For the past few Sundays, I’ve watched the three ‘Enola Holmes’ movies available on Netflix. I’ve greatly enjoyed seeing these films. I saw the first two films in 2022, but I didn’t get the chance to share my thoughts on them. 😐 Now I can share my thoughts on all three!

The first ‘Enola Holmes’ film was released in 2020. It stars Millie Bobbie Brown as the title character, who happens to be the sister of Sherlock Holmes, played by Henry Cavill (Superman from the ‘DC Extended Universe’). I’ve greatly enjoyed Millie Bobbie Brown in all three movies.

A thing I’ve noticed about all three ‘Enola Holmes’ films is that it has Millie as Enola Holmes breaking the fourth wall to us when progressing the plot forward. So, I suppose Enola Holmes is like the 19th century version of Deadpool, but with less foul language. 😀

In the first ‘Enola Holmes’ film, Enola journeys to London to find her missing mother, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes. She soon teams up with Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury, a runaway lord and they attempt to solve a mystery that threatens the UK. 🙂

The film’s cast also includes Sam Claflin as Mycroft Holmes, the eldest of the Holmes siblings, who’s meaner than the Mycroft played by Mark Gatiss in the ‘Sherlock’ TV series. There’s also Burn Gorman (from ‘Torchwood’) who plays the assassin Linthorn. 😐

There’s Adeel Akhtar as Lestrade, Susie Wokoma as Edith, Hattie Morahan (Helen Sinclair in the Big Finish audios of ‘Doctor Who’) as Lady Tewkesbury, Tewkesbury’s mother, David Bamber as Sir Whimbrel Tewkesbury, Tewkesbury’s uncle, and Frances de la Tour as the Dowager, Tewkesbury’s grandmother.

The cast also includes Claire Rushbrook (who has appeared in ‘Doctor Who’) as Mrs. Lane, the Holmes’ family housekeeper, Fiona Shaw as Miss Harrison, the stern headmistress of a finishing school, and Ellie Haddington as Miss Gregory, a seamstress.

The second film, ‘Enola Holmes 2’, released in 2022, is equally enjoyable as the first film. Apparently, the second film doesn’t adapt one of Nancy Springer’s ‘The Enola Holmes Mysteries’ novels. Instead, it takes real-life inspiration from the matchgirls’ strike that occurred in July 1888.

In the film, Enola takes on her first case as a detective where she must solve the mystery of a missing girl from a match factory. To solve the mystery, Enola acquires help from her friends, including her love interest Tewkesbury, and from her brother Sherlock Holmes. 🙂

As well as Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge, Helena Bonham Carter, Susie Wokoma and Adeel Akhtar reprising their roles from the first film, there’s David Thewlis playing Grail, a corrupt police superintendent who keeps hunting Enola in the film.

There’s Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Mira Troy, the secretary to Lord Charles McIntyre, played by Tim McMullan. It was quite a shock when it’s revealed that Mira Troy happens to be Professor Moriarty. A fascinating and refreshing twist for Moriarty to be black and a woman. 🙂

Himesh Patel appears as Dr. Watson during the film’s mid-credits scene. There’s also Hannah Dodd as Sarah Champan, the missing matchstick factory worker, Abbie Hern as Mae, a co-worker at the factory, and David Westhead as Henry Lyon, the factory’s proprietor.

There’s Róisín Monaghan as Hilda Lyon, the wife of Henry, Gabriel Tierney as William Lyon, Sarah’s boyfriend, Catriona Chandler as Agatha Gowerdale, Serrana Su-Ling Bliss as Bessie Chapman, Tony Lucken as Sergeant Beeston and Lee Boardman as Mr. Crouch.

The third film ‘Enola Holmes 3’, released this year, is the most romantic out of the three ‘Enola Holmes’ films so far. I like how Enola and Tewkesbury have developed their romance over the course of the three movies and it’s lovely to see how that culminates in them getting married in this film.

In the film, Enola is about to be married to Tewkesbury in Malta of all places. Unfortunately, Sherlock goes missing and Enola seeks to solve the mystery of his disappearance. 😐 Unfortunately, it leads to another confrontation with Professor Moriarty.

As well as Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge, Himesh Patel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Hattie Morahan and Susan Wokoma returning to reprise their roles from previous films, there’s Joe Azzopardi as Mikiel in this movie.

There’s also Nicholas Aaron as Sergeant Nicholas Smith, Michele Farrugia as Crista, David Sterne as coachman Eric, and Jason Watkins (who I’ve seen in the first three ‘Nativity’ films and in ‘Doctor Who’) as Brigadier Sampson, who is Tewkesbury’s godfather.

There’s Paul Cawley as the unnamed British Governor of Malta, Myron Ellul as Sergeant Indri, Robbie O’Neil as Corporal Malick, Stephen Chance (who’s done three Big Finish audios of ‘Doctor Who’) as a senior officer and Nicolette Yardley-Moore as Baroness Guilford. 🙂 I find the cast’s performances exceptionally good.

I enjoyed how the film built up to the dramatic showdown between Enola Holmes and Professor Moriarty before Enola had Sherlock Holmes and Lady Tewkesbury set free. I also enjoyed the wedding between Enola and Tewkesbury, and their love for each other is pretty evident.

It’s been great to revisit the first two ‘Enola Holmes’ films on Netflix as well as see the third film for the first time. They’ve all been captivating with their detective storytelling and Millie Bobby Brown steals the show in every performance she gives in every movie. 🙂

I don’t know what the future holds regarding the ‘Enola Holmes’ film series. Whether it’ll stop in being a trilogy or whether there’ll be a fourth film to look forward to on Netflix, I don’t know. Whatever happens, I hope I’ll get a chance to revisit the ‘Enola Holmes’ films again in the future.
