‘SCARBOROUGH TO LANGTHWAITE’
Please feel free to comment on my review.

I didn’t expect ‘Great British Car Journeys’ to come back so soon for a second series in October 2019 on Channel 4. I enjoyed the first series with its three episodes broadcast in the UK in February 2019.
It was nice to see Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison reunite together from working on the original ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ 1978-1990 TV series to appear in this documentary TV series.
I honestly didn’t expect a second series to be made of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ as I thought that would be it with just one series. But it turned out the series was successful to warrant a second one.
I was so pleased to hear the news via Facebook somewhere – most likely the Peter Davison Hub. I saw the first Series 2 episode of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ on Saturday the 12th of October 2019. 🙂
In Series 1, Chris Timothy and Peter Davison took car journeys in a 1930s vintage car, going to places in Scotland, England and Wales. It was great fun watching them doing those car journeys in Series 1.
I wasn’t sure how the makers of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ would follow up on the success of Series 1 with Series 2. I was keen to find out when I began watching Series 2 with its first episode on TV. 😀
In the first episode of Series 2, Chris and Peter journey in their Morgan 4/4 to revisit the Yorkshire Dales. They journey from Scarborough on the Herriot trail to the Dales before reaching Langthwaite.
And yes! In this episode, Chris and Peter get to revisit the area where they filmed the original ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ series in its seven seasons. As you can tell, this episode was so appealing.
It was amazing to see Chris and Peter return to where their TV home was and to hear some behind-the-scenes information on the making of the original ‘All Creatures’ series. Something that is rare! 😐
In many ways, you can argue ‘Great British Car Journeys’ is a chance to get some behind-the-scenes knowledge on what the original ‘All Creatures’ show was like to make, especially from its two stars. 🙂
This exciting journey the two gents venture on includes them meeting with Jim Wight, the son of Alf Wight who wrote the original ‘James Herriot’ books under that pseudonym for the show to be made.
Chris Timothy also meets up with the son of the person who trained him to be a TV vet within a week, which was amazing to hear. It must have been a huge challenge for Chris to learn to be a TV vet.
Of course, it wasn’t just all about ‘All Creatures’ in this episode. They also checked out some vintage vehicles. This included Chris Timothy driving a red tractor, which must have been a lot of fun for him.
Chris and Peter also get to see a vintage Aston Martin car that apparently was in the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’ no less. 😀 I’m not a James Bond fan, but I’ve seen ‘Goldfinger’ a couple of times now. 😀
This turned out to be a special and nostalgic drive for Chris and Peter. They also drove up a steep hill called the Rosedale Chimney and this happens to be the steepest hill ever in the whole of England. 🙂
As they drive up the Rosedale Chimney, they sing the well-known hymn ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’. I am amazed Peter and Chris got to sing the hymn when they were journeying up that very steep hill!
The two also had a comfortable ride in a red steam car which was fun to see. Chris Timothy suggested riding all the way to the Dales in the steam car instead of their Morgan 4/4. It’d be nice. 😀
Eventually, Chris and Peter arrived in the Dales, staying overnight at the Skeldale House B&B in Askrigg, North Yorkshire. It was so surreal to see Chris and Peter standing outside Skeldale House. 😀
Skeldale House of course was used as the exterior for the vets’ surgery in the original ‘All Creatures’ series. I’m saddened we didn’t get to see inside the house as Peter and Chris stayed overnight there.
Fortunately, Chris and Peter did get to recreate the first opening title sequence of ‘All Creatures’ with a vintage car that looked like Siegfried’s car. 🙂 It’s nice they were able to do that in this episode.
However, they used the wrong theme music as it was the Series 4 theme music that was used, not the Series 1 theme music. I was disappointed. But I found out an amusing behind-the-scenes titbit. 🙂
It was revealed Robert Hardy and Christopher Timothy shared a pretty dirty joke when they were laughing during the original opening title sequence of ‘All Creatures’. Thank goodness it got muted. 🙂
I greatly enjoyed the first episode of Series 2 of ‘Great British Car Journeys’ with Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison. I was looking forward to the next three episodes of Series 2 of this lovely series. 🙂
‘Scarborough to Langthwaite’ rating – 9/10
