Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time to check out the seventh and final story in the Season 20 Blu-ray box set of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. Today, it’s time for the 20th anniversary special ‘The Five Doctors’ by Terrance Dicks, directed by Peter Moffat. This ‘Doctor Who’ story was shown in November 1983 and it features the first five Doctors (technically). There’s Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor and Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, with Tom Baker (through ‘Shada’ footage) as the Fourth Doctor and William Hartnell (through ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ clip) as the First Doctor. There’s Janet Fielding as Tegan, Mark Strickson as Turlough, Carole Ann Ford as Susan, Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. Lalla Ward also appears (via ‘Shada’ footage) as Romana in the story. A Dalek is also in this story as well as the Cybermen, a Yeti, a Raston Warrior Robot and Anthony Ainley as the Master. Just in case you missed it today, I’ve updated my review on the Target novelization/audiobook of the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Time Monster’ by Terrance Dicks, based on the original TV scripts by Robert Sloman and producer Barry Letts. The story features the Third Doctor, Jo, the Brigadier, Captain Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton and U.N.I.T. as they come up against the Master and the god-like Kronos. And thus, we’ve come to the fifth and final story of Season 9 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series with Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor. Let’s finish our look into the season by checking out the six-part story ‘The Time Monster’ by Robert Sloman and producer Barry Letts. As well as Jon Pertwee, the story stars Katy Manning as Jo Grant, Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier, Roger Delgado as the Master, Richard Franklin as Captain Mike Yates and John Levene as Sergeant Benton. The story also features guest stars like Wanda Moore as Dr. Ruth Ingram, Ian Collier as Stuart Hyde, George Cormack as King Dalios, Ingrid Pitt as Queen Galleia, Donald Eccles as Krasis, Aidan Murphy as Hippias, Susan Penhaligon as Lakis and David ‘Darth Vader’ Prowse as the Minotaur. Just in case you missed it today, I’ve updated my review on the Target novelization/audiobook of the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Romans’ by Donald Cotton. This story features the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki, as they visit Italy in 64 A.D. where Emperor Nero reigns in Rome. The 2023 audiobook for ‘Doctor Who – The Romans’ is read by seven narrators – Tim Treloar, Jamie Glover, Dan Starkey, Clare Corbett, Jon Culshaw, Maureen O’Brien and Louise Jameson. It’s time for one of my favourite stories out of Season 2 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series as well as my favourite story from the William Hartnell/First Doctor era. Today, we’re taking a look at ‘The Romans’, a four-part historical adventure where our heroes – William Hartnell as the First Doctor, William Russell as Ian, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara and Maureen O’Brien as Vicki – get to visit Italy in 64 A.D. They start in a Roman villa in Assisium before ending up in Rome where the fifth Emperor – Derek Francis as Caesar Nero – reigns. This is a ‘Doctor Who’ historical adventure that is injected with a lot of comedy by the story’s writer Dennis Spooner, who’s also the script editor on Season 2. Continue reading →

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

The time has come for ‘The Day of the Doctor’ by Steven Moffat – the 50th anniversary special of ‘Doctor Who’. This was shown on BBC TV on the 23rd of November 2013. It stars Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, Billie Piper as the Moment and John Hurt as the War Doctor. There are special guest stars like Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, Ingrid Oliver as Osgood and Joanna Page as Queen Elizabeth I. The story also features the Daleks as well as the return of the Zygons, who previously appeared in their first TV story ‘Terror of the Zygons’. There are surprise guest cameos of Doctors and companions that a keen ‘Doctor Who’ fan would need to look out for. 😀 This is a ‘Doctor Who’ anniversary special that’s highly rated by the fans. Do I agree with that? Do I think that this is a better anniversary special than ‘The Five Doctors’, the 20th anniversary special? Does it cover everything that I want to celebrate about 50 years of my favourite TV show? It’s time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’, as we take a look at the 20th anniversary special called ‘The Five Doctors’ by Terrance Dicks. ‘The Five Doctors’ stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, William Hartnell and Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, and Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. There’s also Janet Fielding as Tegan, Mark Strickson as Turlough, Carole Ann Ford as Susan, Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, Lalla Ward as Romana and more. I highly recommend watching the 101-minute Special Edition version of ‘The Five Doctors’, as that has more scenes and CGI effects in it. You can check out the Special Edition version on Disc 2 of the 25th Anniversary 2-disc DVD edition of ‘The Five Doctors’. Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

We’ve come to the end of ‘The E-Space Trilogy’, but not the end of Season 18 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It’s time for ‘Warriors’ Gate’, a four-part adventure by Stephen Gallagher, starring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Lalla Ward as Romana, K-9, voiced by John Leeson, and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric. This is quite an unusual and mind-boggling story to check out in Season 18. Does it end ‘The E-Space Trilogy’ on a satisfying conclusion? This story also features the departure of Lalla Ward as Romana and K-9 Mark II. ‘Warriors’ Gate’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox.
