Day 12 – ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2024

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s Day 12 of ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2024.

Happy Birthday, Sarah! 🙂

Here’s the twelfth Christmas recommendation by me on ‘Bradley’s Basement’.

Sarah Sutton is my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ actress, and it’s always a treat to check out and revisit her non-‘Doctor Who’ works, including the 1973 TV movie ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, which was first shown in the UK on BBC TV on December the 25th in 1975.

At the time this was made, Sarah Sutton was 11 years old. The production values are also very different compared to what we see today in modern productions of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’. For one thing, CSO is used greatly. 🙂

By that, I mean Colour Separation Overlay, where actors had to work against a blue screen with models (or in this case, drawings/illustrations) to create the illusion that a character is (or characters are) in a unique world. It must have been state-of-the-art then.

Nowadays, CGI effects are used more often with actors working against a blue screen or a green screen in TV and film. It might make the 1973 TV film seem low budget, but that doesn’t spoil me enjoying seeing Sarah Sutton playing Alice in this unique TV production.

I’m sure plenty of young viewers enjoyed watching ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ starring Sarah Sutton on Christmas Day in 1973. If you’re able to check out ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ on a US DVD or somewhere on YouTube, I highly recommend seeing it.

Thanks for reading!

Tim 🙂
