Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
It’s Day 22 of ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendar 2022.
Let’s see how the Cybermen make their return in the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘Earthshock’.
This video includes the closing moments of ‘Part One’ of ‘Earthshock’ and the reveal of the 1980s Cybermen, with their Cyber Leader played by David Banks. I’m sure for viewers who watched this ‘Doctor Who’ story in 1982, it must have been very exciting to see this story on its initial transmission.
It also must have been a shocking surprise for ‘Doctor Who’ fans, considering the Cybermen hadn’t been seen for a long time since ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ in 1975. I wish my excitement of the ‘Part One’ cliffhanger extended to the Cybermen themselves, but I suppose there are fans of them. 😀
‘Earthshock’ was the first classic TV series ‘Doctor Who’ story I’d ever seen, following my viewing of the new series episodes with the likes of ‘Rise of the Cybermen’/’The Age of Steel’ and ‘Army of Ghosts’/’Doomsday’. This was also my first encounter of Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor with Nyssa, Tegan and Adric.
I did think it rude of Lt. Scott to tell the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan to ‘shut up’ when he, Professor Kyle and their troops found them in the caves. Mind you, I was inspired by this meeting when I wrote ‘Part One’ of ‘Doom of the Daleks’ when the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Billy ended up on Yondamus IV.
The tension is raised when the two androids attack the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, Scott, Kyle and their troops in the caves to protect their hatch. It builds up the reveal of the Cybermen nicely, especially when they are looking through one of the androids’ viewfinders and they close in upon the Doctor. 🙂
Thanks for watching and reading!
Check out what Day 22 of my ‘Bradley’s Basement’s Advent Calendars for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 were about!
Bye for now!

Hi Tim
I enjoyed your review of this ‘Earthshock’ YouTube clip. Thinking back to it, it’s kind of worse than I remember. It’s something I’ll have to address when it comes to rewatching and reviewing the story next year.
I agree about Lieutenant Scott being rude. I also found him to be socially awkward, like when he grabbed the Doctor and pinned him to the ground. And his repetition of ‘shut up’ really annoyed me. As for the cliffhanger, it’s ok, although the Doctor’s reaction doesn’t really matchup I feel, since he can’t see the Cybermen.
BTW, I’m thinking of rewatching ‘Black Orchid’ early in order to do a review of it for January. I hope that won’t affect the discussion on it. My ‘Castrovalva’ review should be out then as well. I’ve been busy writing up reviews for other things, such as ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. Have you seen that sitcom Tim?
Take care, WF92.

Hi WF92,
Glad you enjoyed my review of this ‘Earthshock’ YouTube clip. I look forward to when you do your review on ‘Earthshock’. Ooh, Lt. Scott is rubbing you off the wrong way in that YouTube clip, isn’t he? 😀 Thanks for sharing your thoughts about him as well as the cliffhanger to ‘Part One’. I look forward to your reviews on both ‘Castrovalva’ and ‘Black Orchid’. I haven’t seen ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. I’ve seen clips of it and I’ve seen Will Smith in those clips, but I’ve not seen it properly. Hope you’re enjoying it so far.
Many thanks for your comments.
Tim 🙂
