‘TWISTED’ (VOY)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is a ‘Voyager’ episode you either like or you loathe. I personally quite like this ‘Voyager’ episode, especially with the tension that is filled throughout it. Mind you, its ending can be very debatable. 😐
The episode starts with a birthday party for Kes in one of the holodecks. It’s actually Kes’ second birthday, since the Ocampa lifespan is about up to 9 years. Kes is quite amazed by the surprise party.
In attendance are Neelix (of course), Captain Janeway, Chakotay, B’Elanna, Tom Paris and the Doctor. Tom even gives a locket as a present to Kes, to which Neelix becomes jealous upon seeing. 😐
The holodeck program that’s running is Tom Paris’ Chez Sandríne program. As well as the Voyager crew present, there is also Larry Hankin as Gaunt Gary and Judy Geeson as Sandrine in the program.
Only Tuvok and Harry Kim aren’t present when Kes’ birthday party is taking place, as they’re on the bridge. Harry is keen to attend the birthday party, but Voyager soon encounters an odd energy field.
Tuvok tries to inform Captain Janeway about the strange phenomenon that Voyager has encountered. But the communications systems soon fail, as Voyager becomes stuck in the odd field.
Unable to communicate with Tuvok, Janeway and the others decide to return to their posts. However, the ship’s layout has mysteriously changed and many are unable to find their way back. 😐
Janeway, Chakotay and Tom try to get to the bridge, but they end up in engineering. B’Elanna tries to get to engineering, but she ends up in a transporter room where Tom Virtue as Baxter is also lost.
Kes and Neelix try to find Kes’ quarters but they soon end up back outside the holodeck. Eventually, everybody else including Janeway, Chakotay, Tom and B’Elanna end up back outside the holodeck. 😐
Thankfully, Harry Kim has been able to join them. 😀 Why do I get the feeling that the Voyager crew getting lost in the labyrinth corridors almost echoes the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Horns of Nimon’? 🙂
The Doctor himself has trouble returning to sickbay since he always ends up back in the holodeck. He also finds himself amorously pursued by the hologram Sandrine and he tries to resist her advances. 🙂
Neelix also continues to be jealous of Tom Paris’ relationship with Kes. This aspect of Neelix’s character can be annoying at times, especially when he brings up his jealously to people like Chakotay.
This is when some of the Voyager crew are attempting to find ways to get to various places by taking different routes and they split up into groups. Tom thankfully manages to get B’Elanna to engineering. 🙂
Unfortunately, when they try to transport themselves to the bridge using the engineering transporters, they end up back in the holodeck. Tom and B’Elanna end up standing on the pool table in Chez Sandríne.
Tuvok also meets up with Chakotay and Neelix after having left the bridge. Chakotay and Tuvok soon lose Neelix when he wanders off by himself. Soon, they end up back in the holodeck with everybody.
Janeway and Harry try to get to the bridge via a Jeffries’ tube, but Janeway gets her hand caught in the energy field when going through the tube. She becomes delirious after she comes into contact. 🙁
She’s brought back to the holodeck for the Doctor to attend to her, but there’s little he can do without having access to his medical equipment. I thought he would’ve had it on hand at Kes’ party. 😐
B’Elanna tries to stop the energy field in engineering with a ship-wide energy burst, but it makes things worse, causing the field to envelop the ship at an accelerated rate. It appears that hope is lost.
Thankfully, Tuvok has an idea. He suggests they do nothing. Everyone is shocked by this idea, but they gradually decide to go through with it and hope for the best. Thankfully, everybody is alright. 🙂
The energy field passes through them and Voyager is soon restored to normal. Janeway is also back to normal and Neelix returns, carrying the fudge birthday cake they were going to have at Kes’ party.
Apparently, the energy field was somehow sentient and 20 million gigaquads of data have been uploaded to Voyager’s computer. The ship’s memory has also been downloaded in the process here.
This is something I don’t think gets brought up again as the ‘Voyager’ series continues. Despite that, I enjoyed ‘Twisted’. I quite like how things gets resolved with the solution of ‘doing nothing’ involved. Biroc from ‘Warriors’ Gate’ would be proud. 😀
I wouldn’t say this ‘Voyager’ episode is one of the best in the series. It can be mindboggling in places and the ‘hope for the best’ solution can be debated among people, but I have quite a soft spot for this episode.
‘Twisted’ (VOY) rating – 7/10
