CD Reviews – ‘A Life Never Lived’ & ‘The Time of the Tipping Point’ (Timeslip)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!

Yes, as it’s Early May Bank Holiday Monday in the first week of May today, it’s time for me to share something special with you. After handling ‘The Nyssa Challenge’ of ‘Doctor Who’ reviews for my Easter review season this year, I went into revisiting the ‘Timeslip’ TV series and the first two Big Finish audio stories, which I reviewed and shared on Christmas Day in December 2020.

This is so I could check out the latest couple of Big Finish audios of ‘Timeslip’ that were released in 2023, starring Spencer Banks as Simon Randall, Cheryl Burfield as Liz Skinner and Sarah Sutton (well-known for playing Nyssa in ‘Doctor Who’) as Charlotte Trent. There’s also Orlando Gibbs as Neil Riley and Amanda Shodeko as Jade Okafor. It’s been great to check out the latest ‘Timeslip’ audio stories.

The two 2023 ‘Timeslip’ audio stories include ‘A Life Never Lived’ by Roland Moore, featuring special guest star Hugh Ross, and ‘The Time of the Tipping Point’ by Helen Goldwyn, featuring special guest star Keith Drinkel. Both stories are directed by Helen Goldwyn. The two latest ‘Timeslip’ audio stories are four-parters instead of six-parters. Did they impress me when I heard them?

Please feel free to check out, read and comment on my reviews on the latest Big Finish audios of ‘Timeslip’ by clicking on the links above. You can purchase ‘A Life Never Was’ and ‘The Time of the Tipping Point’ as CDs or downloads from Amazon.co.uk and/or the Big Finish website.

Enjoy! 🙂

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

Timeslip is one of a few British sci-fi TV classics that I could learn about for the first time thanks to updates (chiefly on YouTube’s Big Finish promos channel) of what was being revived for the audio universe. For all that Dr. Who had given fans with time travel adventures and dramas, Timeslip must have been very strong in standing on its own legs as Quantum Leap was at the time the classic Dr. Who was finally cancelled. It’s nice that Sarah Sutton could contribute to Timeslip via Big Finish. Just as Colin Baker, Louise Jameson and Lisa Bowerman contributed to Sapphire & Steel via Big Finish. Because it naturally gives a special sense of connection between all these British sci-fi legacies which Big Finish can certainly enhance. Thank you, Tim.

      Hi scifimike,

I’m very pleased I’ve been able to enjoy ‘Timeslip’ through its short-lived TV series on DVD and in the Big Finish audios, especially with featuring Sarah Sutton in them. Checking out ‘Timeslip’ on DVD and on audio in 2020 was a delight for me, especially when we were living in a time of crisis. It’s been great to revisit the ‘Timeslip’ TV series and the first two Big Finish audios, especially with checking out the two latest stories from 2023. I’d like to think that ‘Timeslip’ will continue and it won’t be the end of the series by Big Finish. A ‘Charlotte Trent Strikes Again’ series, starring Sarah Sutton would be most welcome for me.

      Many thanks for your comments.

You’re very welcome. It’s always interesting, certainly after many decades of Dr. Who and Star Trek, how the short-lived sci-fi classics can particularly stick with us.

        Hi scifimike,

Indeed. I would never have heard of ‘Star Cops’ and ‘Timeslip’ if Sarah Sutton didn’t appear in the audio versions of them. I certainly wouldn’t have checked out ‘Dark Season’ by Russell T. Davies if Big Finish didn’t do an audiobook reading of the BBC novelization by Victoria Lambert.

        Many thanks,

        Tim 🙂

I remember seeing a little of the Star Cops TV series sometime after classic Dr. Who was cancelled. I knew it was created by Chris Boucher who I admired for his Dr. Who contributions including the debut story for Leela. It seemed like an interesting series and so I’m glad that it’s included in Big Finish’s wisdom for what deserves a second chance.

        Hi scifimike,

There’s a lot of ‘Star Cops’ audios by Big Finish for me to catch up on. I’m hoping to revisit the ‘Star Cops’ TV series and the ‘Mother Earth’ and ‘Mars’ audio box sets soon before checking out ‘The High Ground’ audio box sets and the rest of the Big Finish audios I’ve yet to listen to.

        Many thanks,

        Tim 🙂

Big Finish can certainly help to influence which chapter of a sci-fi franchise, certainly one as immense as Doctor Who, that fans can decide where to start with. So for the originally short-lived sci-fi classics, like Space: 1999, Star Cops and Omega Factor, maybe it wouldn’t be too overwhelming even if BF provides far more than TV could. That might enhance the dichotomy between the sci-fi classics that progress for so far like Who and Star Trek and those more limited in scope. Either way, fans who just want more from their favorite sci-fi shows would be most naturally fine with what forms they take. The blessings of even more freedom to visually imagine thanks to books and audios indeed help a great deal.
