‘THE CHANGING FACE OF EVIL’ (DS9)

Please feel free to comment on my review.

The fourth episode of this nine-part ‘final chapter’ in the ‘DS9’ series begins with Ezri and Worf returning safely to DS9 where Bashir, O’Brien and Sisko greet them. But the reunion is short-lived. 😦

Soon, the Breen make their alliance with the Dominion known by attacking Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth. Sisko and J. G. Hertzler as General Martok watch this happen on the newsfeed.

Sisko becomes concerned for the safety of his wife, Penny Johnson as Kasidy who goes out into space as a freighter captain. Sisko tries to pull strings to get Kasidy time off from her job in the story.

Kasidy gets wind of this and protests to Sisko, reminding him that her job is just as important to her as his is to him. He later apologises and cancels his request. Kasidy does forgive Sisko in the episode.

I found it amusing when Odo and Quark were watching Sisko and Kasidy arguing with each other in Odo’s office. Quark reminds Odo that this could happen to him should he and Kira ever get married.

Meanwhile on Cardassia, Casey Biggs plots to free Cardassia from Dominion, meeting up with fellow Cardassians in the process. He does his best to make sure Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun is unaware of it.

I’ll get back to Damar’s plotting against the Dominion later. Elsewhere on Bajor, Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat posing as ‘Anjohl Tennan’ persuades Louise Fletcher as Kai Winn to read a very forbidden text.

This happens to be the Book of the Kosst Amjoan which contains secret information how to release the Pah-wraiths. James Otis as Solbor isn’t happy about this as he reluctantly brings the book to her.

To her surprise, Winn finds the pages inside the book blank. Winn works hard to try and find the answer on why the book’s pages are blank, receiving support from ‘Anjohl’ while Solbor’s worried. 😐

As Solbor becomes suspicious of Winn’s interest in evil texts and her new companion’s influence on her, he does some investigating. How he managed to find the information he wanted isn’t very clear.

Essentially, he reveals to Winn that ‘Anjohl’ is actually Gul Dukat. Winn is horrified to learn the truth, though I am surprised nobody could hear the voice to work out that ‘Anjohl’ was actually Gul Dukat.

As Solbor learns the truth that Winn and Dukat have been trying to release the Pah-wraiths, he’s soon killed by Winn. His blood soon drips on the Book of the Kosst Amjoan. It makes the text visible.

I don’t know what’s going to happen in this Winn/Dukat storyline where they’re about to release the Pah-wraiths. Will Winn trust Dukat knowing his true identity? It doesn’t look to be very encouraging.

With the Breen now allies of the Dominion, they attempt to retake the Chin’toka star system, which the Federation captured in ‘Tears of the Prophets’. The Federation retaliates back against them here.

Sisko commands the Defiant to fight against the Dominion-Breen alliance in the battle. But in the ensuing battle, the Defiant, among many ships, gets destroyed by a new weapon made by the Breen.

Thankfully Sisko and his crew escape in their escape pods. Kira, Bashir, Worf, Ezri, O’Brien and Aron Eisenberg are among the Defiant crew. Salome Jens as the Female Changeling allows them to flee. 😐

She hopes that the Federation’s reports on the battle against the Dominion-Breen alliance with have a demoralising effect. She’s unaware though that the Dominion is soon to be betrayed by Cardassia.

Back at DS9, as the Federation tries to regroup from their devastating loss, Sisko, Kira, Barry Jenner as Admiral Ross and many others view a public message from Damar about Cardassia’s new position.

Damar announces that Cardassia will now revolt against the Dominion. The rebellion begins with the destruction of a Vorta cloning facility. That means there won’t be any more clones of Weyoun made.

Sisko sees that Damar’s rebellion may be the key to the Federation’s chance of defeating the Dominion. It gives everyone on DS9 a sense of reassurance that all is not lost in the Dominion War. 🙂

It also means that the Female Changeling and Weyoun are angry with Damar’s treachery as well as many other Cardassians. I wonder how things will continue in the following instalment of this arc. 😐
