‘Call the Midwife’, Series 9, Episode 3 (TV)

SERIES 9, EPISODE 3

Please feel free to comment on my review.

It was another enjoyable Sunday evening on the 19th of January 2020 with an episode of ‘Doctor Who’‘Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror’ – and an episode of ‘Call the Midwife’. I felt content at the time.

Series 9, Episode 3 of ‘Call the Midwife’ has some solid character drama again! It was also intriguing to explore medical practices being handled in the 1960s as they appear different compared to today.

The first thing I noticed about this ‘Call the Midwife’ episode was that its writer is Helen Raynor. Helen Raynor was one time the script editor of the new ‘Doctor Who’ series for its first four seasons.

She also wrote two 2-part stories including ‘Daleks In Manhattan’/’Evolution of the Daleks’ and ‘The Sontaran Stratagem’/’The Poison Sky’. It’s amazing to find her writing a ‘Call the Midwife’ episode. 🙂

In this episode, Leonie Elliot as Lucille has been seconded to help out at St. Cuthbert’s Hospital when one of the ward sisters is off sick. Lucille willingly helps out, but she finds herself facing challenges. 😐

This involves a difficult mother – Hannah Onslow as Connie Blair – who is less than kind in one of the wards. Lucille also has a challenge when Connie is about to have her baby being delivered in a lift. 😀

This episode also features the return of Zephryn Taitte as Cyril, Lucille’s boyfriend. It was nice to see Cyril back in the series as well as his trusty motorcycle and side-car when taking Lucille out on a date.

Cyril does have to wait for Lucille to return from her overrunning hospital jobs at St. Cuthbert’s. Sometimes, he’s being charmingly entertained by Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan in the episode. 🙂

I like how Cyril is patient about Lucille running late in her hospital job and he’s happy to see her once she has returned to Nonnatus House. I enjoyed the scenes where they do have their dates together.

These dates are at a Caribbean restaurant. 😀 I also like how Cyril shares with Lucille how he’s doing in his latest exams. At the episode’s end, Cyril gets to preach at Lucille’s worship group, which is nice.

Also in the episode, Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane gets to deal with the mother of two boys Rahul and Jalal who come from East Pakistan (Bangladesh). It’s unclear what latest jabs the two boys have had.

The mother – Salma Hoque as Farzina Mohammed – happens to have a serious bladder problem following a prolonged pregnancy and labour. She’s quite ill and she doesn’t speak very much English.

Nurse Crane acquires the help of the two boys Rahul and Jalal to find their father – Shahnewaz Jake as Ayub Mohammed – who abandoned their mother because he believed her to be pretty unclean. 😦

They get Ayub to persuade Farzina to receive help from the doctors and nurses. Nurse Crane also has Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner to help out when they visit the mother’s quite run-down home. 🙂

The episode features subtitles when Ayub and Farzina speak to each other in another language. It was fascinating how Ayub and Farzina’s emotions came across once they spoke in another language.

The episode also features some of the ‘Call the Midwife’ characters putting on a charity fashion show for the community to raise some money for the incubator fund. This was a fun aside to see. 😀

It was nice to see Laura Main as Shelagh Turner, Annabelle Apsion as Violet, Helen George as Trixie, Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances and Jennifer Kirby as Valerie becoming involved in the fashion show.

The fashions featured in the show are pretty unique to say the least. Trixie’s fashion outfits put people off, making them disapprove and walk out since they’re…well, rather revealing for their time.

It was amusing to see that in the episode. Thankfully, it raises the money for the incubator fund. All things are well. 🙂 And there were some decent fashions being worn by Valerie and such in the show.

I enjoyed Series 9, Episode 3 of ‘Call the Midwife’ very much. I enjoyed Lucille’s journey in how she manages to cope at a hospital. I do like how her relationship with Cyril is blossoming and developing.

It was also interesting to see how Nurse Crane helped a suffering Pakistani lady with her two little boys and how her husband helped in the end. The fashion show was also fun to see in the episode. 🙂

‘Series 9, Episode 3’ rating – 8/10
