Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time to check out the seventh and final story in the Season 20 Blu-ray box set of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. Today, it’s time for the 20th anniversary special ‘The Five Doctors’ by Terrance Dicks, directed by Peter Moffat. This ‘Doctor Who’ story was shown in November 1983 and it features the first five Doctors (technically). There’s Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor and Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, with Tom Baker (through ‘Shada’ footage) as the Fourth Doctor and William Hartnell (through ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ clip) as the First Doctor. There’s Janet Fielding as Tegan, Mark Strickson as Turlough, Carole Ann Ford as Susan, Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. Lalla Ward also appears (via ‘Shada’ footage) as Romana in the story. A Dalek is also in this story as well as the Cybermen, a Yeti, a Raston Warrior Robot and Anthony Ainley as the Master. Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

We’re now on the sixth story of Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series and, as it turns out, the season finale. Technically, anyway. Don’t worry. There’s still ‘The Five Doctors’ for us to check out next week. In the meantime, let’s check out this two-part story by Terence Dudley, featuring the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough. It’s Terence Dudley’s third ‘Doctor Who’ contribution as a writer and it’s the first and only one to be directed by Tony Virgo. The story also introduces Kamelion, a new robot companion for the Fifth Doctor, voiced by Gerald Flood, who also plays King John in this adventure. There’s also the return of Anthony Ainley as the Master in ‘The King’s Demons’. The story’s special guest stars include Frank Windsor, Isla Blair, Christopher Villiers and Michael J. Jackson. The story was filmed at Bodiam Castle, as it takes place in medieval England in the year 1215. Continue reading →

In case you missed it yesterday, I’ve added a brand-new review on the ‘Doctor Who’ Target novelization/audiobook ‘Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time’ by Terrance Dicks, based on the original TV scripts by ‘David Agnew’ (who is actually script editor Anthony Read with the scripts edited by producer Graham Williams). The story features the Fourth Doctor, Leela and K-9, and takes place on Gallifrey where our heroes confront the Vardans and the Sontarans. The 2016 audiobook for ‘Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time’ is read by John Leeson, who voices K-9 in the TV series and the Big Finish audios. Continue reading →

And here we are on the sixth and final story of Season 15 in the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. It’s time for an updated review on the six-part season finale ‘The Invasion of Time’ by David Agnew. The review was done by me and Timelord007 back in 2017. Today, we’re sharing our updated thoughts on the story, which sees Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor returning to Gallifrey, along with Louise Jameson as Leela and K-9, voiced by John Leeson. The guest cast includes John Arnatt as Chancellor Borusa, Milton Johns as Castellan Kelner, Chris Tranchell as Andred and Hilray Ryan as Rodan. The story also features the mysterious Vardans, and the war-like Sontarans, led by Derek Deadman as Commander Stor. This story also features the departure of Leela and K-9 Mark I. Continue reading →

Let’s check out the fifth and penultimate story in Season 15 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘Underworld’ by Bob Baker and Dave Martin. In this adventure, Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Louise Jameson as Leela and K-9, voiced by John Leeson, come across a spaceship in deep space called the R1C, captained by James Maxwell as Jackson, who is joined by his followers Alan Lake as Herrick, Jonathan Newth as Orfe and Imogen Bickford-Smtih as Tala. Jackson and his team are on a quest to search for the race banks of their people – the Minyans of Minyos. “The Quest is the Quest!” Will our heroes uncover the secrets of the P7E spaceship that’s buried in a planet made of meteorites? Here we are on the fourth story in Season 15 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, based on its ‘Collection’ Blu-ray box set. It’s time for ‘The Sun Makers’ by Robert Holmes, directed by the late Pennant Roberts. This is a ‘Doctor Who’ story where the planet Pluto is being taxed to death. There’s Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Louise Jameson as Leela, and K-9, voiced by John Leeson. It’s good to see K-9 appear properly in this ‘Doctor Who’ story, following his absence in ‘Image of the Fendahl’. There’s a good guest cast in this adventure, including the likes of Henry Woolf, Richard Leech, Jonina Scott, Roy Macready, David Rowlands, William Simons, Adrienne Burgess and Michael Keating. Let’s check out the second story of Season 15 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘The Invisible Enemy’ by Bob Baker and Dave Martin, starring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Louise Jameson as Leela and K-9, voiced by John Leeson. Yes! This is where K-9 makes his debut as a ‘Doctor Who’ companion in the classic TV series. Or rather where K-9 Mark I makes his debut. It’s been great to revisit ‘The Invisible Enemy’ on Blu-ray, especially through the CGI effects option. It’s Bank Holiday Monday in August in the UK (England, Wales and Northern Ireland to be precise) in 2024 today. Here’s my updated review on the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Celestial Toymaker’. This updated review is based on the latest in a line of mostly missing black-and-white ‘Doctor Who’ TV stories from the 1960s that have been animated on DVD and Blu-ray for today. The story stars William Hartnell as the First Doctor, Peter Purves as Steven Taylor and Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet. This story also features Michael Gough in the titular role of the Toymaker. I’ve just updated my review on the Target novelization ‘Doctor Who and the Horns of Nimon’ by Terrance Dicks. This ‘Doctor Who’ story features the Fourth Doctor, Romana II and K-9 Mark II. I revisited this Target novelization with the latest BBC audiobook read by Geoffrey Beevers, who is well-known for playing the Master and voicing the Melkur in ‘The Keeper of Traken’.
