Chapter 11
SCENE #104 – EXT – WOODS, ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE (1993/2013) (ZONE #3) – DAY, AFTERNOON/NIGHT
In zone #3, Commander Groul leads two Sontaran troopers to search the woods in the English countryside for their fugitives.
GROUL
Keep your eyes peeled, troopers. The Doc-tors and their associates could be anywhere. They could appear at any minute.
Just then, one of the Sontaran troopers is knocked out on the probic vent, hissing and collapsing to the ground. Groul and the other Sontaran trooper see him.
GROUL
(angrily) Trooper! I told you to keep your eyes peeled. Now we’re losing our chance to capture…
In that moment, the other Sontaran trooper gets knocked out on the probic vent too, hissing and collapsing to the ground. Groul turns the other way to see the other trooper knocked out.
GROUL
No! We are being ambushed. (calls) It’s no good trying to hide, Doc-tors. We will find you. We Sontarans never give up…
Instantly, Groul is knocked out on the probic vent, hissing and collapsing to the ground. With the three Sontarans knocked out, the Tenth, Fourth and Sixth Doctors, joined by Donna, Private James and Peri, come out of hiding.
DOCTOR 4
One thing you can always rely on with Sontarans…
DOCTOR 6
(finishes) …is how they often look forwards and not backwards.
DOCTOR 10
Good thing the Sontarans have probic vents on the back of their necks. (scoffs) Staring into the face of death indeed.
PRIVATE JAMES
And they claim to have no weaknesses.
PERI
(impressed) That was well-coordinated. Well done.
DONNA
Will they be out long?
DOCTOR 10
Hopefully, long enough to give us a chance to return to the checkpoint disc without any more Sontarans chasing us.
DOCTOR 4
Do you know the way back to your checkpoint disc, Doctor?
DOCTOR 10
Of course. I have my temporal tracker to guide us to it.
The Tenth Doctor takes out his temporal tracker and switches it on. It bleeps quite loudly.
DOCTOR 6
(intrigued) Ah! One of those temporal trackers. Quite handy for a Time Lord when you’re going about looking for a TARDIS.
DONNA
(anxiously) It’s bleeping quite loudly. Won’t the other Sontarans in the woods hear that?
DOCTOR 10
It’s saying we’re in close proximity to the checkpoint disc. Hopefully we can get to it before any more Sontarans show up.
PRIVATE JAMES
Then what are we waiting for? Let’s get cracking and get to it.
PERI
Yeah. I’ve had enough of this place.
DOCTOR 10
(cheerily) Follow me, everyone.
The Tenth Doctor leads the way. Everyone else follows him.
DOCTOR 4
So, how many other Doctors have you encountered during this excursion we’re on?
DOCTOR 10
As well as you two, there are two others. A blonde cricket player and a blonde woman. They’re on their own rescue missions in other zones of this interdimensional network.
DOCTOR 6
Let’s hope all of us can be safely united to uncover who’s behind this ghastly enterprise.
DOCTOR 4
How many of us are there then? Ten? Twenty?
DOCTOR 10
I’m the tenth incarnation, more or less. The blonde woman I mentioned. She’s the thirteenth.
DOCTOR 4
Fascinating. Amazing how many lives we’ve lived compared to other Time Lords.
DOCTOR 6
Hopefully a lot more if we’re lucky.
DOCTOR 10
(calls) Come on, Donna; James; Peri. Don’t dawdle.
No response. The three Doctors look back to see their companions.
DOCTOR 10
(concerned) Donna? Did you hear what I said?
DOCTOR 4
(concerned) James? James my dear chap, are you alright?
DOCTOR 6
(concerned) Peri, why have you stopped?
Still no response.
DOCTOR 4
Looks like they’ve been frozen on the spot.
The three Doctors make their way back to them.
DOCTOR 6
You know, I fear you may be right. (calls) Peri! Peri, please answer me.
The Sixth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Peri’s face. Nothing happens.
DOCTOR 10
(calls) Come on, Donna. Wakey, wakey.
The Tenth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Donna’s face. Nothing happens with her either.
DOCTOR 4
(calls) James! James, come on. We have to get out of this place to find your Lady Christina.
The Fourth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Private James’ face. Nothing happens with him either. The three Doctors are unsettled.
DOCTOR 6
I don’t understand. How is it that they’re frozen on the spot like this?
DOCTOR 10
It seems the person or entity that’s controlling this domain is making things difficult for us.
DOCTOR 4
Whoever he, she, they or it is must have a really huge grudge against us. Who could it be, I wonder? Or what?
SCENE #105 – INT – CONTROL ROOM, ENEMY BASE – N/A
Salvador laughs away, as he and the Tremas Master see the Tenth, Fourth and Sixth Doctors attending to their frozen companions on the monitor screen.
SALVADOR
(laughs) Excellent! Excellent! This is working better than I anticipated.
TREMAS MASTER
(amused) You enjoy playing with your toys, Salvador.
SALVADOR
Of course. Now, let us attend to our friends in zone four.
Salvador turns his attention to another monitor screen. He switches the monitor screen on, and he and the Tremas Master see the Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors and their friends in zone #4.
TREMAS MASTER
Ah. There’s the cricket lover, the Byron cosplayer and the rough one in leather.
SALVADOR
They’ve found the pyramid exit.
TREMAS MASTER
(muses) Yes. They’re trying to get out using their sonic screwdrivers.
SALVADOR
(laughs mischievously) Well then. Let’s help them out a bit, shall we?
TREMAS MASTER
You’re going to open the pyramid exit?
SALVADOR
Of course. For fun, you understand. After all, the Doctors and their friends deserve fresh air and sunlight, don’t they?
