Quick Movie Review – ‘Snow White’ (2025)

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

So, I’ve seen the 2025 live-action remake of Disney‘s ‘Snow White’. This has been a fascinating film to check out, especially in terms of the build-up to its release. I enjoyed checking out the new ‘Snow White’ film. I found it an invigorating take on the classic story.

I must admit, I didn’t think a live-action remake of the 1937 film ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ was ever going to happen. Not because it didn’t have potential to be remade, but I wondered if it would happen due the original film being special in Disney terms.

The 1937 ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ film is very important in film history, as it was the first full-length animated film ever made at that time. As far as I’m concerned, no animated follow-up to it occurred, even in the days of direct-to-video Disney film sequels.

There might have been cameos here and there, but there was never an animated sequel to 1937’s ‘Snow White’. Therefore, I assumed no-one wanted to continue the legacy that the original Disney ‘Snow White’ had in animation or in live-action. How very wrong I was?

Before the release of 2025’s ‘Snow White’, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the film, such as the colour-blind casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White, the story changes, Rachel Zegler’s public critiques of the original film, and the CGI reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs.

It was hard to avoid the public reaction and negativity to the controversial aspects of the film, but I was determined to check out the 2025 ‘Snow White’ film at the cinema. I wanted to give this film a fair chance and find out whether it was worth my attention.

And to be honest with you, I found this is a very good live-action version of the ‘Snow White’ story. It’s not perfect and the 1937 ‘Snow White’ film will always be very special to me. But I can’t help like the 2025 live-action film and found some enjoyable aspects to it.

What interested me about this film is that it’s directed by Marc Webb, the guy who directed the two ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films with Andrew Garfield. I enjoyed his take on ‘Snow White’ and liked how he balanced the romantic elements with new story elements.

In the film, the pure-hearted Snow White joins forces with the Seven Dwarfs and meets a bandit named Jonathan, whom she falls in love with. They help Snow White to free her kingdom from her cruel stepmother, which I found a refreshing approach to the story. 🙂

I found Rachel Zegler very good as Snow White in the film. This is the second time I’ve seen Rachel Zegler in a film, as she was in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, which I saw at the cinema in March 2023. There’s also Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Snow White’s stepmother.

It was interesting to see Gal Gadot play a villain in this film, as she’s well-known for playing Wonder Woman in the ‘DC Extended Universe’ films. In fact, Gal Gadot did a cameo as Wonder Woman in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ that Rachel Zegler appeared in. 😀

Andrew Burnap stars as Jonathan, Snow White’s love interest in the film. I quite like how the 2025 film tackled the love story angle between Snow White and Jonathan, especially by having them actually interacting with each other and them getting to know each other.

There’s Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, who was ordered to kill Snow White, and there’s the Magic Mirror, voiced by Patrick Page. There might issues concerning changes to the story and characters, but the performances of the cast are very good throughout this 2025 film.

Whilst I have no issue with Rachel Zegler’s casting as Snow White, I’m not very keen on the CGI dwarfs, including Doc (voiced by Jeremy Swift), Grumpy (voiced by Martin Klebba), Happy (voiced by George Salazar), Sleepy (voiced by Andy Grotelueschen), Sneezy (voiced by Jason Kravits), Bashful (voiced by Tituss Burgess) and Dopey (voiced by Andrew Barth Feldman 😐 ). They just weren’t real for me, as I think it would’ve been better to have had real actors playing them.

If ‘The Hobbit’ films, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films, and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ films can actually have real-life actors performing dwarf characters, whether it’d be using forced perspective, scale doubles or small actors, why couldn’t ‘Snow White’ have them?

I think there might one of Jonathan’s band of bandits who might actually be mistaken for a dwarf considering he seems small when watching him on the big screen. I know some actors with dwarvism have criticised the decision of using CGI dwarfs instead of real dwarfs. 😐

Also, I’m not that keen on Dopey having a voice towards the end of the film. It deviates from what was in the original film with Dopey not talking. Plus, I don’t find the CGI dwarfs as memorable as the ones featured in the animated film with their own personality traits.

I will say that some of the music and songs featured in the film are pretty good. I enjoyed the new versions of ‘Heigh Ho’ and ‘Whistle While You Work’ when watching the film. It’s also very interesting to see the dwarfs singing with Snow White in ‘Whistle While You Work’.

So, the 2025 ‘Snow White’ film has been a very enjoyable and enlightening new take on the ‘Snow White’ story by Disney. I wouldn’t say it’s perfect, but there were things I liked about it more than I disliked about it and the performances of the cast are very good in it. 🙂

The CGI dwarfs are an issue for me, but I hope to explore more of these issues when it comes to doing an in-depth analysis and evaluation of the 2025 film on my blog, which I hope will be soon. In the meantime, I’m very pleased to have seen the 2025 ‘Snow White’ film at last.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

      Hi Markthuis,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on 2025’s ‘Snow White’. Glad you enjoyed the film as well as me. I’m very pleased you enjoyed my review on the film. I hope to see 2025’s ‘Snow White’ again soon sometime in April. Despite controversies surrounding the film, Rachel Zelger stands out well for me as Snow White. I’m pleased the film has been favoured by audiences more than critics. The film is likely to divide opinion, but I still enjoyed the film on its own merits than disadvantages.

      Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂
