Ben and Polly Reunite on New Year’s Eve 1986
This story called ‘Mondas Passing’ is by Paul Grice. It features Polly and Ben. Apparently, Paul Grice is another pseudonym for Stephen Cole. ‘Mondas Passing’ is the first of two stories in the ‘Short Trips’ book that Paul Grice is used as pseudonym. This story is also one of the shortest in the anthology. 🙂
In ‘Mondas Passing’, Ben and Polly reunite on New Year’s Eve in 1986 in a hotel room to reminisce about their travels with the Doctor. They also reminisce about their experience at the Snowcap space tracking station in Antarctica involving the Cybermen, which happened in ‘The Tenth Planet’. 🙂
It’s interesting to read how this story coincides with the events of ‘The Tenth Planet’ and how Ben and Polly reunite following their departure from the TARDIS in ‘The Faceless Ones’. Apparently, in the 20 years since they left the TARDIS, Ben and Polly had a relationship, but they soon separated. 😦
They married other people instead. The impression is given that Ben and Polly only reunite on certain days when they visited Earth in the future during their TARDIS travels. The next one is likely to be 2070 when they visited Earth’s moon in ‘The Moonbase’, although I don’t see that happening.
They’re likely to be dead by then. I’m not sure I enjoyed this story for that. Mind you, Ben and Polly would be married by the time of ‘The Five Companions’, and they do open an orphanage in India by 2010, according to ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ story ‘Death of the Doctor’, so it can’t be that bad. 🙂
‘Mondas Passing’ rating – 6/10
