Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
Oh dear. ‘The Muppets Mayhem’. This really wasn’t ‘The Muppets’ show I was expecting to see after seeing mostly all of the original ‘Muppet Show’ on Disney+. Now to be fair, ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ has an interesting premise behind it, and I will applaud the show for trying to do something different.
But this is a ‘Muppets’ show on Disney+ that didn’t really do it for me. Mainly because, I feel the idea of doing a musical comedy series featuring Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem was stretched out, even for ten episodes. Also, I’m not someone who’s excited about Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re fine enough as a music band in the Muppets entourage, and it’s nice they get the spotlight for a change. But I don’t think there was enough for me to find the show funny enough. There are occasions where I did laugh at certain jokes, but it wasn’t so much laugh-out-loud humour.
If you’ve enjoyed ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ as a Disney+ series, that’s fine. I can’t blame you for it. But I was expecting perhaps Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie or Gonzo to make a cameo appearance at some point. Maybe at the end of the series? It would have made the viewing experience worthwhile.
Instead, Statler and Waldorf made a cameo appearance in the last episode of the series. How come they got the privilege to appear at the end? Their cameo is funny, no doubt, but I’m wondering why they were there at the series’ end at all. Shouldn’t they be retired from criticising shows and such? 😐
The series itself features Lily Singh as Nora, a junior A&R executive at Wax Town records who tries to get a new music album out from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. But of course, she has to put up with their antics, as they’re trying to come to terms with the modern musical business in the 21st century.
Now, the storyline of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem making a new album. That’s a fine idea. It’s interesting how the band puts together the album with Nora’s help along with Saara Chaudry as Hannah, Nora’s sister, and Tahj Mowry as Moog, an audio engineer and fan of the Electric Mayhem.
But for me, the contemporary aspects of the music industry, including Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem getting acquainted with social media, which causes them to break up at one point, became distracting. It made it less funny and uninspiring whilst watching the series from beginning to end. 😦
There are occasions where there are some nice bits of character development, especially between Nora, Hannah and Moog. This series also has opportunities to showcase the Electric Mayhem characters, including Dr. Teeth, Floyd Pepper, Janice, Noot, Animal and…Lips (I’m not familiar with him).
Animal is the funniest out of the Electric Mayhem gang, especially when he seems to have the hots for Nora in the series. 🙂 It was also intriguing to uncover Dr. Teeth’s backstory in an episode, especially when he meets Floyd for the first time and we get to know his parents, who were dentists.
There’s a Muppet character called Penny Waxman, who happens to be Nora’s boss and Dr. Teeth’s ex-girlfriend. Quite frankly, I didn’t take to her, and the subplot of Dr. Teeth once having a relationship with Penny became distracting. Also, it’s inconsistent how their relationship developed.
It was nice to see guest stars in some of the episodes, including filmmaker Peter Jackson, who directed ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogies and recently directed a three-part documentary called ‘The Beatles: Get Back’, which you can check out on Disney+. There are also guest stars like Ben Schwartz, Morgan Freeman, Cheech Marin, Kevin Smith, Danny Trejo and ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic in the series
So yeah. ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ is a series that didn’t entirely do it for me. I’m glad I’ve seen it and there are some enjoyable things to take away from it. But I would have preferred a ‘Veterinarians’ Hospital’, ‘Pigs In Space’ or a combination of the two in a ‘Muppets’ series rather than this Disney+ show.
By the way, Zoot asked me to take a picture of him at the end of the seventh episode of ‘The Muppets Mayhem’. So, I did. 😀

Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
Tim 🙂

Remembering how much I enjoyed the Muppets, both in The Muppet Show and Sesame Street when I was a kid, and finally outgrowing them when I realized how repetitive much of their formulae can easily be, the closest I came to liking something new enough from Jim Henson’s legacy were Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal. I might occasionally revisit some favorite Muppet classic songs on YouTube, like Kermit’s “It’s Not Easy Being Green” or Grover’s “Alone” which can still thankfully revitalize me emotionally. But it’s interesting to see the powers that be try something significantly different with Jim Henson’s legacy after so long. Thank you, Tim, for your review.

Hi scifimike,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Muppets and their legacy. I’ve not seen ‘Fraggle Rock’ and ‘Dark Crystal’ yet. I’ll have to do a quick review on ‘A Muppet Family Christmas’ sometime, as I know it’s on YouTube and it has the Sesame Street gang and the Fraggle Rock characters in it. It’s always interesting when the Muppets do something different, whether it’s a new film or TV show. I’m sure I’ll be checking out a new Muppets item on Disney+ in the future, whether it’s good or not. I’m glad I’ve seen ‘The Muppets Mayhem’, but it’s not something I would rate highly compared to other ‘Muppets’ shows and films I’ve seen. I’m hoping to revisit ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion’ on Disney+ this Thursday.
Many thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed my review.
Tim 🙂
