Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
Yes! We’re back with Season 20 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series! After checking out Series 15 of the new TV series with Ncuti Gatwa, it’s time to pick up where we left off with our look into Peter Davison’s second season as the Fifth Doctor. Today, we’re checking out the fifth story called ‘Enlightenment’. It’s also the third story of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’. ‘Enlightenment’ is a four-part adventure by the late Barbara Clegg. This is his first and only contribution to the TV series. The story is directed by the late Fiona Cumming, who previously directed ‘Snakedance’. ‘Enlightenment’ stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Mark Strickson as Turlough. Valentine Dyall returns for his third appearance in Season 20 and we have the return of Cyril Luckhman as the White Guardian, who previously debuted in ‘The Ribos Operation’ in ‘The Key to Time’ season (Season 16).
It’s been nice revisiting ‘Enlightenment’ on Blu-ray. I’ve seen two versions of this story, including the original four-part story with the latest Blu-ray CGI effects option switched on. I’ve also seen the 75-minute Special Edition movie version of the story directed by Fiona Cumming, which was released on Disc 2 of the 2-disc DVD set in ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ DVD box set. I’ve enjoyed the ‘Behind the Sofa’ item on the story with Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding, Mark Strickson, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Katy Manning and Sophie Aldred. It’s been good to see the ‘Winner Takes All’ DVD making-of documentary on Blu-ray. I’ve enjoyed the DVD Easter Eggs compilation on Blu-ray, including the photo gallery on the making of ‘The Black Guardian Trilogy’ DVD box set, which features behind-the-scenes photos of Sarah Sutton being interviewed. There’s a brand-new visual effects featurette for ‘Enlightenment’ on Blu-ray that I’ve enjoyed.
Please feel free to check out, read and comment on my updated review for ‘Enlightenment’ by clicking on the link for it. This contains a review on the TV story and a slightly updated review on the Target novelization/audiobook ‘Doctor Who – Enlightenment’ by Barbara Clegg, read by Steven Pacey. There’s also a brand-new review on the ‘Winner Takes All’ making-of documentary for ‘Enlightenment’. I’ve created three new reaction videos on certain characters and moments in the story for people to enjoy.
You can purchase ‘Doctor Who – The Collection – Season 20’ on Blu-ray either from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com.
Enjoy!
Bye for now!
Tim. 🙂
