‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Victory of the Daleks’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Today, we’re checking out the third episode of Series 5 in the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘Victory of the Daleks’ by Mark Gatiss, starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond. This is the ‘Doctor Who’ episode where Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor meets the Daleks for the first time. It’s also an episode where the Eleventh Doctor and Amy meet up with Ian McNeice as Winston Churchill, as they travel back in time to the Cabinet War Rooms during the Second World War. This episode also features Bill Paterson as Edwin Bracewell. There are two new types of Daleks introduced in this ‘Doctor Who’ episode. There are the Ironside Daleks and there are the New Paradigm Daleks. Is this a ‘Doctor Who’ episode that impressed me greatly when I first saw it on TV back in April 2010? ‘Victory of the Daleks’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. Continue reading

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for us to check out the second episode of Series 5 in the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘The Beast Below’ by Steven Moffat, starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond. In the episode, the Eleventh Doctor and Amy visit the Starship UK in the distant future where they discover a unsettling secret involving a giant star whale. Can the Doctor and Amy survive the Smilers and Winders aboard the Starship UK? This ‘Doctor Who’ episode also features Sophie Okonedo (who I’ve seen in the 2006 film ‘Stormbreaker’) as ‘the bloody queen’ called Liz 10 ( 😀 ) and the late Terrence Hardiman (well-known for playing the Demon Headmaster and he’s been in the Big Finish audio adaptation of ‘The English Way of Death’) as Hawthorne. ‘The Beast Below’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘The Eleventh Hour’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

And welcome to the Steven Moffat reign of ‘Doctor Who’ where we begin the Matt Smith/Eleventh Doctor era. Both the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras of ‘Doctor Who’ are a mixed bag for me, but more will be unveiled as we go through each era. Today, we’re starting off with the first episode of Series 5 of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, which is Matt Smith’s first season as the Eleventh Doctor. It’s time for ‘The Eleventh Hour’ by Steven Moffat, where Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor crash-lands to Earth and he meets Caitlin Blackwood as Amelia Pond, who soon grows up to become Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, the Doctor’s new companion. This episode also introduces us to Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams, Amy’s boyfriend. Can the Eleventh Doctor work out the mystery of Prisoner Zero whilst recovering from his regeneration and identifying who he is, and will he win Amy Pond over before she becomes his new companion? ‘The Eleventh Hour’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Silence in the Library’/’Forest of the Dead’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for us to check out the two-part ‘Doctor Who’ adventure ‘Silence in the Library’/’Forest of the Dead’ by Steven Moffat. In this two-part story, David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna visit a planet-sized library called the Library. 😀 There, they meet Alex Kingston as River Song, who makes her first ‘Doctor Who’ appearance in the new TV series. River happens to know the Doctor whereas the Doctor doesn’t know her yet. She’s part of a team of archaeologists, including Steve Pemberton as Strackman Lux, Talulah Riley as Miss Evangelista, Jessika Williams as Anita, O. T. Fagbenle as Other Dave and Harry Peacock as Proper Dave. The Doctor, Donna, River and the others have to survive, since the shadows in the Library contain the vicious alien Vashta Nerada. ‘Silence in the Library’/’Forest of the Dead’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Time Crash’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Today, let’s check out another one of my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ stories from the new TV series, and it happens to be a mini-episode by Steven Moffat. This is ‘Time Crash’, an eight-minute Children In Need episode that was shown on the 16th of November 2007. It stars David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. It was lovely to see this mini-episode back in 2007, as it features two of my favourite Doctors in ‘Doctor Who’. Also, with Peter Davison being a classic series Doctor meeting up with David Tennant as a new series Doctor, this mini-episode feels extra-special. ‘Time Crash’ can be checked out on DVD and Blu-ray as well as here via the following BBC YouTube video. 🙂 Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Blink’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Here we are on what I consider to be the best ‘Doctor Who’ episode ever written by Steven Moffat in the original Russell T. Davies era. It’s time for ‘Blink’, an episode that introduces the Weeping Angels in ‘Doctor Who’. The episode stars Carey Mulligan as Sally Sparrow, who uncovers a mystery at an old house. She discovers David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor via Easter Eggs on a DVD. He happens to be trapped in the year 1969 with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. Can Sally help the Doctor and Martha out of the time trap they’re in whilst having to contend with the Weeping Angels in the year 2007? ‘Blink’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for another Steven Moffat-penned ‘Doctor Who’ episode in the new TV series called ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’. In this episode from Series 2, we have David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose joined by Noel Clarke as Mickey as a travelling companion in the TARDIS. They visit a spaceship in the 51st century, where the Doctor discovers time windows leading into 18th century Paris. They revolve around the life of Madame de Pompadour, played by Sophia Myles (who played Lady Penelope in the 2004 ‘Thunderbirds’ movie 😀 ). The Doctor must save Madame de Pompadour from the menace of the Clockwork Droids who have come to collect her. Will this episode end happily for both the Tenth Doctor and Madame de Pompadour? ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘The Empty Child’/’The Doctor Dances’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Here’s the second two-part adventure in Series 1 of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It’s also the first two-parter penned by Steven Moffat, and it’s one of my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ stories from the Christopher Eccleston/Ninth Doctor era. Starring Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, the TARDIS duo travel back in time to the year 1941 on Earth where London is at the height of the Blitz. They meet John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, who eventually joins them as a TARDIS traveller. The trio have to thwart the menace of the gas mask zombies who keep asking “Are you my Mummy?” Can they solve the mystery of what’s going on with these zombies? ‘The Empty Child’/’The Doctor Dances’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘The Night of the Doctor’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I know we’re jumping ahead with this one in terms of the TV series’ history for the 60th Anniversary Marathon, but we might as well talk about it here. It’s time to check out ‘The Night of the Doctor’ by Steven Moffat, a special six-minute mini-episode celebrating the 50th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’. Transmitted in 2013, ‘The Night of the Doctor’ stars Paul McGann, who returns to play the Eighth Doctor. This mini-episode also features the regeneration between him and John Hurt as the War Doctor. There’s also Emma Campbell-Jones as Cass, who has reprised the role in a box set of Big Finish audios recently, and there’s Clare Higgins as Ohila of the Sisterhood of Karn. ‘The Night of the Doctor’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray, BBC iPlayer and here via the official ‘Doctor Who’ YouTube channel. 😀 Continue reading

Blu-ray Reviews – ‘Sherlock’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Before we begin, I just want to give you a heads-up as to what you’re about to expect concerning these reviews I’m sharing today. These reviews are based on my personal experiences of a crime TV series I’ve watched on Blu-ray lately. They do not reflect other people’s opinions about ‘Sherlock’. 😐 Continue reading
