‘SCORPION’ (VOY)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is a two-part story, where the first episode is the finale for Season 3 of ‘Voyager’, ending on a cliff-hanger, and the second episode is the season opener for Season 4, and resolves the cliff-hanger.

The Borg would become a recurring and popular race of villain for the Voyager crew. This was to be one of their major appearances in ‘Star Trek’ and introduced a new regular character from the Borg.

The Voyager crew, under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway, are about to enter Borg space when lost in the Delta Quadrant. They prepare themselves for anything to happen inside that space.

But the Borg are having problems of their own. They’re facing danger when many of their cube ships are being destroyed by a monster powerful than they are. This new alien race is called Species 8472.

Species 8472 are a group of aliens that look like they’re from ‘War of the Worlds’ with long legs and sharp claws. They come from a universe of fluidic space and they’re not very easy to kill or to defeat.

The Borg try to assimilate Species 8472, but they’re easily destroyed by them. The Voyager crew want safe passage through Borg space. Captain Janeway soon decides to make a deal with the devil.

This episode features a guest appearance of John Rhys-Davies as Leonardo da Vinci on the holodeck with Captain Janeway. For me, John played Gimil the dwarf in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy.

I liked how this episode opened with a teaser that ends with the Borg saying “Resistance is…” before getting destroyed by Species 8472. I used that for a ‘Doctor Who’ fan-fiction story called ‘Doom of the Daleks’.

I like the idea of there being an enemy far more powerful than the Borg in Species 8472. Big Finish have done this with the Daleks in ‘The Mutant Phase’ and I’ve done it in my story with the Daleks and the Dwaxi.

The ‘scorpion’ in this two-part story is a reference to a famous fable. Commander Chakotay tells Captain Janeway the fable to her when he’s doubting her decision to form an alliance with the Borg.

In ‘Part Two’, we’re introduced us to a new Voyager crewmember. The Borg and the Voyager team have to find a way to defeat Species 8472, as the Borg utilises one of their drones to speak for them.

This Borg drone is the sexy Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. Seven of Nine and the Voyager team work together to defeat Species 8472. It’s not an easy alliance and it results with plot twisting revelations.

This is the first time we meet Seven of Nine in the ‘Voyager’ series. She’s completely Borg at first, before we see her broken down into her human feminine babe self during the rest of this TV series.

Seven is a very interesting character and is very complex. I thought it was terrific idea to have a Borg crew member aboard the starship Voyager and she has proven to be a terrifically popular character.

Jeri Ryan delivers a superb performance as Seven of Nine, especially in this episode. She plays her extremely well with such precision and believability and she is also a popular one with the Trekkies.