TREMAS MASTER
You still intend to freeze the Doctor’s companions, do you?
SALVADOR
Absolutely. Once I’ve frozen them, the Doctors won’t be able to protect them so easily under the hot Egyptian sun.
Salvador laughs again, as he presses buttons on a control terminal.
SCENE #106 – INT – PYRAMID, EGYPT (NORTH-EAST) (1963/2033) (ZONE #4) – DAY AFTERNOON
In zone #4, during the late afternoon in Egypt, the Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors use their sonic screwdrivers, which buzz loudly, as they try to unlock the exit to lead them and their friends Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose out of the pyramid.
NYSSA
Any luck on unlocking the exit, Doctors?
DOCTOR 5
(reassuringly) Patience, Nyssa. Patience, everyone. We’re working as fast as we can.
BILLY
We can’t help being anxious. I just know those robot mummies will find us before we can get out of here.
JEN
Surely you can unlock a door easily enough with your sonic screwdrivers.
DOCTOR 8
Unlocking a door is difficult, Jen. Not every door lock is the same. Besides, we don’t want to set off any booby traps.
ROSE
This place has been nothing but booby traps ever since we got here. I don’t see how it could get worse.
DOCTOR 9
(frustrated) If we could all stop nattering, the process of unlocking the exit will be quicker. Shut up and let us concentrate. We’re working as fast as we can.
JEN
Is your Doctor always this rude?
ROSE
He knows what he’s talking about.
At that moment, the pyramid’s exit door unlocks in an instant. The three Doctors and their friends back away, as the exit door slides open. The three Doctors switch off their sonic screwdrivers.
NYSSA
(pleased) You did it! Well done, Doctors!
BILLY
(relieved) Yes, well done! Sorry we doubted you.
JEN
Ditto. That was quick!
ROSE
How did you find the lock?
DOCTOR 5
(concerned) I’m not sure it was us who did it.
JEN
(baffled) What? W-W-What do you mean by that?
DOCTOR 8
Someone or something must have deliberately opened the exit for us. I know we’ve been at this wall for nearly seven minutes, but unlocking a door like this usually takes longer than that.
NYSSA
But…if it was deliberately opened for us…
Just then, the robot mummies came charging in. The three Doctors and their friends back away once they’ve seen them.
DOCTOR 9
(urgently) Time to worry about this mystery later. Right now, we need to leave.
DOCTOR 8
(urgently) Come on, Jen! Out you go first.
Jen runs out of the pyramid first.
DOCTOR 5
Nyssa; Billy. You next.
NYSSA
Come on, Billy. Take my hand.
BILLY
Right.
Billy takes Nyssa’s hand, as they run out after Jen.
DOCTOR 9
(urgently) Come on, Rose! Get a move on!
ROSE
(protests) Hey, how come it’s me who’s last to go out?
DOCTOR 9
(impatiently) We’re coming out behind you, Rose. Now, go on! Get going!
Rose heads out, following after Nyssa, Billy and Jen.
DOCTOR 5
(satisfied) Right. That’s all our friends out. (to Doctor 8) After you, Doctor.
DOCTOR 8
Oh no. After you.
DOCTOR 9
(impatiently) One of you, get out of here! The robot mummies are onto us!
The three Doctors instantly exit the pyramid, as the robot mummies chase after them.
SCENE #107 – EXT – DESERT, EGYPT (NORTH-EAST) (1963/2033) (ZONE #4) – DAY AFTERNOON
Out in the Egyptian desert, the Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors, Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose run for their lives.
JEN
(relieved) Oh, it feels good to be back out here. I’ll never complain about the sun again.
NYSSA
It’s too hot for my liking.
BILLY
Same for me. I should have brought our sunglasses and sun caps.
JEN
Lucky for me I’ve got my sunglasses and sunhat, isn’t it?
NYSSA
I’m sure it is.
ROSE
Do you know where we’re going next, Doctor…Doctors?
DOCTOR 5
I have my temporal tracker.
The Fifth Doctor takes out his temporal tracker and switches it on. It bleeps away quite loudly.
DOCTOR 5
(checks; gradually) There. The checkpoint disc is up ahead. If we make our way to it, we should be able to get back to U.N.I.T. HQ in the interdimensional network safely.
DOCTOR 8
How much time do we have left before the power in the checkpoint disc runs out?
DOCTOR 5
About two hours or so at least.
DOCTOR 9
Let’s get cracking then. We’ve wasted enough time. The chances of us being caught or distracted increase the longer we linger here.
DOCTOR 8
Indeed. Let’s hope nothing will delay us in getting out of this place.
DOCTOR 5
(interrupts; realises) You chaps! Stop a moment.
DOCTOR 9
(impatiently) What is it now? We haven’t got all day!
DOCTOR 5
Please stop for a moment and look at our young friends!
The Eighth and Ninth Doctors do as the Fifth Doctor says, as they look to see their friends Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose.
DOCTOR 8
(concerned) Jen! Jen, why have you stopped? Is something wrong?
DOCTOR 9
(concerned) Rose! Rose, are you alright?
DOCTOR 5
(concerned) Nyssa; Billy, please answer me!
Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose don’t respond. They stand perfectly still. The three Doctors make their way back to them.
DOCTOR 5
(insistently) Nyssa; Billy, wake up.
The Fifth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Nyssa and Billy’s faces. Nothing happens.
DOCTOR 8
Come on, Jen. No time to be teasing.
The Eighth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Jen’s face as well. Nothing happens with her either.
DOCTOR 9
Rose! Please let me know you’re alright.
And the Ninth Doctor clicks his fingers in front of Rose’s face. Nothing happens with her either.
DOCTOR 5
They seem frozen in time.
