Polly meets John Eliot Maurice
This story is by Simon Guerrier and it features Polly. I found this a really good short story where Polly goes for an interview as a personal secretary to John Eliot Maurice, who happens to be a music manager. It’s a nice little character piece. It was easy to read, especially in my second reading of it. 🙂
Simon Guerrier also provides a fascinating depiction of an older Polly. I liked the references made to Polly’s adventures with the Doctor, especially when she mentions that she walked on the moon in ‘The Moonbase’. Neil Armstrong also gets a mention when Polly is talking about him in this little tale.
When Maurice mentions about meeting the Doctor himself, Polly assumes he’s talking about the Second Doctor and his Scottish companion Jamie. But it seems that Maurice was talking about the Seventh Doctor, who had a Scottish accent, and his teenage companion. Pretty intriguing revelation!
It’s implied that Polly is no longer married, meaning she might have separated from Ben in their marriage. I don’t know if Polly was fibbing or if she was telling the truth that she and Ben are no longer together. Ben’s name isn’t even mentioned. I assume Polly and Ben did remarry in later life. 😐
Apparently, a younger girl was going for the same job as Polly. She’s an Australian and used to be a stewardess. The story doesn’t say she’s Tegan, but it’s likely to be her, isn’t it? ‘Curriculum Vitae’ has been an enjoyable and fascinating short story to read. It’s intriguing how it fits in with an older Polly.
