At this point in time, I’ll soon be seeing Sarah Sutton and Sophie Aldred at the ‘Wigan Comic Con Summer 2026’ event this weekend. In preparation for that, I’ve listened to an episode of ‘Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey’ podcast series with Sarah Sutton as a special guest. 🙂

I’ve greatly enjoyed checking out the episode. It was my first experience of ‘Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey’ podcast series and it was nice to hear Sophie interview Sarah in the episode about her life and career before, during and after the ‘Doctor Who’ series.

It’s clear from listening to the episode that Sarah and Sophie are very good friends when they’re chatting to each other. It’s also nice how Sophie engages with Sarah on the various aspects of her acting career as well as discussing what Sarah’s likes and dislikes happen to be.

The aspects of Sarah’s career that get covered include her first acting role as Baby Roo in ‘Winnie the Pooh’ in the 1970-71 theatre production and being in the ‘Menace’ episode ‘Boys and Girls Come Out to Play’, ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’, ‘The Crucible’ and ‘The Moon Stallion’.

Some of these pre-‘Doctor Who’ roles are ones that I’ve had the chance to interview Sarah about, including ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘The Moon Stallion’. It was refreshing to hear Sophie chat to Sarah about her roles in the podcast episode and hear familiar points raised.

One production that I haven’t seen Sarah in yet and that’s ‘The Crucible’, which was released in 1980. I need to check out that production sometime, as I know it’s available on YouTube. A shame that the ‘Meance’ episode ‘Boys and Girls Come Out to Play’ is currently missing.

It was fascinating to hear Sarah and Sophie chat about ‘Doctor Who’ and how they compared their experiences of working on the classic TV show. Sarah shares the trials and tribulations of working on ‘Doctor Who’, including being part of the crowded TARDIS in 1982.

Sarah shares how much ‘Black Orchid’ is one of her favourite ‘Doctor Who’ stories, though she also shares she didn’t think she was very good in that TV story. It was intriguing to hear that, as she felt she didn’t get enough direction from director Ron Jones.

It was also saddening when hearing from Sarah that she and Matthew got told off by presumably Peter Grimwade for causing a lot of hilarity during the making of ‘Time-Flight’. Although, I’m sure that must’ve been Ron Jones, since he was the director of the TV story.

Either way, it’s rather unfair. I’m sure Sarah wouldn’t have caused a lot of hilarity despite ‘Time-Flight’ being considered a disaster of a ‘Doctor Who’ story. It’s fascinating Sarah shared about her working as a grown-up on TV compared to working as a child actress on TV.

The Big Finish audios of ‘Doctor Who’ that Sarah appears in are touched upon as well as her being involved in the early USA conventions in the 1980s, including ones for Chicago and Tulsa. Sarah’s not keen on cabaret, although I wish I could see Sarah’s cabarets at conventions. 🙂

As well as interviewing Sarah, there’s a narrative that’s going on throughout the podcast episode where Sophie is aboard the Nosferatu 2.5 with James Showers as Hobbes. I’m not familiar with the Nosferatu 2.5 storyline that Sophie has in her podcast series.

I’ll need to hear more episodes of ‘Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey’ to understand it. It was nice to hear Sarah take part in the Nosferatu 2.5 storyline, especially when she arrives aboard the Nosferatu 2.5 and when she leaves. Most of it is very lighthearted and entertaining. 🙂

Sophie also interviews Dr. Adam Scovell, who is a writer and filmmaker. Apparently, he’s the author of ‘Folk Horror: Hours Dreadful and Things Strange’. I’ve not come across Dr. Adam Scovell before, but it was really nice to hear him share his memory of first meeting Sophie Aldred.

Apparently, he met Sophie when he was eight-years-old along with Sylvester McCoy, Lisa Bowerman and Will Barton from ‘Survival’. It was quite fascinating to hear him share how ‘Doctor Who’ inspired him with becoming a writer, filmmaker and doctor over the years.

The Sarah Sutton episode of ‘Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey’ is about 1 hour and 40 minutes. I checked it out on Audible and had to listen to it over the course of two days, but it was nice to hear this podcast episode where Sophie Aldred interviews Sarah Sutton.

I’m very glad that I’ve heard it before going to see Sarah and Sophie in person again at the ‘Wigan Comic Con Summer 2026’ this weekend. Hopefully, I’ll find some time to check out more episodes of ‘Sophie Aldred’s Ace Odyssey’ podcast series with other special guest stars.