DOCTOR 9
Almost as if a hypnotic power has been placed over them.
DOCTOR 8
(astonished) Goodness. You don’t think… It couldn’t be, you know…
DOCTOR 5
That thought crossed my mind too.
DOCTOR 9
We can’t leave them here like this. They’re very likely to catch sunburn.
DOCTOR 5
I doubt we have much choice. We can’t move them without risking their temporal states.
Just then, stomping footsteps echo close by. The three Doctors look and see.
DOCTOR 8
And we have servitor robots to worry about.
DOCTOR 9
Our friends must be protected from the sun if we leave them here.
DOCTOR 8
Jen’s alright. She’s got her sunglasses and sunhat.
DOCTOR 5
Here. I’ll take my coat off and put it over Nyssa.
The Fifth Doctor takes off his cream-coloured coat.
DOCTOR 8
I’ll take mine off and put it over Billy.
The Eighth Doctor takes off his frock coat.
DOCTOR 9
And I’ll take my jacket off and put it over Rose.
The Ninth Doctor takes off his leather jacket.
DOCTOR 5
(realises) Wait! My temporal tracker and my sonic screwdriver. I’ll just retrieve those from my coat.
DOCTOR 8
Sensible idea. We’ll return for our friends once we find out why they’ve been frozen in time.
DOCTOR 9
Good plan.
After taking his temporal tracker and sonic screwdriver out from one of his coat pockets, the Fifth Doctor soon places his cream-coloured frock coat over Nyssa. The Eighth Doctor places his frock coat over Billy, and the Ninth Doctor places his leather jacket over Rose.
DOCTOR 8
There! Hopefully that should keep them protected.
DOCTOR 9
Is it enough though? I doubt they won’t catch sunburn with just coats and jackets over their heads.
DOCTOR 5
(realises) Hold on. Why didn’t I think of it before?
The Fifth Doctor reaches forward and searches the pockets of his cream-coloured coat covering Nyssa. He soon takes something out from one of the coat pockets.
DOCTOR 5
(pleased) Ah! Here we are! I knew this parasol was in one of my coat pockets.
Opening it, the Fifth Doctor soon places the parasol into the ground and covers Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose with it.
DOCTOR 5
(pleased) There. That should do it.
DOCTOR 9
I can do one better. Hold a mo.
The Ninth Doctor steps forward and searches the pockets of his leather jacket covering Rose. He takes out a couple of items from one of the jacket’s pockets.
DOCTOR 9
(pleased) There! Just what we need! Two wireless fans. Glad we got coats and jackets with bigger-on-the-inside pockets.
Placing the two wireless fans on the ground close to Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose, the Ninth Doctor switches them on and they start to blow cool air onto the motionless companions.
DOCTOR 5
(pleased) Splendid! Hopefully, the fans and the parasol should keep them cool before we get back.
DOCTOR 8
Well done, Doctors. Fast thinking.
DOCTOR 5
(realises) I’m afraid our mummy friends are getting closer.
The three Doctors look to see the robot mummies stomping closer.
DOCTOR 8
I hoped we would have had more time.
DOCTOR 9
(encouragingly) Come on! Let’s leg it!
DOCTOR 5
Right. Follow the temporal tracker and me. (to Nyssa; Billy) Sorry, Nyssa; Billy.
DOCTOR 8
We’ll be back soon, Jen.
DOCTOR 9
Rose, I promise we’ll be back for you all.
With the temporal tracker bleeping away, the Fifth Doctor leads the Eighth and Ninth Doctors. The robot mummies continue their pursuit, ignoring the motionless Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose.
SCENE #108 – EXT – WOODS, ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE (1993/2013) (ZONE #3) – DAY, AFTERNOON/NIGHT
Back in zone #3, the Tenth, Fourth and Sixth Doctors continue to check on Donna, Private James and Peri.
DOCTOR 10
We’ll have to leave them here.
DOCTOR 4
What? Leave our friends at a time like this?
DOCTOR 10
Especially at a time like this. Until we learn more about what’s going on, we can’t do anything for Donna, James and Peri.
DOCTOR 6
I’m afraid I have to agree. Will they be alright once we leave them here?
DOCTOR 4
That’s what I wondered. Suppose a couple of Sontarans come along and take them prisoner. I don’t think our friends would like that, frozen or not.
DOCTOR 10
Hopefully we can reverse the effects of what’s happened to our friends before the Sontarans cause more trouble.
DOCTOR 6
You don’t suppose the person responsible could be…well…you know…
DOCTOR 4
He’s a likely candidate. And one to have too many grudges against me.
DOCTOR 10
I’m not entirely sure this is the Master’s doing. It’s too obvious.
DOCTOR 6
Nothing about this situation has been obvious so far.
DOCTOR 10
True. But the more we collect our other selves, the more answers we’re likely to have.
DOCTOR 4
(interjects) Ssh. Listen. Do you two hear that?
The Tenth, Fourth and Sixth Doctors keep quiet and listen. Footsteps approach.
DOCTOR 6
(apprehensively) Sounds like we’ve got company. The Sontarans?
DOCTOR 10
Very possibly. Which means we’ll have to move. Come on, run!
The three Doctors run for it, before a group of Sontarans, led by Corporal Stukk, turn up.
STUKK
(cries; from a distance) There they are, troopers! Our fugitives! And they’ve knocked out Commander Groul and our comrades!
DOCTOR 4
(realises) It’s that Sontaran that dealt with that Rutan scout.
DOCTOR 6
(realises) Indeed, I forget his name. He survived the fight.
DOCTOR 10
Yeah. Unfortunately for us.
STUKK
(barks) Shoot them down, troopers! Open fire!
