‘NEMESIS’
Please feel free to comment on my review.
Here we are on the two-part finale of Season 3 of ‘Beast Wars’ and the series finale overall. I had no idea at the time of watching this two-part story on VHS that this was the final story in the ‘Beast Wars’ TV series. I was saddened this TV series was coming to an end.
In ‘Part 1’ of the story, Optimus Primal and the Maximals search for Megatron and the Predacons in the attempt to end the Beast Wars once and for all. Whilst hiding from the Maximals, Megatron sends Inferno, Waspinator and Quickstrike to search for a new base.
In doing so, Inferno and Quickstrike attempt to take the dwellings of the proto-humans so they can use it as the Predacons’ new base of operations. Waspinator wants no part in it, however. He stops being a Predacon, since he’s fed-up with being blown up all the time. 😀
Meanwhile, Megatron, Rampage and Dinobot II discover a link between the deceased Tarantulas’ secret lair and the Decepticon warship called the Nemesis, hidden underwater. The Nemesis was responsible for shooting down the Autobot Ark to Earth. 😐
That was in the first ‘Transformers’ TV story – the three-parter ‘More Than Meets the Eye’. Upon checking out both this ‘Beast Wars’ story and ‘More Than Meets the Eye’, there are continuity errors in ‘Nemesis’, e.g. the absence of the Nemesis’ boarding chute to the Ark.
Realising what Megatron is up to, Optimus sends Depth Charge to race after him and stop him from using the Nemesis ship to his own advantage. Unfortunately, when Depth Charge gets down there, he ends up fighting Rampage and they both end up destroyed. 😐
At the same time, Dinobot II goes through a seizure and he regains his full personality, including the memories of his other self who died in ‘Code of Hero’. Not sure how that worked. 😐 I assumed Megatron created Dinobot II based on his clone in ‘Double Dinobot’.
Initially believing that Depth Charge succeeded in stopping Megatron, Optimus and Tigerhawk are dismayed when the Nemesis rises up from the sea with Megatron and Dinobot II on board. I thought the Nemesis was purple in the ‘More Than Meets the Eye’ story.
In ‘Part 2’ of the story, with Megatron in command of the Nemesis ship, he wreaks mindless violence over the planet Earth, slowing heading for where the Autobot Ark is buried. He intends to destroy the Ark completely and the Maximals attempt to move the ship.
Optimus and Tigerhawk attempt to stop Megatron and the Nemesis ship, but to no avail. Tigerhawk tells Optimus to return to the Maximals back at the Ark whilst he sorts out the Nemesis himself. Unfortunately, Tigerhawk gets blown up in the process by the Nemesis.
I found this to be a disappointing moment in the story. After all that waiting for Tigatron and Airazor to return and to end up Tigerhawk in ‘Other Victories’, Tigerhawk doesn’t last beyond two stories. He’s brought back only to be destroyed in the series finale. Not good.
Understandably, Optimus is upset when he hears Tigerhawk got terminated. Meanwhile, Inferno and Quickstrike manage to acquire the proto-humans’ dwellings before the Nemesis shows up. Inferno and Quickstrike soon end up being destroyed by the Nemesis.
That’s very unfair, Megatron. Mind you, he is insane by this point. Back with the Maximals, their attempts to move the Ark don’t work. As soon as the Nemesis arrives, Megatron uses the tractor beam to destroy the Ark forever. Optimus gets into the Nemesis to stop him. 😐
There’s a pretty epic fight between Optimus and Megatron, but Megatron seems to have the upper hand. All seems hopeless, until Dinobot II ends up assisting the Maximals by providing them with information on an Autobot shuttle that is contained inside the Ark.
Dinobot II’s betrayal is unveiled but he also gets destroyed when Rhinox uses the Autobot shuttle to crash into the Nemesis and takes Megatron as well. The story ends with the Maximals winning the Beast Wars. They take Megatron as their prisoner and return home to Cybertron.
Waspinator also ends up being the proto-humans’ new deity on Earth, I guess. 😀 ‘Nemesis’ is a very good and satisfying conclusion to ‘Beast Wars’. It has its ups and down, but this was worthwhile to see and I’m very happy the Maximals won the Beast Wars. 🙂
On Disc 4 of Seasons 2 & 3 of the ‘Beast Wars’ 15th anniversary DVD box set, there’s the ‘Remembering the Spark’ documentary, an original making-of featurette, an art gallery and original character models to enjoy.
‘Nemesis’ rating – 8/10
