‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Reflection on the Twelfth Doctor

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Like Matt Smith, I’ve found Peter Capaldi’s era of ‘Doctor Who’ to be a mixed bag overall. No doubt Peter Capaldi is a good actor, and he does very well with the material he’s given as the Twelfth Doctor. But for me, a lot of the storytelling by the showrunner Steven Moffat feels very inconsistent.

I think Peter Capaldi’s third season as the Twelfth Doctor – Series 10 – is the best out of the three he did compared to his first two seasons – Series 8 and 9. I believe Peter Capaldi found his way with playing the Twelfth Doctor as a grumpy old man wanting to do what’s right, be decent and be kind. 🙂

For me, Jenna Coleman as Clara works better as a companion with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor as opposed to Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, since her character development became inconsistent by Series 9. Pearl Mackie as Bill is best suited to Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, as they get on so well together.

Matt Lucas as Nardole often has his ups and downs as a Twelfth Doctor companion. I preferred it when he was being serious, especially when he berated the Doctor at the end of ‘Oxygen’. When the comedic aspects of Matt Lucas came into play, they were very distracting and often unfunny for me.

I’ve grown to like Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor when revisiting his TV seasons. I enjoyed revisiting Series 10 in 2020 when I did my own take on the Twelfth Doctor and Bill for the ‘Zorbius’ story ‘The Saviour of the Daleks’. I’ve even included them in my 60th anniversary story ‘The Thirteen+ Doctors’.

It’s nice that Big Finish have been able to do more Twelfth Doctor stories on audio, particularly in ‘The Twelfth Doctor Chronicles’ range with Jacob Dudman playing the character. Only time will tell as to whether Peter Capaldi will be able to reprise his role as the Twelfth Doctor in the audio stories.

Peter Capaldi’s era of ‘Doctor Who’ hasn’t been the most satisfying of eras for me, especially when Steven Moffat was in the charge. But it has been an interesting era to check out. I’ve been able to enjoy more of the Twelfth Doctor’s stories following Peter Capaldi’s exit from the TV show in 2017. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
