Season 20 of ‘Doctor Who’ with Peter Davison on Blu-ray #3

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

In the third week of our look into Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, it’s time to check out the third story of the season called ‘Mawdryn Undead’, which is also the first story of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’. This is a four-part story by Peter Grimwade, who previously directed ‘Full Circle’, ‘Logopolis’, ‘Kinda’ and ‘Earthshock’ and wrote ‘Time-Flight’. The story is directed by Peter Moffatt, who previously directed ‘State of Decay’ and ‘The Visitation’. ‘Mawdryn Undead’ stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Janet Fielding as Tegan. The story features the return of Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the introduction of new ‘Doctor Who’ companion Mark Strickson as Turlough, and the return of Valentine Dyall as the Black Guardian. There’s also David Collings as the titular Mawdryn.

It’s been great to revisit ‘Mawdryn Undead’ on Blu-ray, especially with the CGI effects option switched on. I’ve also enjoyed the special features on the Blu-ray disc for ‘Mawdryn Undead’, including the ‘Behind the Sofa’ item on the story with Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding, Mark Strickson, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Katy Manning and Sophie Aldred. I’ve also enjoyed the ‘Once Upon a Time Lord’ documentary on ‘Doctor Who’ fandom in the USA, with behind-the-scenes interviews with producer John Nathan-Turner, Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Anthony Ainley and writer Terry Nation. There’s also a convention panel with Sarah Sutton and Mark Strickson at ‘MonsterCon II’ held in 1986, which I’ve enjoyed. It was good to see the ‘Liberty Hall’ mini-episode, starring Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier, and the ‘Points of View’ item.

Please feel free to check out, read and comment on my updated review for ‘Mawdryn Undead’ by clicking on the link for it. This contains a review on the TV story and a slightly updated review on the Target novelization/audiobook ‘Doctor Who – Mawdryn Undead’ by Peter Grimwade, read by David Collings. There are also two brand-new reviews on the ‘Who Wants to Live Forever?’ making-of documentary for ‘Mawdryn Undead’, and on the ‘Finding Mark Strickson’ featurette with Mark Strickson, which was originally on Disc 2 of the ‘Enlightenment’ 2-disc DVD set in ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ DVD box set and is now on Disc 3 of the Season 20 Blu-ray box set containing ‘Mawdryn Undead’. There’s also my review on Issue #110 of ‘Doctor Who Magazine’, which features an interview with Sarah Sutton.

You can purchase ‘Doctor Who – The Collection – Season 20’ on Blu-ray either from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com.

Enjoy!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂
