Cybermen and Joylove McShane with the Fourth Doctor
Once again, at the time of this review, I hope to read the first ‘Junk-Yard Demon’ comic story sometime soon. In the meantime, let me share what I think of its sequel ‘Junk-Yard Demon II’. The story was featured in the ‘Doctor Who Yearbook’ of 1996 and had the Fourth Doctor appearing in it.
It also has Cybermen in it as well as the Mondasian Cyberman from ‘Junk-Yard Demon’. The story is by Alan Barnes and was drawn by Adrian Salmon. The two did ‘The Cybermen’ TV Century 21-styled comic together. I can’t say this tale excited me and I’m very not fond of Adrian Salmon’s comic style.
In the story, the Fourth Doctor ends up on Grot where he met characters like Flotsam, Jetsam and Dutch. They meet Joylove McShane and his sidekick Yellow Stinker. Joylove is employed by Eric Klieg and the Brotherhood of Logicians from ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ to revive the Cybermen on Grot.
I don’t think Joylove McShane is related to Ace (since her surname is McShane), though the character is based on the titular TV hero ‘Lovejoy’ as played by Ian McShane. 🙂 I’m not sure whether the Cybermen being revived are ones from ‘The Tenth Planet’ or upgraded ones from ‘The Invasion’.
In the end, the Doctor defeats Joylove and his sidekick Stinker. Joylove and Stinker also have a run-in with the Mondasian Cyberman from ‘Junk-Yard Demon’ who boards their ship. The Doctor leaves in a hurry at the end too. I must check out the first ‘Junk-Yard Demon’ story to get to know the characters.
The stories featured in ‘The Clockwise War’ graphic novel have been very enjoyable to read and check out. My main objective was to check out ‘Blood Invocation’ featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan. After reading the graphic novel, I hope I will check out more comic tales in ‘Doctor Who’.
‘The Clockwise War’ story with the Twelfth Doctor and Bill was the highlight of this graphic novel of course. I wasn’t keen on ‘The Cybermen’ story and although I enjoyed the shorter comic stories from the ‘Doctor Who Yearbooks’, I wish they could’ve been longer in order to appreciate the characters.
‘Junk-Yard Demon II’ rating – 5/10
‘The Clockwise War’ (Graphic Novel) rating – 7/10
