Hello everyone! 🙂
Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!
For Christmas this year, whilst I got my Mum the Blu-ray of ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, my Dad got her a couple of other films starring Tom Cruise. One of them was an extended version of the 2010 film ‘Knight and Day’ with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
Technically, I’ve reviewed this film in one of my Disney+ Roundups back in 2023. It was great to see this film again on DVD. As it’s the extended cut of the film I’ve seen lately, I decided to do an ‘extended cut’ of my review of ‘Knight and Day’ on ‘Bradley’s Basement’. 😀
The extended cut of ‘Knight and Day’ isn’t really that different compared to seeing the theatrical cut on Disney+ and Netflix. At the time of this review, ‘Knight and Day’ are still on Disney+ and Netflix in the UK as well as on Amazon Prime Video, which is astonishing.
Essentially, the extended cut includes eight minutes more footage, mostly extending scenes and featuring a new opening that establishes Cameron Diaz’s character of June Haven as a car restorer a lot better compared to how the original theatrical cut did things.
Not that I would have noticed that, as I only saw ‘Knight and Day’ once via Netflix back in 2023. It was still refreshing to see the film in its extended form, especially in establishing Cameron Diaz’s character and how she meets up with Tom Cruise’s character in the film.
‘Knight and Day’ is a fun and action-packed film. It could easily be mistaken for being a ‘Mission: Impossible’ film, especially with Tom Cruise in it. It’s surreal to find Tom Cruise in ‘Knight and Day’, having seen him in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies over the years. 🙂
It’s also surreal to see Cameron Diaz in ‘Knight and Day’, knowing her as the voice of Princess Fiona in the ‘Shrek’ movies. ‘Knight and Day’ is a film that fits in Cameron Diaz’s league, since she was in the 2000 and 2003 ‘Charlie’s Angels’ films with Drew Barrymore.
‘Knight and Day’ is the second film where Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have worked together, as they previously did the 2001 film ‘Vanilla Sky’. Having seen that film this year, I can honestly say that I enjoyed ‘Knight and Day’ more than I enjoyed ‘Vanilla Sky’. 🙂
Whilst ‘Knight and Day’ is a fast-paced film with plenty of action going on, it’s somehow easier to follow than ‘Vanilla Sky’, especially in its extended form. You don’t have to worry about trying to understand ‘Knight and Day’. You can go in and have fun seeing this film. 🙂
It’s fascinating that James Mangold is the director of ‘Knight and Day’, as he would go on to direct ‘The Wolverine’, ‘Logan’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’. At this point, I’ve yet to see ‘Logan’ and do in-depth reviews on that and on the ‘Indiana Jones’ movies.
‘Knight and Day’ is pretty enjoyable when the film is about Cameron Diaz as June Havens who ends up caught with Tom Cruise as secret agent Roy Miller, who’s on the run from the CIA. There are a lot of mad moments featured throughout the film, which made me laugh.
It’s funny when Cameron Diaz as June finds herself out of her depth when meeting Tom Cruise as Roy. I liked it when June finds herself falling for Roy and she helps him out when he’s trying to deliver a powerful battery and protect it from those who are trying to kill him. 🙂
The moments where June is happy whilst being questioned as she had a truth serum inside her in Spain were funny to watch, as she doesn’t seem to care when being threatened. I found it very sweet when June asked Don whether he was happy to see her and he kissed her in reply.
The film’s cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard as John Fitzgerald, Viola Davis as CIA Director Isabel George, Jordi Mollà as Antonio Quintana and Paul Dano as Simon Feck. It was very nice to see Gal Gadot as Naomi in the film before she went on to play Wonder Woman.
To think that Gal Gadot was in ‘Knight and Day’ before she played Wonder Woman in the ‘DC Extended Universe’ films is so surreal. I’m surprised she didn’t have more scenes in ‘Knight and Day’, as she only did one scene with Tom Cruise when meeting up with him.
Speaking of DC superhero films, Peter Sarsagaard and Paul Dano have been in the 2022 film ‘The Batman’, playing Gil Colson and the Riddler respectively. Viola Davis has played Amanda Waller in the ‘Suicide Squad’ movies and in ‘Black Adam’ in the ‘DCEU’.
Jordi Mollà has also played a character Castillo in the 2015 film ‘Ant-Man’, though his scenes in that film were deleted but are available on Blu-ray. It’s funny how some of these actors went on to be in the Marvel and DC superhero films after being in ‘Knight and Day’.
‘Knight and Day’ is a fun-filled action-packed movie with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. I’m glad my parents and I saw this film again in its extended form on DVD recently and I’m pleased I’ve been able to extend my thoughts on the film for this latest review on my blog.
Incidentally, when the extended cut of ‘Knight and Day’ on DVD was released in 2010, apparently, you can put the disc into your computer to create a digital copy of the film so that you can see it on your computer, your tablet or your phone. How times have changed!
This was the case for ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ film released on DVD in 2011, although that had a separate disc for it. This was the case for 20th Century Fox films released on DVD in 2010 and 2011 where the special features became less and less. 😦
Thanks for reading!
Bye for now!
Tim 🙂

I haven’t seen this one. Although knowing what a durable action star Tom Cruise is, I’m sure he was another good one to remember him for. Thanks, Tim, for your review.

Hi scifimike,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I greatly enjoyed seeing ‘Knight and Day’ in extended form. I’ve also seen ‘American Made’ with Tom Cruise recently. Whilst that has been fascinating to check out, I can say I enjoyed it on the same level as I’ve enjoyed ‘Knight and Day’ recently.
Best wishes,
Tim 🙂
