‘INDISCRETION’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

This episode happens to be the first one directed by LeVar Burton in the ‘DS9’ series. LeVar Burton is well-known for playing Geordi La Forge in the ‘TNG’ series. Amazing he’s directing a ‘DS9’ episode. 🙂

In the episode, Major Kira receives a communication from a Bajoran smuggler – Roy Brocksmith as Razka Karn. Razka has recovered a piece of metal that might be from the Ravinok, a Cardassian ship.

Kira used to know a friend on the Ravinok called Trelos Vren who enlisted her in the Shakaar resistance group. She wishes to go and investigate whether there are any survivors of the Ravinok. 🙂

Unfortunately there’s an obstacle. The Cardassian government wishes to send a representative to accompany Kira on her mission. Reluctant to have a Cardassian join her, Kira eventually agrees here.

But it turns out the Cardassian joining her happens to be…Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat. I could tell from the look of Major Kira’s face that she was like…Oh no! Not him! I don’t blame her regards that.

This was an interesting situation where Kira and Dukat travel together on a mission. Kira clearly doesn’t like Dukat due to his involvement in the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. Understandably so!

Dukat explains that he’s on the mission because he was in command of the Ravinok. He tries his best to be charming towards Kira whilst she finds him annoying. Kira however gets to know Dukat in this.

They eventually travel to a desert planet which is near where the metal fragment was found by Razka Karn. It’s there that they find the wreckage of the Ravinok as well as the graves of the dead. 😦

There happen to be twelve graves but there were several more than that on the ship. So Kira and Dukat assume that survivors are still alive. Dukat meanwhile opens the graves to identify the bodies.

He’s soon overcome with grief when he finds the remains of a Bajoran woman who happened to be his mistress. Kira hears from Dukat that he loved her and she learns the two of them had a daughter.

As they set on foot to search the planet for survivors and set up camp at night, Kira and Dukat get to know each other more. There is one funny scene featured in the story that got me laughing about. 😀

It’s when Dukat sat on something and it happens to be a sharp thorn, I think. Kira helps by giving him a dermal regenerator before she eventually breaks into laughter at the sight of him to which he joins in.

Once Kira shares with Dukat that she knows he had a daughter named Tora Ziyal, she hears that if he finds her alive, he plans to kill her. This is to avoid a scandal that will endanger his family and career.

The next day, Kira tries to persuade Dukat not to kill her daughter but he’s adamant on the decision. Kira warns Dukat that she won’t allow him to kill Ziyal, even threatening to kill him at one point here.

Kira and Dukat soon discover a mining operation taking place. It has Bajoran and Cardassian prisoners, supervised by the Breen. The Breen were first mentioned in that ‘TNG’ episode ‘The Loss’.

This is the first time the Breen made a physical appearance, I believe. They would become more prominent later on in the series, especially concerning the Dominion but that’s for another occasion.

As Kira and Dukat break into the mine; overcome the guards and free the prisoners, disguised as Breen of course, Dukat goes to search for his daughter. Kira learns her friend had died two years ago.

Dukat soon finds her daughter Cyia Batten as Ziyal and she instantly recognises him. She’s thrilled to see her father but he’s aiming a phaser rifle at her. Kira tries to stop him but Ziyal would rather die. 😦

Thankfully, it ends happily as Dukat can’t bring himself to kill her and he decided to take Ziyal home. This earns Dukat a new form of respect from Kira, even if she does not entirely like him by this point.

There is a side plot with Sisko and Penny Johnson as Kasidy Yates where she’s offered a job to work on Bajor and considers moving to the station. Sisko however gets anxious about their relationship. 😐

Thankfully the dispute between Sisko and Kasidy gets resolved, sort-of. Overall, ‘Indiscretion’ is a good ‘DS9’ episode to feature Kira and Dukat and has a good introduction to Dukat’s daughter Ziyal.

‘Indiscretion’ (DS9) rating – 8/10
