Blu-ray Review – ‘The Underwater Menace’ (Doctor Who)

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Today, I’m sharing my updated review on the ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘The Underwater Menace’. This updated review is based on the latest in a line of mostly missing black-and-white ‘Doctor Who’ TV stories from the 1960s that have been animated on DVD and Blu-ray for today. The story stars Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Anneke Wills as Polly Wright, Michael Craze as Ben Jackson and Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon. This story also features Joseph Fürst as the titular ‘underwater menace’ – Professor Zaroff.

Originally, I reviewed ‘The Underwater Menace’ in 2017 where it was a hybrid of two telesnap reconstructions for ‘Episodes 1 and 4’ and the two surviving ‘Episodes 2 and 3’ on the 2015 DVD release. I’ve now seen the story, which is available in the 2023 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets, via its black-and-white animation recreations for ‘Episodes 1 and 4’ and the two surviving ‘Episodes 2 and 3’. It’s been nice to revisit this ‘Doctor Who’ story with a hybrid of animation and live-action episodes, and I’ve especially enjoyed revisiting the ‘A Fishy Tale’ behind-the-scenes making-of documentary, narrated by Peter Davison (who plays the Fifth Doctor in the TV series and the Big Finish audios).

Please feel free to check out, read and comment on my updated review for ‘The Underwater Menace’ by clicking on the link for it. You can purchase the DVD and/or Blu-ray sets of ‘The Underwater Menace’ either from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com.

Enjoy!

Bye for now!

Tim. 🙂

      Hi Susan,

I’m currently working on updating my reviews on Season 9 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. Hopefully, they’ll be available by the time we get to October. I’m planning to check out the omnibus edition of ‘The Sea Devils’ before I get onto updating my review on the story. Stay tuned for October.

      Many thanks and Best wishes,

      Tim 🙂

I’m currently writing up my updated review on ‘The Sea Devils’ as we speak. Looking forward to revisiting ‘The Mutants’ next week.

        Best wishes,

        Tim 🙂