The Sontaran troopers open fire with their blaster rifles. Thankfully, they miss.
DOCTOR 10
(cries; urgently) Come on, you two! Run!
STUKK
(barks) Advance, troopers! Advance!
The three Doctors run for it, as the Sontaran troopers led by Stukk chase them. The Sontaran troopers continue to fire their blaster rifles whilst pursuing their fugitives. The fired shots miss their targets.
DOCTOR 6
(realises) They’re concerned about us but not our companions. They ran past them whilst our friends were still frozen in time.
DOCTOR 4
I wonder if that’s a good sign. Perhaps our friends won’t come to any harm after all.
DOCTOR 10
We’ll find out more answers to our questions once we get back to U.N.I.T. HQ.
DOCTOR 6
Is this the right way we’re going then?
DOCTOR 10
Of course it is. I’ve got the temporal tracker on me, remember?
The Tenth Doctor shows the temporal tracker in his right hand, which bleeps away quite loudly.
DOCTOR 4
Well, at least you know where we’re going.
DOCTOR 10
Come on! Keep running!
DOCTOR 6
One of these days, I’m going to work out on the TARDIS exercise bike again.
SCENE #109 – EXT – DESERT, EGYPT (NORTH-EAST) (1963/2033) (ZONE #4) – DAY AFTERNOON
Back in zone #4, the Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors have arrived at where their checkpoint disc is.
DOCTOR 9
Here’s your little checkpoint disc.
DOCTOR 5
Yes. I’m glad Nyssa, Billy and I placed the disc in the sand for my temporal tracker to find.
DOCTOR 8
So, you just press the button and we’re in U.N.I.T. HQ in an instant.
DOCTOR 5
Exactly! Give me a moment to find the switch for us to return to U.N.I.T. HQ.
The Fifth Doctor picks up the checkpoint disc from the sand and examines it for a bit. The robot mummies meanwhile get closer.
DOCTOR 8
Don’t wish to hurry you, Doctor, but the servitor robots are nearly here.
DOCTOR 5
Hold on, hold on. I know the switch is somewhere.
The Fifth Doctor keeps looking for the switch on the checkpoint disc. As the robot mummies get closer…
DOCTOR 9
(impatiently) Come on, Doctor, hurry it up!
DOCTOR 5
(realises) Aha! Here it is. (Pause) I press this switch and then…
The Fifth Doctor presses the switch, and he, the Eighth and the Ninth Doctors vanish…
SCENE #110 – INT – CENTRAL OPS ROOM, U.N.I.T. HQ – N/A
…to end up in the central ops room of U.N.I.T. HQ.
DOCTOR 5
(finishes; triumphantly) …And we’re in U.N.I.T. HQ. (impressed) Goodness, it worked.
BRIGADIER
(surprised) Good Lord! Doctor, you’re back!
DOCTOR 5
(pleased) Yes, Brigadier, I am. And I’ve brought two ‘me’s with me.
KATE
Thank goodness you’re safe. (confused) Where are Mr. and Mrs. Walker?
DOCTOR 8
(amazed) Well, well, well. As I live and breathe.
DOCTORS 8 + 9
(in unison) Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart!
DOCTOR 9
(thrilled) And his daughter Kate! Fantastic!
KATE
I assume you two are the Doctor as well.
DOCTOR 9
(happily) We most certainly are, Kate.
DOCTOR 8
(pleased) A pleasure to see you again, Kate. And you, Brigadier.
BRIGADIER
Good to see you too, Doctors.
KATE
(astonished) You two remember me then?
DOCTOR 9
Come on, Kate. You can’t expect us to forget you that easily.
DOCTOR 8
We may be getting older, but we never forget a face.
BRIGADIER
Doctor, to repeat my daughter’s question, where are Mr. and Mrs. Walker?
DOCTOR 5
(anxiously) Brigadier; Kate. We have another problem to deal with.
DOCTOR 9
Our friends are trapped in the Egyptian zone we were in. Frozen in time. There’s Nyssa and Billy, Rose Tyler…
DOCTOR 8
(finishes) …And Jen Ward. We must find a way to unfreeze them before we can get them back to U.N.I.T. HQ.
DOCTOR 5
There must be a way to do that. Procure an antidote to unfreeze our friends in time or something.
BRIGADIER
(interjects) Hold on. I’m finding it a challenge to take everything in.
KATE
Did you say ‘frozen in time’?
DOCTOR 9
Well done, Kate. Not literally frozen, but they are just standing still and being unresponsive.
DOCTOR 8
We had to place our coats and jackets on them to protect them from the Egyptian sun in zone four.
BRIGADIER
Yes, I wondered what became of your attire. Very unusual to see you Doctors defrocked.
DOCTOR 5
We also placed a parasol and two wireless fans to keep our friends cool whilst they’re in zone four. Hopefully, they should be alright once we’ve gone back for them.
DOCTOR 9
Brigadier; Kate, we may not have much time. Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose could be in great peril. And not just from the Egyptian sun.
DOCTOR 5
Something or someone is clearly aware that we’re onto them. Possibly the one responsible for this interdimensional network. We must work fast.
KATE
Osgood might have a solution to your problem, Doctors.
DOCTOR 8
(surprised) Really? You have a solution already?
KATE
We’ve been working on it ever since we came here.
DOCTOR 5
(impressed) Well, I’m pleased you, your father and everyone else at U.N.I.T. have been able to stay a step ahead of us.
BRIGADIER
It’s the advantage of having multiple U.N.I.T.s from various time periods working together, Doctors.
KATE
Especially with advanced technology.
DOCTOR 5
Be careful, you two. This technology isn’t what it seems.
