‘FACETS’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.
Here’s another Jadzia Dax episode in the ‘DS9’ series. And it’s a pretty fascinating one as it has Jadzia meeting Dax’s previous hosts – in the bodies of her closest friends! Yeah. This is really mind-boggling!
The episode has Jadzia inviting Sisko, Kira, Bashir, Odo, Quark, O’Brien and Chase Masterson as Leeta of all people for a really special meeting. Jadzia Dax has finally made plans to undergo her Zhian’tara.
It’s a chance for her to meet Dax’s previous hosts by temporarily transferring each of their memories from the symbiont into the minds of her close friends. She considers those she’s invited to be close. 🙂
Now I accept that with Sisko, Kira, Bashir, Odo, Quark and O’Brien since they’ve known Jadzia since the show began. But I’m not sure regards Leeta, considering she’s been in one episode called ‘Explorers’.
But if Odo says that Jadzia and Leeta have spent more time together since Leeta’s debut appearance in ‘DS9’, then I suppose it’s okay to stretch the imagination for a bit. It was just hard to comprehend.
Anyway, everyone agrees to take part in the Zhian’tara with Jadzia. Everyone except Quark though. He’s not sure about the idea of being possessed by a dead person. Thankfully, Jadzia persuades him.
Just to sidetrack here, the idea of Dax’s previous hosts being temporarily in the minds of Jadzia’s closest friends is a novel idea. It allows the DS9 cast to play different characters and it was fun to see.
I wish that happened in a special ‘Doctor Who’ anniversary episode. The companions being possessed by their respective Doctors! That would’ve been fine to celebrate a certain landmark year.
Anyway, a Guardian from Trill, played by Jefrey Alan Chandler comes to DS9 to assist in Jadzia’s Zhian’tara. He essentially transfers a host mind of the Dax symbiont from Jadzia into somebody else.
The first person to participate in Jadzia’s Zhian’tara is Kira who takes on the host mind of Lela, Dax’s first host. It was fun to see Jadzia interact with Kira as Lela and Nana Visitor does a great performance.
From there, we have Jadzia interacting with O’Brien as the shy, friendly Tobin Dax; Leeta as the cheerful gymnast Emony Dax; and Quark as the female Audrid Dax which he’s not happy about here. 😀
After that, it’s Bashir as Torias Dax who was an adventurous pilot that died young in a shuttle accident. Sisko takes on the host mind of Joran Dax. He has to be put in a holding cell for this one. 😐
Yeah, Joran Dax was the murderous musician host that was introduced in ‘Equilibrium’. Jadzia’s meeting with Joran is quite tense and painful. Avery Brooks does a fantastic performance as Joran. 🙂
It was shocking when Sisko as Joran almost strangled Jadzia after tricking her to lower the forcefield. Thankfully, it isn’t long-lasting and Sisko and the others are allowed to regain control of their bodies.
It doesn’t get addressed that Verad from ‘Invasive Procedures’ didn’t become one of the hosts for Jadzia to interact with. I suppose it’s because Verad didn’t last long since he stole the Dax symbiont.
We soon get to the big one as Odo takes on the host mind of Curzon Dax. It was fun to see Odo as Curzon. Odo literally breaks into Trill spots and has hair matching Curzon’s since he’s a shape-shifter.
Sisko gets to reunite with Curzon and it’s a happy occasion. Curzon even scares Quark once he shows up at his bar. Curzon uses Odo’s shape-shifting powers to enjoy drinking and play tongo at Quark’s. 🙂
Jadzia tries to ask Curzon questions about why he was so hard on her during her initial training to be a Trill host. He evades her questions at times and soon comes to a decision that he and Odo stay together.
Eventually, when Jadzia confronts Curzon, he reveals that he was in love with Jadzia during her training. Jadzia persuades Curzon to give her back his memories, saying that he’ll always be with her.
The episode also features a subplot where Aron Eisenberg as Nog takes his final exam to enter Starfleet Academy. Quark intervenes but Max Grodénchik as Rom sees to it his brother is stopped. 🙂
‘Facets’ has been an invigorating ‘DS9’ episode to feature Jadzia interacting with her previous hosts in the bodies of her closest friends. I liked how this episode provided more insight into her character. 🙂
