SERIES 8, EPISODE 5
Please feel free to comment on my review.

I’m five episodes into Series 8 of ‘Call the Midwife’! 😀 I enjoyed Series 8, Episode 5, which my parents and I watched on TV via BBC1 on Sunday the 10th February 2019. A change of routine here!
We usually watched the new episodes of ‘Call the Midwife’ in Series 8 and 9 on BBC iPlayer. On this occasion, we didn’t have any major church commitments on that particular evening as we usually did.
So we were able to watch the episode on TV instead. At this point, I don’t know how the future will be for us to watch episodes of Series 11 and 12, whether it will be on BBC iPlayer or on the TV itself.
This is another interesting episode in the series as many of the ‘Call the Midwife’ episodes are. It deals with a pretty sensitive topic. I was pretty shocked by what the sensitive topic turned out to be.
In the episode, Helen George as Nurse Trixie deals with a young woman – Holly Freeman as Lois Parry – who gets diagnosed with an unusual, disturbing intersex condition. Are you ready for this? 😐
It turns out that Lois, who is a woman, happens to have male sex organs in her body. This means that she can’t have children with another man. And she’s about to get married to the man she loves.
Wow! I had no idea that there were women who had this condition. It must be a pretty rare thing to happen and it was very intriguing to see how the ‘Call the Midwife’ series tackled this in the episode.
I really felt for Lois in the episode. Holly Freeman delivers a brilliant performance and it was gut-wrenching to see the turmoil that Lois goes through as she’s struggling to accept her condition here.
Lois also struggles to tell her family and her husband-to-be about this. She even tears up her wedding dress, which was shocking to see. Lois even goes out unconscious during the stress of it all.
Thankfully Lois’ family including her mother Sarah Belcher as Bronwyn Parry and her sister Jadie Rose Hobson as Nancy Parry support her in this. Her fiancée Joel Robinson as Paul also supports her.
The episode also has a storyline featured in it where a husband – Jack Doolan as George Sharp – suffers inexplicable pains. They’re similar to the pregnancy of his wife – Nancy Sullivan as Pam Sharp.
This was rather odd to see in the episode. I initially assumed that the husband was suffering pains because he had too much bacon from a cafe. I wasn’t certain if this was a thing that really happened.
In the episode, Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane has trouble with her car. Her car soon gets fixed by a mechanic, who was recommended by Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan. Very lucky for that to occur!
In the meantime, Nurse Crane gets car lifts on her rounds by Trevor Cooper as Sergeant Woolf. He’s continuing to express a romantic interest in her, but Nurse Crane doesn’t seem that keen on him. 😐
Leonie Elliot as Lucille also gets to have a romantic subplot featured in the episode. She attracts the attention of the mechanic Zephryn Taitte as Cyril Robinson, who fixes Nurse Crane’s car in the episode.
Cyril does ask Lucille on a dance date, to which she politely declines at first. She later regrets her answer and changes her mind. It was interesting to see how Lucille handled a romantic relationship.
It was also interesting to see how characters like Sister Monica Joan and Nurse Crane encouraged Lucille to pursue a romantic relationship with Cyril in the episode, even when she was reluctant to. 🙂
Eventually, Lucille goes on the dance date with Cyril as he picks her up in a motorbike and side-car, which is how the episode finishes. I couldn’t help think of Wallace & Gromit‘s ‘A Close Shave’ here. 😀
It was nice to see the little subplot where Ella Bruccoleri as Sister Frances overcame her lack of confidence and presented how to bathe a baby in front of people. Jennifer Kirby as Valerie helped. 🙂
Series 8, Episode 5 is an enjoyable episode to watch in the ‘Call the Midwife’ series. It was pretty emotional with Lois Parry’s story and it was intriguing Lucille gradually got to go out on a date with Cyril.
I became intrigued about what was to happen in next week’s episode, especially concerning Lucille’s relationship with Cyril. We were also to be introduced to a new family member of Valerie’s in the show. 🙂
‘Series 8, Episode 5’ rating – 8/10