BRIGADIER
Yes, so your female counterpart informed us before she and her friends left for zone five.
DOCTOR 9
Anything you wish to enlighten us on, Doctor?
DOCTOR 5
Perhaps later. Once we’ve met up with our female counterpart, we’ll explain everything.
DOCTOR 8
I’ll look forward to the exchange of information.
KATE
I’ll get in touch with Osgood. See if she can bring up what we’ve been working on to unfreeze individuals in the interdimensional zones.
Kate goes over and switches on the intercom.
KATE
(through intercom) Osgood, this is Kate Stewart. Osgood, do you hear me, over?
OSGOOD (V’O)
Reading you loud and clear, ma’am.
KATE
(through intercom) Bring Project: Tag to the central ops. You know what I’m talking about.
OSGOOD (V’O)
(surprised) Yes, I do. Goodness! Project: Tag! Has it come to that?
KATE
(through intercom) Yes. Hurry along and bring it to central ops. Doctor Five has returned with Doctors Eight and Nine. Their friends are frozen in time in zone four. They need our assistance.
OSGOOD (V’O)
(slightly excited) Did you say Doctor Five…has returned with Doctors Eight and Nine?
KATE
(realises; through intercom) Yes, Osgood. I did say that.
OSGOOD (V’O)
(slightly excited) Understood. I’ll bring Project: Tag to central ops right away. Osgood out.
Osgood signs off and Kate switches off the intercom.
DOCTOR 5
Brigadier; Kate. Has there been an update on our other selves in the other zones?
BRIGADIER
Not recently. We’re still keeping track of your other selves’ movements. You are, after all, the first to return to U.N.I.T. HQ with your Doctors from zone four.
DOCTOR 9
I wonder if any more Doctors will pop up to join us.
At that moment, a portal opens and the Tenth, Fourth and Sixth Doctors step through. The portal closes once they’ve arrived. A moment of astonished silence.
DOCTOR 8
You were saying?
DOCTOR 10
(relieved; to Doctor 5) You’ve got your lot. Well done, Doctor. (cheerily) Hello, other Doctors. Nice to see you.
DOCTOR 4
Good heavens! Are these fellows ‘me’ in the future?
DOCTOR 6
I’m glad to be living in the past.
DOCTOR 5
I’m the next one after you, long scarf.
DOCTOR 6
And I’m the next one after you, cricket jumper.
DOCTOR 5
Yes, of course. I recall you somehow from the Prime Factor business. As well as Lighthill.
DOCTOR 10
(realises) Hold on, hold on. Where’s your cream-coloured coat with the stick of celery? You never go without it.
DOCTOR 6
I wondered when you’d notice that.
DOCTOR 4
The other two also appear to be de-robed. Have you Doctors been burgled?
DOCTOR 8
Where did you three come from? Zone three, I take it.
DOCTOR 10
That’s right. Zone three. We were in an English village in two time zones. Not to mention, being chased through the woods by Sontarans.
DOCTOR 5
And your friend Donna. Where is she? She’s not with you.
DOCTOR 10
(realises) Ah. I wondered when someone would ask about that.
DOCTOR 9
Don’t tell us. Your friends are trapped in zone three just like our friends are in zone four.
DOCTOR 6
Spot on. My friend Peri is there.
DOCTOR 4
So is my friend James Darby.
DOCTOR 10
So is Donna Noble.
DOCTOR 4
All of them frozen in time for some peculiar reason.
DOCTOR 5
Brigadier; Kate.
BRIGADIER; KATE
(in unison) Yes, Doctor.
DOCTOR 5
I hope Osgood’s Project Tag works.
SCENE #111 – INT – CONTROL ROOM, ENEMY BASE – N/A
In Salvador’s base of operations, he and the Tremas Master see the Fifth, Tenth, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors reunited with the Brigadier and Kate at U.N.I.T. HQ on a monitor screen. Salvador angrily slams his right fist on one of the control terminals.
SALVADOR
(angrily) This isn’t fair! Not fair at all!
TREMAS MASTER
No need to panic. This was bound to happen as we discussed beforehand.
SALVADOR
(angrily) I’m not panicking, I’m angry. Does the Doctor not despair so easily?
TREMAS MASTER
We have their companions frozen in time. True, the Doctors will have U.N.I.T.’s resources to free them, but we can still lure them to where we want them to be: our base of operations. That is the primary objective.
A moment of silence.
SALVADOR
(gradually) The time has come for me to attend to the Doctor who instigated this hijack to my grand scheme in the first place.
TREMAS MASTER
I beg your pardon?
SALVADOR
Once she has been attended to, I can implement the next phase of my scheme as prearranged.
TREMAS MASTER
This is my scheme too, Dark Lord Salvador.
SALVADOR
I still control this domain! I am Lord and Saviour of everyone! You will obey.
TREMAS MASTER
If you don’t mind me saying so, you’re behaving rashly.
SALVADOR
Silence! If it wasn’t for that incarnation of the Doctor hijacking my scheme, we could have had all the Doctors in every form brought to me. Quite frankly, I’m getting fed up with your so-called words of wisdom.
TREMAS MASTER
Very well. Do what you like. Acquire the Doctor in her thirteenth form if you must.
SALVADOR
I will. Nothing will persuade me otherwise.
TREMAS MASTER
But I still advise you to choose your moment carefully. One false move, and the Doctors will be alerted to our presence within the spatial-temporal maelstrom in an instant.
SALVADOR
That piece of advice I will take into account.
TREMAS MASTER
I’m glad there’s evidence of you being sensible, my dear Salvador.
SALVADOR
Leave me now. I wish to be alone.
TREMAS MASTER
As you wish. Give me a shout if you need anything.
