Season 4 of ‘Supergirl’. One that I didn’t expect to see. 😀
There’s Vincent Gale as Dr. Rohan Vose, Cardi Wong as Kesse Kay, Fulvio Cecere as Massimo, Abby Ross as an ‘alien student’, Justice Leak as Hellgrammite, Adam Levy as Amadei Derros, Kweis Ameyaw as Cassin, Michelle Krusiec as Natalie Hawkings and Shannon Chan-Kent as Elizabeth Hawkings. 🙂
Helen Slater (who played Supergirl in the 1984 film) returns as Eliza Danvers, Alex’s mother and Kara’s adoptive mother. It’s nice to see her again. 🙂 I’n currently wondering what’s become of Dean Cain’s character of Jeremiah Danvers, as we’ve not seen him for a while.
There’s Steve Byers as Tom, Michael Johnston as Adam, Roxy Wood as Yvette and Russell Wong as General Alfonso Tan. The cast also includes Hannah James as Maeve Nal, Kate Burton as Isabel Nal, Garwin Sanfrod as Paul Nal and there’s Brennan Mejia playing Jerry.
Lukas Gage guest stars as Kevin Huggins along with Brian Cyburt as Spencer, Françoise Robertson as Sarah Walker, Louis Ozawa Changchien as Hat, Michael Adamthwaite as Cooper, William MacDonald as Dr. Kaplan and Gabriel Gurevich guest stars as Mikhail. 🙂
There’s Jonathan Bennett as Quentin, Jill Morrison as Bitsie Teschmacher, Karin Konoval as Senator Granberry, Parveen Dosanjh as Dr. Park, Willie Garson as Steve Lomeli, Emily Tennant as Edna, Patti Allan as Margot Morrison. There are also J’onzz characters in this.
Carl Lumbly returns as M’yrnn J’onzz, J’onn J’onzz’s father, who previously appeared in Season 3 and appears in two episodes in Season 4. There’s also Phil LaMarr as the voice of Malefic J’onzz, who happens to be J’onn’s brother and he appears at the end of Season 4.
There’s the three-part DC superheroes crossover event in Season 4 called ‘Elseworlds’, which features Supergirl teaming up with the Flash and Green Arrow. I enjoyed ‘Elseworlds’ as a crossover event more than ‘Crisis on Earth-X’ in Season 3. The story was easier to follow for me.
Interestingly, the structure of ‘Elseworlds’ goes like this. ‘Part 1’ happens in Season 5, Episode 9 of ‘The Flash’, ‘Part 2’ happens in Season 7, Episode 9 of ‘Arrow’ and ‘Part 3’ happens in Season 4, Episode 9 of ‘Supergirl’. You have to check online to find this out. 🙂
In ‘Elseworlds’, Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl reunites with Stephen Arnell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow and Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/the Flash. There’s also John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen/the Flash, who comes from Earth-90 to provide a warning. 😐
There’s LaMonica Garrett as Mar Novu/the Monitor, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon and Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow and Killer Frost. Tyler Hoechlin makes a return as Clark Kent/Superman in the ‘Elseworlds’ story with Supergirl.
He also plays John Deegan, who becomes an alternative version of Superman. John Deegan is originally played by Jeremy Davies in the ‘Elseworlds’ story. There’s also Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman. This happens to be my very first experience of Batwoman. 😮
There’s also Cassandra Jean Arnell as Nora Fries, Adam Tsekhman as Gary Green and Bob Frazer as Roger Hayden/Psycho-Pirate. Elizabeth Tulloch also appears Lois Lane, who I’ve seen in Season 1 of ‘Superman & Lois’. It’s lovely to see her in ‘Elseworlds’. 🙂
Season 4 of ‘Supergirl’ has been great to check out. I’ve enjoyed every instalment of Season 4 and I’m looking forward to checking out more in Season 5. Like ‘Lois & Clark’, the ‘Supergirl’ TV series has become something of a religious viewing for every evening. 😀
I find myself thoroughly engaged with the stories and the characters and Melissa Benoist continues to lead the TV show in spades. I’m wondering what’s going to happen next in Season 5. I’m certain the storytelling and the character development will be very satisfying.
Off to check out Season 5 of ‘Supergirl’! 🙂
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
Tim 🙂
