‘RULES OF ENGAGEMENT’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is another ‘DS9’ episode directed by LeVar Burton who played Geordi La Forge in ‘TNG’. I could tell LeVar Burton had a creative stance on this episode as it features a trial presented in a unique way.
In the episode, Worf finds himself on trial…or in an extradition hearing about his recent activities commanding the starship Defiant. This was in an escort mission to guard Cardassian vessels in space.
Unfortunately, the Defiant was under attack by Klingon raiders. During the battle, a Klingon vessel decloaked in front of the Defiant. Worf anticipated that this was a Klingon warship, but it was not. 😐
It happened to be a Klingon civilian transport. Worf ordered the Defiant to fire upon it immediately without visual confirmation. This was a mistake on Worf’s part as the Klingon Empire want him tried.
That is tried in their court on Qo’noS I believe. This is an interesting situation for Worf where he’s tried on whether he’s a Klingon warrior or a Starfleet officer and whether he felt like a warrior here.
During Worf’s extradition hearing, it’s presided by Deborah Strang as Admiral T’Lara. There’s also Ron Canada as Ch’Pok, the Klingon advocate who wants to take Worf back to the Klingon Empire. 😐
One by one, many of Worf’s friends and acquaintances are forced to testify his character in front of Ch’Pok and T’Lara. Sisko is there to be Worf’s defence lawyer and prove he acted as a Starfleet officer.
The people testifying in this episode include Jadzia Dax, Sisko himself, Quark and Chief O’Brien. We see the scenes played out whist sometimes the characters break the fourth wall to give evidence. 😀
This was an intriguing way to see the trial being conducted, making it more interesting and visual. It surprised me as people like Jadzia, Sisko, Quark and O’Brien were looking at us to answer questions.
They’re of course answering questions given to them by Ch’Pok the Klingon advocate. Worf himself is even made to testify what did happen when he commanded the Defiant and how he felt that day.
Sadly, in their testimonies, the witnesses are either bolstering Worf’s defence or damaging it. Jadzia, when questioned, is forced to answer whether Worf enjoyed fighting in a Klingon holosuite program.
Quark, not really a friend of Worf’s in my opinion, reveals that Worf was looking forward to it should he face any Klingons in battle whilst on the Defiant. That isn’t helping things for Worf here, Quark. 😐
Though I did find it funny when Worf kept changing the story much to the audience of Ch’Pok at times! Chief O’Brien however confesses that the combat experienced is not what he would’ve done.
At the time, he was following Worf’s orders. But during the hearing, he says he wouldn’t have fired instantly on the Klingon transport ship when it decloaked. Not very much in Worf’s favour here, is it?
Ch’Pok goes further in his questions to Worf when he provokes him to attack him during his hearing. It proves a point. Ch’Pok claims he was unarmed and Worf said he would not hurt an unarmed man.
It does get very tense when it seems like Worf might not get out of this trial he’s in. I mean, we as the audience know and hope he’ll get out of it, but it must’ve been pretty tense at the time of this. 🙂
Eventually, Constable Odo has been investigating and he uncovers some evidence regarding the transport ship that decloaked. Apparently, there is a conspiracy here regarding the transport ship. 😐
The names of all the 441 people who died on the transport ship were the exact same names of people who died on another similar transport ship three months prior to this incident. Interesting! 🙂
Sisko concludes when questioning Ch’Pok that the whole incident was staged by the Klingon Empire to frame Worf for the purpose of smearing the Federation. Ch’Pok soon backs out of this hearing. 😀
Despite Worf being cleared, Sisko still criticises him for the mistakes he made when he commanded the Defiant that day. Thankfully Sisko encourages Worf by saying he’ll make a fine captain some day.
‘Rules of Engagement’ has been a very satisfying and enjoyable episode featuring Worf on trial. I enjoyed how it was presented via LeVar Burton’s direction and the acting and the writing were good. 🙂