The Tremas Master makes to leave, as Salvador turns his attention to another monitor. Before the Tremas Master leaves, he looks at Salvador, who is absorbed in the control terminals.
TREMAS MASTER
(quietly) You won’t dismiss me so casually again, Salvador. Soon, this disciple shall become Master and I will control you.
SCENE #112 – INT – CENTRAL OPS ROOM, U.N.I.T. HQ – N/A
Back in U.N.I.T. HQ, the Fifth, Tenth, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Doctors, the Brigadier and Kate, are joined by Osgood, who’s about to demonstrate Project Tag.
OSGOOD
(breathlessly) It’s an honour to meet you, Doctors. I’ve read the reports about your times with U.N.I.T., including tackling Ice Warriors, Cybermen and Zygons as well as the incident at Lanyon Moor in the two thousands. I’ve wanted to meet people like you for a long time and to see you here in the same room, well, I just…
BRIGADIER + KATE
(in unison; interrupts) Inhaler, Osgood.
OSGOOD
(realises; calms down) Oh. Yes, of course. Sorry.
Osgood takes her inhaler, breathes in and out and calms down.
OSGOOD
(continues) So, you see, Doctors, when U.N.I.T. personnel initially explored the interdimensional zones, some unusual temporal emissions were detected. Gradually, some of U.N.I.T.’s personnel were frozen in time, depending on the amount of time they spent in each zone. Usually, it approximated to three hours.
DOCTOR 5
(realises) Hence why you recommended the three-hour mark for us and our friends to locate and rescue our other selves and their friends.
OSGOOD
Exactly. Once U.N.I.T. members had been frozen in time, the science division set measures to unfreeze the participants within the zones. Thus, we came up with Project: Tag. Essentially, we apply tag badges to anyone frozen in time in the interdimensional zones.
DOCTOR 10
(interjects) And these…tag badges. They unfreeze the people frozen in time the moment one of them is placed on an individual.
OSGOOD
Essentially, yes.
DOCTOR 4
So, just to be clear. You’ve found a way to unfreeze people from their temporal states when they’ve spent more than three hours in the interdimensional zones. You can do that?
OSGOOD
Of course. We have been working with U.N.I.T. science members from the future who have experimented in the time field.
DOCTOR 4
(dubiously) I see.
DOCTOR 10
Impressive. Can I examine one of these tag badges please?
OSGOOD
Of course. Here’s one I’ve built.
Osgood hands over the tag badge, which the Tenth Doctor takes and examines.
DOCTOR 4
It must have taken a lot of time and experimentation to prepare and test the tag badges in order to unfreeze the U.N.I.T. personnel who first ventured into the interdimensional zones.
OSGOOD
It took a lot of time and experimentation, yes, Doctor. Again, we have the technical support of U.N.I.T. members from the future to thank for that. We’ve been able to work quickly with the advanced technology at our disposal.
DOCTOR 6
(suspiciously) This does seem convenient and too good to be true.
DOCTOR 5
That’s what me and our thirteenth counterpart deduced when we examined the components that U.N.I.T. collected from the interdimensional manipulator that’s powering up this network.
DOCTOR 6
We still need to be clear on the details when we meet up.
DOCTOR 8
(gradually; to Doctor 10) Well, Doctor checking out the tag badge? What are your findings?
DOCTOR 9
Yeah, tell us the good and bad news. Is the device suitable or not?
DOCTOR 10
(muses) This should be adequate, yeah. Very impressive piece of workmanship.
The Doctor hands the tag badge back to Osgood.
OSGOOD
Thank you, Doctor. Much appreciated.
DOCTOR 10
We’ll worry about the ethical and moral implications of what you’ve created another time. Quite frankly, I’m surprised that U.N.I.T. came up with sophisticated technology like that. Especially for spatial-temporal zones outside Space and Time.
BRIGADIER
You still think someone in U.N.I.T. might be responsible for what’s going on? Like Francesca Lethbridge-Stewart, my daughter and my descendant?
DOCTOR 5
If she ever was your descendant to begin with, Brigadier.
KATE
She’s nowhere to be seen again. Should we be worried?
DOCTOR 6
Let’s keep our options open, shall we? We can’t afford to make presumptions and judgements so quickly.
The Sixth Doctor catches the Fifth Doctor staring incredulously at him.
DOCTOR 6
What?
DOCTOR 5
(feigns innocence) Nothing.
DOCTOR 6
That face.
DOCTOR 5
What face?
DOCTOR 6
I see. (Pause) Bullfighting.
DOCTOR 5
(half-listens) What?
DOCTOR 6
Bear-baiting.
DOCTOR 5
(caught out, winces) Pardon…?
DOCTOR 6
(feigns innocence, smugly) Nothing.
DOCTOR 9
How many Project: Tag devices do you have?
OSGOOD
About two dozen. We’ve been building each device one at a time. You can’t rush such an intricate device.
DOCTOR 9
You’d better keep at it then. We don’t know how many Tags we’ll need to save our other selves and our friends.
BRIGADIER
(realises) Speaking of which, hadn’t we better warn your thirteenth counterpart, your other selves and their friends in zone five?
KATE
You’re right, father. The Doctors in that zone need immediate assistance to prevent their friends from being frozen in time like your friends were.
DOCTOR 10
Good point. I can take about five Project: Tag devices to place them on the Doctors’ friends in zone five.
DOCTOR 5
I’ll accompany you, Doctor. You’ll need help in order to locate the Doctors and their friends in zone five. Especially with our temporal trackers.
OSGOOD
(realises) Wait. Won’t you Doctors be frozen in time the same way your friends in zones three and four were?
