‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Reflection on the Tenth Doctor

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

The David Tennant/Tenth Doctor era of ‘Doctor Who’ is an era that means a lot to me, as it was the one I grew up with when being properly introduced to the TV series in 2006. Whilst Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor is my favourite, David Tennant comes close to being second favourite from the TV series. 🙂

It helps that David Tennant and Peter Davison encountered each other as the Tenth and Fifth Doctors in the mini-episode ‘Time Crash’ and recently in the Big Finish audio drama ‘The Gates of Hell’. And of course, David Tennant married Peter Davison’s daughter Georgia from the TV series. 😀

Whilst I write a lot of my ‘Doctor Who’ stories featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy, it’s from the energy and spirit of the Tenth Doctor era that inspires me to write my stories. I’ve even written stories with the Tenth Doctor and Donna, including ‘The Vexo Knights Experience’ and ‘The Popiz’. 🙂

There are four stages of the Tenth Doctor in his era. The first is with Rose Tyler, the second is with Martha Jones, the third is with Donna Noble and the fourth is where he travels alone. I always enjoy the Tenth Doctor at whatever stage of his life he’s in. David Tennant’s presence in his stories helps. 🙂

He’s able to project the electrifying energy and enthusiasm that’s featured throughout his performances as the Tenth Doctor. This is in both the TV series and the Big Finish audios. It does illustrate how amazing an actor he is and how dedicated a ‘Doctor Who’ fan he is, on and off-screen.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting David Tennant briefly at the ‘London Comic Con Winter’ in November 2022 as well as have photos with him. I quoted from ‘Time Crash’, saying to him, “You know what, Doctor? You were my Doctor.” He seemed very chuffed about that. I’m pleased I said it.

I’m happy that David Tennant has reprised his role of the Tenth Doctor in the Big Finish audios; before, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. The David Tennant/Tenth Doctor era is one I regard highly, as I look forward to checking out more adventures with this specific incarnation of the character.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

David Tennant’s Doctor has been called the equivalent to Tom Baker’s in the classic series and I can agree. After Tennant’s era, it would prove most challenging to fully recapture the best potential for the modern Who. Thank you, Tim.

      Hi scifimike,

It certainly would be challenging to follow up on what David Tennant delivered to us as the Tenth Doctor after his and the original RTD era ended at the beginning of 2010. As much as I’ve enjoyed Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi as the Doctors in the Steven Moffat era, I’m not as excited about them as I am when David Tennant plays the Doctor. I’m sure David will give us more than 100% in his performance as the Fourteenth Doctor in the upcoming 60th anniversary specials.

Glad you enjoyed my reflection on the Tenth Doctor era of ‘Doctor Who’.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂
