‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Oxygen’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Here we are on the fifth episode of Series 10 of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series, starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Pearl Mackie as Bill. And this time, Matt Lucas as Nardole gets to join the Twelfth Doctor and Bill on an adventure for a change. Today’s instalment in the 60th Anniversary Marathon on ‘Bradley’s Basement’ is ‘Oxygen’ by Jamie Mathieson. In previous seasons, Jamie Mathieson wrote ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’ and ‘Flatline’ for Series 8 and he co-wrote ‘The Girl Who Died’ with Steven Moffat for Series 9. I enjoyed Jamie Mathieson’s episodes in Series 8 more than I enjoyed ‘The Girl Who Died’. Does ‘Oxygen’ as a ‘Doctor Who’ episode make up for the disappointment I had with the particular Series 9 episode? Is it as good as the Series 8 ‘Doctor Who’ episodes penned by Jamie Mathieson? Can something of value be taken away from watching ‘Oxygen’? The episode itself ends on a dramatic cliffhanger concerning Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, especially when it leads into the next set of episodes in Series 10. ‘Oxygen’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. ‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘The Girl Who Died’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

We’re back to single episode stories in Series 9 in ‘Doctor Who’, although we have the first of what is considered to be a two-episode story arc linked together by the introduction of a new character in the series. Today, we’re looking at ‘The Girl Who Died’ by Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat. This ‘Doctor Who’ episode has Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara visiting a Viking village where the alien Mire, led by David Schofield (who I’ve heard in ‘The Doomsday Quatrain’) as Odin, make their attack. The titular ‘girl who died’ happens to be Maisie Williams (well-known for being Arya Stark in ‘Games of Thornes’ and I’ve seen her as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane in ‘The New Mutants’) as a Viking girl called Ashildr. This story also features Simon Lipkin (who played Mr. Poppy in ‘Nativity! The Musical’ and has been in the 2018 film ‘Nativity Rocks!’) as Nollarr, one of the Vikings in the Viking village. There’s Ian Conningham as ‘Chuckles’, Tom Stourton as ‘Lofty’, Alistair Parker as ‘Limpy’, Murray McArthur as Hasten, and Barnaby Kay (husband of Nicola Walker who plays Liv Chenka in the Big Finish audios of ‘Doctor Who’) as ‘Heidi’. With Ashildr’s introduction in ‘The Girl Who Died’, she becomes a prominent character for the rest of Series 9. But does she win me over in her debut episode? Does she become a worthwhile character to be enjoyed in the ‘Doctor Who’ TV series? ‘The Girl Who Died’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Flatline’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Here we are on the second of two ‘Doctor Who’ episodes by Jamie Mathieson in Series 8 of the new TV series. It’s time to check out ‘Flatline’, another one of my favourite ‘Doctor Who’ episodes in the Peter Capaldi/Twelfth Doctor era. In the episode, Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald discover that something has gone wrong with the TARDIS when they arrive in present-day Bristol. The space-and-time machine has been shrunk to size. The Doctor finds himself trapped inside the TARDIS and Clara must carry him in the TARDIS around in her handbag. There are also two-dimensional extraterrestrial creatures, which the Doctor eventually dubs the Boneless, causing trouble in Bristol. Clara acquires the help of a Jovian Wade as graffiti artist Rigsy, who makes his debut in the ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. Clara temporarily takes over the Doctor’s role of trying to protect humanity from alien incursions whilst investigating the Boneless. There’s another cameo of Samuel Anderson as Danny Pink, and there’s a cameo of Michelle Gomez as the mysterious Missy. ‘Flatline’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s time to check out the first of two ‘Doctor Who’ episodes in Series 8 of the new TV series by Jamie Mathieson. This is ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’ (one of my favourite episodes in Series 8), where Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor takes Jenna Coleman as Clara on a trip to visit the Orient Express…in outer space! Wow!!! 😀 But murders are occurring aboard the Orient Express, since a mummy called the Foretold, played by Jamie Hill, appears to its victims before it kills them. This ‘Doctor Who’ episode features special guest stars like Frank Skinner (who appeared in ‘The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot’ by Peter Davison) as chief engineer Perkins on board the Orient Express. There’s David Bamber as Captain Quell, Christopher Villiers as Professor Moorhouse and the late John Sessions (who I’ve heard in ‘Castle of Fear’ and ‘100’) is the voice of Gus. 😐 Janet Henfrey (who was in ‘The Curse of Fenric’) appears briefly as Mrs. Pitt at the episode’s beginning. There’s a singer aboard the Orient Express that’s played by real-life singer Foxes. And there’s another cameo of Samuel Anderson as Danny Pink in the episode. ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’ can be checked out on DVD, Blu-ray and BBC iPlayer. Continue reading

It’s time for another outer-space adventure with the Doctor, Bill and Nardole. This adventure has them in space suits and being chased by zombies aboard a space station. But the Doctor risks his life to save Bill that causes him to go blind. Will the Doctor gain his sight back and will things be clearer towards the end of the episode? 😀 Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ Marathon – ‘The Girl Who Died’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

This ‘Doctor Who’ episode features the first appearance of Maisie Williams (from ‘Game of Thrones’) as Ashildr. This could’ve been the beginning of a great story arc featuring Ashildr as a ‘Doctor Who’ character with Peter Capald’s Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s Clara. Well…it does starts okay in this episode. Continue reading

‘Doctor Who’ Marathon – ‘Flatline’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Here is the second contribution by Jamie Mathieson to Series 8 of ‘Doctor Who’! This is ‘Flatline’ and the Doctor’s TARDIS gets shrunk to size. Clara gets to be the Doctor for a change, has a companion called Rigsy and puts the TARDIS in her handbag. Will our main heroes defeat the menace of the Boneless? Continue reading

This is one of my favourite episodes in Series 8 of ‘Doctor Who’ and it’s the first writing contribution by Jamie Mathieson. This is ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’ and the Doctor takes Clara to visit the Orient Express in outer space. There’s also a murder mystery going on with a mummy-like figure killing people.