DOCTOR 9
Not necessarily. We, as Time Lords…the same Time Lord…can pass through the boundaries of Space and Time much easier when compared to humans. We’re not as susceptible as you lot are to time being frozen around you.
BRIGADIER
I’m not sure whether to be encouraged by that remark or insulted.
DOCTOR 8
Sorry, Brigadier. We can’t afford niceties. Especially when our friends’ lives are to be considered.
KATE
So, you Doctors Five and Ten are going to attend to Doctors Thirteen, Eleven and Twelve and their friends in zone five. What about your friends trapped in zones three and four?
DOCTOR 4
I’ll rescue our friends in zone three. James Darby is my responsibility.
DOCTOR 6
I’ll accompany you. Peri’s my responsibility too.
DOCTOR 10
Make sure my friend Donna is alright too.
DOCTOR 4
We will, Doctor. Don’t you worry about that.
DOCTOR 8
I suppose you and me, Doctor, should attend to Nyssa, Billy, Jen and Rose in zone four.
DOCTOR 9
Of course. Did you ever doubt it?
DOCTOR 5
Hopefully, we can bring all of our friends safely back to U.N.I.T. HQ once they’ve been unfrozen.
BRIGADIER
I hope so too. Osgood’s technical gizmos are usually very efficient, so I’m told.
DOCTOR 10
How much power is in these tag badges, Osgood?
OSGOOD
About ninety six percent, Doctor.
DOCTOR 4
So, there’s a four percent chance the tag badges won’t work as effectively as we would like them to once we’ve placed them on our friends.
OSGOOD
The tag devices have been effective in the past when we’ve used them on U.N.I.T. personnel. (Pause) But you are correct, Doctor. There could be a slim chance that the tag badges won’t actually work. Nothing’s foolproof, I’m afraid.
DOCTOR 9
(grimly) Well, that’s fantastic.
DOCTOR 6
(encouragingly) Come, Doctors. Let’s not give up hope. Let’s take a chance to rescue our friends.
DOCTOR 5
I agree. (to Doctor 10) Come on, Doctor. Let’s get ready to enter zone five.
DOCTOR 10
Of course. Allons-y and all that. Let’s hope we’re not too late.
OSGOOD
I’ll give you two the tag devices you need before you leave.
SCENE #113A – INT – CAVE, ISLAND (1863/2563) (ZONE #1) – DAY, EVENING
Meanwhile, in zone #1, the First and Second Doctors, Barbara and Susan are waiting anxiously for Zoe to do what she has in mind to save Ian and Jamie from the Daleks. Zoe is getting ready with the microphone given to her by the First and Second Doctors.
DOCTOR 2
(calls) Are you nearly finished with preparing that microphone, Zoe?
ZOE
(from a distance) Nearly ready, Doctor. Sorry, this took a little longer than I thought.
BARBARA
(anxiously) Perhaps this was a bad idea after all. I mean, Ian and Jamie have just been apprehended by the Daleks.
SUSAN
(anxiously) Oh, grandfather, let’s go over and help them please!
DOCTOR 1
No, wait, Susan, wait. There may still be a chance.
DOCTOR 2
Yes, give Zoe time, you two. Her plan may work at any moment.
Meanwhile, the Daleks have Ian and Jamie in their sights at the rock wall.
COMMAND DALEK
(from a distance) YOU TWO ARE OUR PRISONERS. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE.
DALEK #1
(from a distance) WHERE ARE YOUR ASSOCIATES?
IAN
(from a distance) We won’t tell you.
JAMIE
(from a distance) Aye, you’re going to have to kill us first before we tell you anything.
DOCTOR 2
(grimly) Bad thing to say, Jamie.
SUSAN
(anxiously) Oh no. Ian; Jamie!
DOCTOR 1
(firmly) Quiet, child, quiet!
COMMAND DALEK
(from a distance) SPEECH WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. WE SHALL EXTRACT BRAINWAVES TO ACQUIRE INFORMATION.
IAN
(from a distance) What’s that supposed to mean?
DALEK #1
(from a distance) YOU WILL KNEEL!
JAMIE
(from a distance) Och, we’re not gonna listen to what you Daleks say.
DALEK #1
(from a distance) KNEEL!!!
IAN
(from a distance) Come on, Jamie, let’s not aggravate them.
As Ian and Jamie kneel at the Daleks’ command, Zoe has her microphone ready, as she puffs on it.
ZOE
(eagerly) It’s alright, Doctor. I’m ready.
DOCTOR 2
(urgently) Hurry then, Zoe.
DOCTOR 1
(urgently) Indeed, my dear. The Daleks are about to do something terrible to Chesterton and that young lad out there.
ZOE
(realises) Oh. Right.
Zoe clears her throat and raises the microphone to her lips.
ZOE
(through microphone) Daleks! If you can hear me, please listen.
SCENE #113B – EXT – ISLAND (1863/2563) (ZONE #1) – DAY, EVENING
Outside, the Daleks stop and listen, as they hear Zoe’s voice.
DALEK #2
WHAT IS THAT VOICE? WHO IS THERE? ANSWER!
DALEK #1
WHERE IS IT COMING FROM?
JAMIE
(whispers) Ian, that’s Zoe’s voice.
IAN
(whispers) Quiet, Jamie. Let’s hear what she has to say to the Daleks.
COMMAND DALEK
(barks) IDENTIFY YOURSELF! WHERE ARE YOU? WHY CAN’T WE SEE YOU?
ZOE
(from a distance; through microphone) Private static. String generate. Random string. Open bracket, integer length, coma, string seed chars, close brackets…
As Zoe talks away, the Daleks go out of control.
DALEK #2
(panics) ALERT! ALERT! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
DALEK #1
(panics) LOSING CONTROL. CANNOT CONTROL. HELP ME, HELP ME.
