‘ONE LITTLE SHIP’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This ‘DS9’ episode has Jadzia Dax, Chief O’Brien and Dr. Bashir shrunk down to size inside a runabout. So, it’s ‘Star Trek’s ‘Honey, I’ve Shrunk the Ship’. At least it’s better than ‘Planet of Giants’.

In the episode, the Defiant is sent on a mission to investigate a subspace anomaly. This involves Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir taking the runabout Rubicon into the anomaly and being shrunk to size. 😀

I found it funny when Kira was laughing away at the thought of Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir being shrunk to size inside a runabout. Worf and Aron Eisenberg as Rom don’t see the funny side to this. 🙂

At least this gives the ‘DS9’ team a chance to get away from Dominion war activity. It’s hoped Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir will return to normal size once this mission is over. But things don’t go to plan. 😐

Once the runabout is in the anomaly, the Defiant gets attacked by a Jem’Hadar ship. The Jem’Hadar soldiers disable and board the Defiant, placing the crew including Sisko, Kira, Worf and Nog hostage.

The Jem’Hadar are led by Scott Thompson Baker as First Kudak’Etan. He proclaims superiority over the Jem’Hadar since he was born in the Alpha Quadrant once the Gamma Quadrant got closed off. 😐

Kudak’Etan dismisses the advice of Fritz Sperberg as the more experienced Gamma Quadrant-born second-in-command Second Ixtana’Rax. There’s clearly tension between these two Jem’Hadar guys.

As the Defiant’s engines got damaged during the attack, Kudak’Etan demands that Sisko repairs the ship’s warp drive. Sisko insists on having his crew assist him in order to repair the warp drive here. 😐

Kudak’Etan grants the request, much to Ixtana’Rax’s disapproval. It seems Ixtana’Rax is right to object as Sisko, Kira, Worf and Nog intend to regain control of the ship whilst they’re in engineering.

Meanwhile, Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir in the Rubicon find themselves miniaturised as they return to the Defiant. They enter the ship through a plasma vent as they make their way into the engine room.

It was tense when they were trying to get to the engine room and avoid being vaporised once the impulse drive was put in gear. They soon discover that the Jem’Hadar have taken over the Defiant. 😐

Observing what Sisko, Kira, Worf and Nog are doing, Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir help out in order to regain control of the ship. I liked the bantering between Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir in the episode. 😀

Kira stalls for time whilst repairing the warp drive and Nog attempts to override the ship’s security codes. Nog has trouble since the ship’s security grid keeps changing as he’s unable to break through.

O’Brien suggests helping Nog out as they take the Rubicon to the bridge. Sisko meanwhile complains to Kudak’Etan that Ixtana’Ran is interfering with the work of getting the ship’s warp drive repaired. 😐

Back with the Rubicon, they manage to get through doors opening for them without being seen by the Jem’Hadar. Its touch and go before Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir reach the specific computer nodes.

O’Brien and Bashir beam into a computer node to manually bypass the command codes for Sisko’s plan to work. They reroute the circuitry and it is tense when O’Brien and Bashir’s lives are in danger.

Thankfully, O’Brien and Bashir are okay and Sisko is able to regain control of the ship. But Sisko is unable to take advantage of the situation when Ixtana’Rax finds the warp drives repairs are done. 😐

Kudak’Etan orders that the Defiant returns to a Dominion output immediately, ignoring Ixtana’Rax’s concerns about sabotage. Thankfully, the Rubicon flies into engineering to save the day in the end. 🙂

The Rubicon attacks the Jem’Hadar and the full-size crew including Sisko, Kira, Worf and Nog are able to overcome them. The Defiant is retaken and Jadzia blows a kiss to Worf whilst in the Rubicon.

Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir are restored to normal size once back on DS9. There’s a sweet scene with Worf and Jadzia at the end and it’s funny when Odo and Quark play a prank on O’Brien and Bashir. 🙂

‘One Little Ship’ is a very good ‘DS9’ episode. I enjoyed it when there was tension of the Jem’Hadar attacking and taking over the Defiant and it was fun seeing Jadzia, O’Brien and Bashir shrunk to size.

On Disc 7 of the ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Season 6’ DVD, there’s the documentary ‘Gary Hurtzel on ‘One Little Ship’ to enjoy.
