Convention Report – ‘Devcon Sci-Fi, Toy, Film & Comic Fair’ (March 2024)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

I had a lovely time attending the ‘Devcon Sci-Fi, Toy, Film & Comic Fair’ at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Plymouth last weekend on Sunday the 3rd of March. My parents joined me. 😀 We spent the weekend enjoying and exploring Plymouth on the Saturday and enjoying attending ‘Devcon’ on the Sunday. 🙂

The highlight guests for ‘Devcon’ were Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) and Paul McGann (the Eighth Doctor) in ‘Doctor Who’. It was lovely to see the two stars at the event. I had some lovely chats with them; I enjoyed the Q&A panel talk they had, and I had some nice photos with Sarah and Paul. A very successful day! 🙂

On the Saturday, my parents and I enjoyed visiting Hoe Park in Plymouth. We got to see Smeaton’s Tower, we walked along the coast, and my cuddly toy dog Buggles and his friend Donald the Duck got to be on a model of the H.M.S. Cornwall. 😀 We took photos of Sir Francis Drake’s statue and the Plymouth Naval Memorial, and I took a photo of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

It was lovely to see and catch-up with Sarah Sutton at ‘Devcon’. Sarah signed my CD box set cover of the second ‘Timeslip’ audio story ‘The War That Never Was’. I also had a couple of selfies with Sarah, using the camera on my Samsung phone, including one of me with Sarah and my cuddly toy dog Cuddles. 🙂

There was also a selfie taken of me with Sarah and my parents. Sarah was so lovely and kind to us that day. I also conducted an interview with Sarah, which we did in a room outside the signing and merchandise area. I’ll be sharing that interview sometime very soon. It’s always a joy to meet up with Sarah at these events.

It was also good to see Paul McGann at ‘Devcon’, who I had a nice time chatting to at the event. Paul signed my Special Edition DVD cover of the ‘Doctor Who’ TV Movie, which had already been signed by Daphne Ashbrook. I enjoyed it when Paul and I exchanged our thoughts about ‘The TV Movie’. 🙂

I had a selfie taken of me with Paul at the event and he had his sonic screwdriver with him. 😀 My Mum got to meet up with Paul before me and it was interesting to hear from him how much he rates the 1998 BBC TV production of ‘Our Mutual Friend’ highly and as one of his favourites, which I’m glad to hear.

As ever with conventions and comic cons like this, there had to be Daleks attending ‘Devcon’. 😀 There were two black Daleks patrolling the signing and merchandise area when I was there that day. I managed to take a couple of photos of them whilst at the event. Thankfully, I wasn’t exterminated. 🙂

After doing a circuit around the Hoe Park area for a bit at around lunch-time, my parents and I enjoyed Paul and Sarah’s Q&A talk at 2pm, hosted by the Fourth Doctor himself. 😀 I greatly enjoyed their Q&A talk, as Paul and Sarah shared anecdotes about making ‘Doctor Who’ on TV and on audio. 🙂

Paul was very enthusiastic throughout the Q&A when sharing his memories of making ‘The TV Movie’ and his interaction with Sarah was great. I helped Sarah out a bit by reminding her about the ion bonder prop she used in ‘Doctor Who’. She shared to everyone that I’m her friend, which was sweet of her. 🙂

Sarah asked me to ask her a simple question during the Q&A, which I did and it was “What was your favourite colour?” to which she answered “Green.” 😀 I also mentioned about ‘A Heart on Both Sides’, which had Nyssa meeting the Eighth Doctor. Paul was surprised that Sarah voiced his Doctor in that story.

The day concluded with me having professional photo shoots with Sarah and Paul at about 3pm that afternoon. It was nice to have professional photos taken of me with Sarah and Paul at ‘Devcon’. I also got to say goodbye to Sarah before she left for the day. A very satisfying way to end the day on. 🙂

‘Devcon Sci-Fi, Toy, Film & Comic Fair’ was a worthwhile event for me and my parents. We enjoyed seeing Sarah Sutton and Paul McGann, and I’m very pleased I got to catch up with Sarah early in March this year. It’s always a joy to spend time chatting with Sarah, since she’s a lovely and kind lady to interact with.

I’m currently looking forward to seeing Sarah Sutton again along with Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor) at the ‘Comic Con Mania Leicester’ event in April this year.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

Hello Tim, An interesting report. As someone who lives over the river in Cornwall I know Plymouth well. Glad you had a good time there with your folks. The Doctor Who actors are lively the fans, I do have a soft spot for these two. Sarah Sutton because the gentle mobility she brought to the role and the way in the audios particularly she’s been given the opportunity to show what a good character Nyssa is. Her performance in Spare Parts, Creatures of Beauty and Fanfare for the Commen Men are just three that I really enjoyed.

I was bitterly disappointed that Paul McGann wasn’t given more of a run on tv. The movie with all its faults demonstrates the Eighth Doctor in a nutshell. Passionate, with an exhuberant zest for life, his first meeting with Charley Pollard is wonderful. My personal favourite is the EDAs on audio with Sheridan Smith’s iconic Lucie Miller.

Thanks for your report. Best wishes, Tony.

      Hi Tony,

Very pleased you enjoyed my latest convention report on the ‘Devcon’ event. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I had a great time last weekend, especially with seeing Sarah Sutton and Paul McGann. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about them. I’ve greatly enjoyed Sarah Sutton’s performances as Nyssa in both the TV series and the Big Finish audios. I especially like the audios you mentioned as well as ‘Circular Time’ and ‘The Stockbridge Trilogy’ (‘Castle of Fear’, ‘The Eternal Summer’ and ‘Plague of the Daleks’), which I’m currently revisiting.

I’m pleased that Paul McGann has been given the chance to reprise his role as the Eighth Doctor in the Big Finish audios since doing ‘The TV Movie’. So far, I’ve enjoyed listening to certain stories featuring him with Charley Pollard and Lucie Miller and I’ve enjoyed the 2003 audio adaptation of ‘Shada’ with Paul McGann and Lalla Ward. I’m sure I’ll be enjoying more of his stories by Big Finish in future.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂
