Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time for us to delve into the Target novelization/audiobook of the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘Vengeance on Varos’ by Philip Martin, based on the original TV scripts. The Target novelization was published in June 1988, three years after the TV story was transmitted in January 1985. The story features the Sixth Doctor and Peri where they visit Varos and encounter the slimy Sil. I’ve greatly enjoyed checking out the Target novelization, along with the 2019 unabridged audiobook read by Martin Jarvis, who played the Governor in the TV story. Over the years, I’ve considered ‘Vengeance on Varos’ a decent ‘Doctor Who’ story featuring themes of how violence can used as entertainment for TV audiences. Continue reading →

Today in our look of Season 2 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series via its Blu-ray box set, it’s time to check out one of the most ambitious ‘Doctor Who’ stories ever made from the William Hartnell/First Doctor era. It’s time for ‘The Web Planet’, a six-part adventure by Bill Strutton. This story has our heroes – William Hartnell as the First Doctor, William Russell as Ian, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara and Maureen O’Brien as Vicki – visiting the planet Vortis. On the planet, there are a variety of insect-like aliens, including the butterfly-like Menoptera, the ant-like Zarbi, the worm-like Larvae Guns (Venom Grubs), the woodlice-like Optera and the spider-like Animus. In today’s instalment of the ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon on ‘Bradley’s Basement’, we’re looking at probably one of the most divisive stories ever featured in the classic TV series. It’s time for ‘Vengeance on Varos’, another two-part story, with the episodes being 45 minutes each, by Philip Martin, starring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri. This story also introduces us to Nabil Shaban as the slimy and villainous Sil. There’s also special guest star Martin Jarvis as the Governor on the planet Varos, and there are guest stars like Stephen Yardley, Sheila Reid and Owen Teale. ‘Vengeance on Varos’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and Britbox. It’s time for the second story in Season 11 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series called ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs’, starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. This six-part adventure also features Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier, Richard Franklin as Mike Yates (this story sees a character change in Mike) and John Levene as Sergeant Benton. This is a novelization on the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV story, ‘Invasion of Dinosaurs’, with the Third Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith and U.N.I.T. The audiobook is read by Martin Jarvis, who played Butler in the TV story.
