‘HIGH FIVE’ (MMPR)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

I saw the second ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ episode on the VHS my best mate Stephen lent me when I was into ‘Power Rangers’ at 11/12 years old. This episode focuses on the character of Trini, the Yellow Ranger, who faces her fear of heights, so that she can rescue Billy, the Blue Ranger.

This isn’t one of the best ‘Power Rangers’ episodes I’ve seen and it’s considered to be a filler episode for the first season. I enjoyed the episode when I saw it, although I was disappointed by some of the fight scenes, especially once the five heroes become Power Rangers and they tackle the monsters. 😐

Trini’s fear of heights leads me to question why she was chosen to be the Yellow Ranger in the first place by Zordon. But fair dos, this allows a sense of character development on Trini’s part, and she overcomes her fear of heights. Zordon congratulates Trini, especially since he’s the Rangers’ mentor.

The monster that the Rangers fight against is called Bones, who looks like a skeleton version of Jack the Ripper. He can’t be killed easily, as he can detach his body parts and re-attach them without a scratch. He’s sent by Rita Repulsa to trap the Power Rangers in a time warp very much like Zordon is.

The Zord fight is rather disappointing, although better than the one in ‘Day of the Dumpster’. Rita sends a second monster, although why she didn’t make Bones grow to giant size is anybody’s guess. Jason and his Tyrannosaurus Zord are the only ones that fight the monster, and both defeat it easily.

A thing to note in this episode that Billy has invented the Rangers’ communicators, where they can contact each other as well as contact Zordon and Alpha at the Command Center. The communicators also work as teleportation devices, as the Rangers teleport to the Command Center.

Incidentally, a shuttle is used as the time warp device for Rita and her minions to send to Earth. I assume this is the same shuttle used by the astronauts who opened Rita’s dumpster in the first episode, and it’s been shrunk to size. We don’t know what became of those two astronauts either. 😐

‘High Five’ is quite an average ‘Power Rangers’ episode in the ‘Mighty Morphin’ series. I remember it fondly, having first watched it on a VHS lent to me by my best mate Stephen, but I wouldn’t class this as a great episode. It does showcase Trini quite well, especially as she overcomes her fear of heights.

‘High Five’ (MMPR) rating – 6/10
