‘LITTLE GREEN MEN’ (DS9)
Please feel free to comment on my review.

This is considered one of the most popular time-travel stories to be featured in ‘Star Trek’ and it features the three Ferengi – Quark, Rom and Nog as a family unit here. My parents enjoyed this one too.
In the episode, Aron Eisenberg as Nog is about to head off to Earth to join Starfleet Academy. Max Grodénchik as Rom is really pleased for him. Quark also receives a Ferengi ship from his cousin Gaila.
Apparently, it’s a ship that Gaila had promised Quark for many years. For its maiden voyage, Quark decides to take his brother Rom and nephew Nog to Earth where Nog can attend Starfleet Academy.
Once they leave DS9, Rom learns that Quark has smuggled a load of volatile kemocite to make the trip financially profitable. Rom and Nog agree to keep quiet so long as Quark gives them some profit.
The ship soon reaches Earth but Rom is unable to drop out of warp. Apparently, the ship was sabotaged by Quark’s cousin Gaila. Yes, apparently Quark didn’t get on well with Gaila last they met.
Rom has an idea though. He decides to vent the warp exhaust through the kemocite cargo. This will enable the ship out of warp. Unfortunately, in doing so, the ship and the Ferengi travel back in time!
They end up in July 1947 and crash-land near Roswell in New Mexico. If you know where this is going, this happens to be where the Roswell UFO incident happened. And the Ferengi are the aliens!
It was amusing when the Ferengi wake up in a US military base and the Americans believe them to be Martians. The Ferengi also have their universal translators broken as the humans speak gibberish.
At least from the Ferengi’s point of view. It works vice versa as the American can only hear the Ferengi speaking their Ferengi language with the universal translators off. That’s pretty intriguing. 😀
It was fun to hear Quark, Rom and Nog speaking an alien language for a bit from the humans’ point of view. It was also amusing when the Ferengi banged their heads and the human mimicked them. 🙂
There’s also an awful lot of smoking featured in the episode as the Americans smoke a lot of cigarettes and cigars. I’m glad I’m not living in those times. Smoking is very bad for you, you know. 😀
Thankfully, Rom repairs the malfunctioning universal translators and Quark tries to make negotiations with the humans. He considers 1940s humans backward, gullible and easily persuaded.
Quark offers the humans advanced technology from the future. Rom and Nog are concerned as Quark’s offer would change the future. But Quark does not care as he wishes to ruin his own empire.
Eventually, unknown to them, the Ferengi are joined by Odo who stowed away aboard their ship and disguised himself as a guard dog to gain access. It was amusing when Quark saw Odo appear to him.
Odo places Quark under arrest for his kemocite smuggling which he’d been aware of. They also try to find a way to get out of the time period they’re in, despite Quark insisting that they stay on Earth.
Unfortunately, Quark, Rom and Nog get interrogated by James G. MacDonald as army officer Wainwright. The US army are suspicious of the Ferengi’s intentions, believing them to be invaders. 😐
Thankfully, the Ferengi are helped by Megan Gallagher as Nurse Garland and Conor O’Farrell as Professor Carlson who’ve been establishing contact with the aliens. They’re also the friendly humans. 🙂
Incidentally, Megan Gallagher was in the ‘DS9’ episode ‘Invasive Procedures’ before this. The Nurse Garland and Professor Carlson characters represent that idealism in ‘Star Trek’, despite the smoking.
Charles Napier also guest stars as General Denning who’s suspicious of Quark when he made an offer to him. It was so amusing to see him smoke big cigars in this episode like an American general.
The Ferengi and Odo soon get helped to return to their ship by Garland and Carlson. They return to their own time by harnessing the energy of an atomic bomb scheduled for one morning in Nevada. 🙂
‘Little Green Men’ is an amusing and enjoyable ‘DS9’ episode featuring the Ferengi at Roswell in 1947. It’s considered a popular ‘DS9’ episode. I first saw it on a ‘Star Trek’ time travel DVD collection.
