‘THE MAGNIFICENT FERENGI’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This ‘DS9’ episode’s title is obviously a rip-off to that 1960 film ‘The Magnificent Seven’. Although I should point out its six Ferengi who are the heroes of this, not seven! Unless you count Moogie too!

In the episode, Quark receives a message from Grand Nagus Zek. Quark’s mother Ishka (Moogie) has been captured by the Dominion. Zek wants Quark to go and rescue his mother from the Dominion. 😐

Moogie is also Zek’s lover and financial adviser by this point. Zek offers Quark a reward of 50 bars of gold-pressed latinum should he rescue her. Quark has his brother Rom help him to rescue Moogie. 🙂

They try to assemble an all-Ferengi commando team to rescue Moogie. They are to claim that the reward will be 20 bars of latinum to the other Ferengi so that Quark and Rom can have a large share.

As well as Max Grodénchik as Rom, there’s also Aron Eisenberg as Nog joining the team. There’s also Hamilton Camp as Leck, a Ferengi ‘eliminator’; and Josh Pais as Gaila, Quark’s weapon-selling cousin.

Jeffrey Combs as Brunt also joins the team. He’s now a disgraced ex-Liquidator and wishes to win Zek’s favour. Quark and the others don’t want him until he happens to have a ship they can utilise. 😐

At first, it doesn’t go very well since the Ferengi turn out to be poor commandos during battle-training simulations. Leck even kills Ishka in one of them. Quark gets very frustrated about this here.

Thankfully, Rom comes up with the idea that they need to be excellent negotiators rather than commanders. Instead of attacking the Dominion, they decide to propose a prisoner exchange here. 🙂

Quark is given custody of Christopher Shea as Keevan, a Vorta, by Captain Sisko and Major Kira. Keevan was in the episode ‘Rocks and Shoals’. The Ferengi team arrange to meet with the Dominion.

They meet at the abandoned space station Empok Nor, which was in…well, ‘Empok Nor’. 😀 The Ferengi arrive there early and make base camp in Empok Nor’s infirmary. So far, so good already! 😀

Quark, Rom and Nog soon meet up with a Vorta negotiator, Iggy Pop as Yelgrun. He and the Jem’Hadar have Cecily Adams as Ishka in custody. Some you know may know who Iggy Pop is in this.

Apparently he’s a famous singer and musician as well as an actor. Now I wouldn’t have picked this up since I’ve not come across Iggy Pop before. I found him good as a Vorta character in this ‘DS9’ episode.

Yelgrun wishes for this transaction to be sorted as swiftly as possible. Quark makes the teams for his Jem’Hadar quad to dissipate. Yelgrun agrees. They’re to make the prison exchange in half an hour. 🙂

The Ferengi celebrate their soon-to-be-successful exchange until Rom accidentally lets out that the reward is actually 50 bars of latinum, not 20. The rest of the Ferengi are very angry with Quark here.

Galia, Quark’s cousin, ends up shoot Keevan accidentally. Quark tells Galia what an idiot he is but he’s determined not to give up. He persuades the team to likewise do so and he offers equal shares.

Nog meanwhile discovers a way to make the dead Keevan walk as he applies some neural stimulators onto him. He operates Keevan via remote control whilst the prison exchange takes here.

The prisoner exchange takes place. Yelgrum doesn’t realise Keevan’s dead until after Moogie is safely with Quark. Keevan walks into a bulkhead. The ruse is unveiled to Yelgrum and the Jem’Hadar.

Thankfully, the Ferengi ambush the two Jem’Hadar accompanying Yelgrum and they take Yelgrum prisoner as well. Moogie is happy to be reunited with his family again and is really proud with Quark.

The Ferengi gang soon leave Empok Nor whilst Keevan’s dead body continues to walk into the bulkhead. How long he’ll last bumping into the bulkhead with the neural stimulators, I don’t know. 🙂

Chase Masterson also appears as Leeta in the episode’s opening scene. I also wish Jeffrey Combs played Weyoun in the episode as a meeting between Weyoun and Brunt would’ve been fantastic. 😀

‘The Magnificent Ferengi’ is definitely one of the most enjoyable episodes in the ‘DS9’ series. I enjoyed how Quark and Rom got a team of Ferengi to help them rescue Moogie from the Dominion.
