It’s time for us to check out the third story in Season 9 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. Today, it’s ‘The Sea Devils’, a six-part story by Malcolm Hulke, starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant. We return to Earth where the Doctor and Jo are helped, not by U.N.I.T. this time, but by the Royal Navy, led by Edwin Richfield as Captain Hart. The story features the return of Roger Delgado as the Master, who previously appeared at the end of Season 8 in ‘The Dæmons’ where he was arrested. ‘The Sea Devils’ is also a sequel to the Season 7 story ‘Doctor Who and the Silurians’, where we met the Sea Devils’ land-based cousins.

I’ve greatly enjoyed revisiting one of my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ stories from the Jon Pertwee/Third Doctor era in the Season 9 Blu-ray box set. I’ve had the chance to check out not just the original six-part TV story, but also the 90-minute omnibus movie edition of ‘The Sea Devils’, which was shown over Christmas in December 1972. I’ve also enjoyed the ‘Behind the Sofa’ item of ‘The Sea Devils’, featuring Katy Manning, director Michael E. Briant, Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton, Janet Fielding, Wendy Padbury and Sophie Aldred. It was also good to revisit the ‘Musical Scales’ featurette, carried over from the ‘Doctor Who and the Silurians’ 2-disc DVD set to be put on Disc 4 of the Season 9 Blu-ray box set. There’s also the ‘Location, Location, Location – Season 9’ documentary with Katy Manning, the ‘Michael E. Briant: At the Helm’ documentary with director Michael E. Briant and ‘The Fell Guy’ documentary with Stuart Fell to check out.