COMMAND DALEK
(panics) WE MUST STOP THE VOICE! DALEK CONTROL MALFUNCTIONING! ALERT! ALERT!!!
The Daleks continue to go out of control whilst Zoe keeps on talking.
ZOE
(from a distance; continues; through microphone) …String builder s-b equals new string builder, open and close brackets, semi-colon…
IAN
(astonished) What kind of gibberish is that?
JAMIE
I don’t know. But trust me, if I know Zoe, she’ll work her way out with maths and computers. It seems to be working.
SCENE #113C – INT – CAVE, ISLAND (1863/2563) (ZONE #1) – DAY, EVENING
SUSAN
(thrilled) It’s working! Whatever Zoe is doing, it’s working!
BARBARA
What kind of language is that?
DOCTOR 2
Java, my dear.
BARBARA
Java?
DOCTOR 2
Yes, it’s a computer programming language from Zoe’s time. It was introduced in nineteen ninety-five before it became quite prominent in the twenty-first century.
DOCTOR 1
And this…Java language. It’s affecting the Daleks’ computer systems while Zoe says it.
ZOE
(off-microphone) Of course. I’m able to tap into the Daleks’ computers and issue concise verbal commands. It is remarkably efficient.
DOCTOR 1
Fascinating. (chuckles) Most fascinating.
DOCTOR 2
I concur with Susan. It seems to be distracting the Daleks well.
ZOE
(continues; through microphone) …Random rand equals new random, open and close brackets, semi colon. While, open bracket, i, less than length, close bracket…
COMMAND DALEK
(from a distance; panics) THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! CEASE THIS IMMEDIATELY!
DALEK #1
(from a distance; panics) DALEK WEAPONRY INOPERATIVE! CANNOT FIRE! CANNOT FIRE!
DALEK #2
(from a distance; panics) THE DALEKS ARE DEFENCELESS! SEND REINFORCEMENTS. REQUEST IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE!
Eventually, Zoe stops speaking into her microphone.
ZOE
There, I think that should do it.
SUSAN
(pleased) Ian and Jamie can come over now!
BARBARA
(calls) Ian; Jamie, come on over!
SCENE #113D – EXT – ISLAND (1863/2563) (ZONE #1) – DAY, EVENING
DOCTOR 2
(from a distance; calls) Yes, come on, you two! The Daleks are out of action!
DOCTOR 1
(from a distance; calls) You can come inside the cave! Come on, come on!
IAN
I believe that’s our cue, Jamie.
JAMIE
Come on then. Let’s get over there and run!
Ian and Jamie get up and make their way over to the First and Second Doctors, Barbara, Susan and Zoe, running past the out-of-control Daleks.
SCENE #113E – INT – CAVE, ISLAND (1863/2563) (ZONE #1) – DAY, EVENING
SUSAN
(pleased) They heard us! They’re making their way over!
BARBARA
Thank goodness. Let’s hope they reach the cave safely.
ZOE
No need to worry. Here they are.
DOCTOR 1
Dear, dear, I didn’t realise how fast Chesterton could be.
DOCTOR 2
I shouldn’t be surprised considering both he and Jamie escaped from the Daleks.
Eventually, Ian and Jamie arrive.
JAMIE
Aye, here we are.
ZOE
(relieved) Jamie, thank goodness you and Ian are safe.
IAN
I assume you Doctors had a part to play in rescuing us.
DOCTOR 1
Don’t thank us, Chesterton. It’s this young lady who deserves the credit.
DOCTOR 2
Yes, Zoe and her Java. Well done, Zoe.
BARBARA
Yes, well done.
SUSAN
You have a knack with computer languages, Zoe.
ZOE
Thanks. But I don’t know how long my Java trick will last. I’m not sure how effective it is as a computer language compared to Algol.
IAN
Never mind, Zoe. You gave Jamie and me the chance to get away and that’s good.
JAMIE
Aye, we got here unscathed.
BARBARA
(anxiously) Ian!
IAN
What is it, Barbara?
BARBARA
Look. The Daleks. They’ve regained control.
Everyone looks to see the Daleks outside.
COMMAND DALEK
(barks) WE HAVE DETECTED LIFEFORMS IN THE VICINITY. THE FUGITIVES ARE IN THE CAVE! THEY ARE TRAPPED.
SUSAN
(terrified) Oh no! They’ve spotted us!
ZOE
I had an inkling it was too good to be true.
At that moment, the Daleks open fire. The First and Second Doctors and their friends react startled to the shots, as rocks crumble away from the cave entrance.
COMMAND DALEK
(barks) PURSUE THE FUGITIVES! THEY MUST BE EXTERMINATED!
DALEKS
(in unison) WE OBEY!
The Daleks trundle onward towards the cave.
JAMIE
(groans) We can never get away from these beasties!
DOCTOR 1
(urgently) Come along, everyone! We must hurry! Deep into the cave!
DOCTOR 2
Yes! And avoid getting shot at by the Daleks as we venture in.
BARBARA
I’m not sure this is a good idea.
IAN
(interjects) Come on, Barbara. It’s not ideal, I know, but we must avoid the Daleks firing at us.
ZOE
Let’s hope we’ll be able to outrun them.
DOCTOR 1
Susan, dear. Help me as we go in.
SUSAN
Alright, grandfather. Lean on me.
COMMAND DALEK
(barks) STOP THEM! STOP THEM!! STOP THEM!!!
The Daleks continue firing, as the First and Second Doctors, Ian, Barbara, Susan, Jamie and Zoe go deeper into the cave. The Doctors and their friends are gone whilst the Daleks keep on firing and pursue them into the cave.
