‘THE MORECAMBE & WISE CHRISTMAS SHOW 1971’

Please feel free to comment on my review.

The third Christmas Special has more music in it and it features some memorable scenes of guest stars appearing with Eric and Ernie. I find the actors are more interesting than the singers as the guest stars.

The guest stars are as follows. There’s Bond singer Shirley Bassey; actress Glenda Jackson; music conductor André Previn; actor Francis Matthews; actress Ann Hamilton and the song group Los Zafiros.

Shirley Bassey, who sang the song ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ for the 1971 James Bond film of the same name, sings that song as well as ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes’ in the episode. I found her really good here.

It was amusing when Eric and Ernie re-arrange the scenery and replace Shirley Bassey’s shoes with Eric’s boots whilst she was singing one of her songs. It’s a scene that’s pretty well-remembered in this.

Andre Previn conducts with Eric on his rendition of ‘Greig’s Piano Concerto’ by ‘playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order’. That quote describes ‘Doctor Who’s ‘Creatures of Beauty’.

Glenda Jackson gets to do a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers dance with Eric and Ernie that is ‘The Hollywood Melody’. Francis Matthews also appears with Eric, Ernie and Ann Hamilton in ‘Robin Hood’.

‘The Morecambe & Wise Christmas Show 1971’ rating – 7/10
