‘SONS OF MOGH’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

It’s time for another Worf episode in the ‘DS9’ series! It’s also an episode where Worf deals with the consequences of his recent discommendation by the Klingon Empire since ‘The Way of the Warrior’.

In the episode, Worf receives an unexpected visit from his younger brother, Tony Todd as Kurn. Kurn has been in the ‘TNG’ series, appearing in ‘Sins of the Father’ and the two-part story ‘Redemption’. 🙂

Tony Todd previously played an older Jake Sisko in ‘The Visitor’. Kurn arrives on DS9 in a drunken state, demanding to see Worf. He wants Worf to honour him by killing him in the Mauk-to’Vor ritual.

Since ‘The Way of the Warrior’, Worf brought dishonour upon the House of Mogh after rejecting the Klingon Empire’s war with the Cardassian Empire. Worf’s family has been stripped of everything it had.

Its wealth, its honour and political power! Worf has been comfortable being aboard DS9 whilst Kurn has lost everything he had. He wants Worf to give him the honour he can have by ritually killing him.

Worf agrees to conduct the ritual and kill his brother and has it take place in his quarters in DS9. Why Worf couldn’t do it on a planet away from everyone else catching him in the act, I don’t know.

Anyway, Jadzia, who has been getting close to Worf, finds out what he’s doing. She and Odo rush in to interrupt the ceremony after Kurn gets stabbed by Worf. Thankfully, Bashir is able to save Kurn. 🙂

Sisko however is far from happy, letting out his anger on both Worf and Jadzia in his office. In the eyes of Sisko, Worf was committing murder. In a Klingon’s eyes, it’d be seen as an honourable death.

As Worf can’t kill his brother in the ritual again and as Kurn places his life in his brother’s hands, Worf asks Odo to let him be in his security team. Odo agrees and Kurn does perform well in his role.

Sadly, it’s short-lived as Kurn loses his job when he allows himself to be shot without any attempt to defend himself. Clearly Kurn wants to get killed off at the quickest opportunity he can find, I believe.

Meanwhile, in deep space, O’Brien and Kira have been detecting mysterious explosions and cloaked Klingon ships near Bajoran space. It seems the Klingons are placing a minefield in the specific area. 😐

This is in preparation for a future war the Klingons have in mind around DS9. Worf suggests that he and Kurn go undercover in order to discover the mines’ locations and the activation codes for them.

Disguised as Klingon officers, Worf and Kurn are able to access the data. Kurn however is forced to shoot down a Klingon officer who tries to kill Worf. Worf didn’t see it coming whereas Kurn did see it.

Kurn becomes depressed that he killed a man who acted in defence of the Klingon Empire. Worf is also distressed about not realising the Klingon officer intended to kill him since a real Klingon would.

Worf comes to the conclusion that he isn’t of the Klingon or the human world, despite having his Federation rank. Kurn has nothing compared to him and Worf decides to give his brother a new life.

Meanwhile, Major Kira and the Defiant manage to detonate all the mines and flush out the cloaked Klingon vessels in the vicinity. I don’t think that’s the last we’ll hear of the Klingons here in the series.

Back with Worf, he has Dr. Bashir erase Kurn’s memory so that he can be given a new identity. Worf wishes for Kurn to live an honourable life as a Klingon and not be depressed by having nothing in his life.

Bashir asks Worf if this is what he wants. By having Kurn’s memories erased, he won’t remember anything of his old life, including his brother. Worf insists this the only way for Kurn to keep going. 🙁

In the end, Kurn is a given a new identity. He’s called Rodek and is entrusted to a family friend of Worf’s who agrees to take Kurn as his son. Kurn as Rodek meet Worf but he doesn’t recognise him.

Kurn/Rodek asks Worf, “Are you my family too?” But Worf replies, “I have no family.” It’s so sad for Worf to lose his brother like this. Hopefully Worf can re-establish contact with son Alexander soon. 🙂

‘Sons of Mogh’ is a pretty fascinating episode to feature Worf reuniting with his brother Kurn on ‘DS9’. It’s intriguing how the issue of Worf killing his brother Kurn was overturned in the episode.

‘Sons of Mogh’ (DS9) rating – 8/10
