‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Reflection on the Eleventh Doctor

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Matt Smith’s era as the Eleventh Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’ is one I have mixed feelings about. On reflection, being the first of two ‘Doctor Who’ eras run by Steven Moffat, I’ve enjoyed Matt Smith’s era more than Peter Capaldi’s. I’ve grown to like Matt Smith’s version of the Doctor over the years. 🙂

It took a while for me to get into Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor after enjoying David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor. By the time Series 7 came along, I was able to get into his interpretation of the character. In my humble opinion, Series 5 is Matt Smith’s strongest season and Series 7 is his second-best season.

Series 6, for me, is the weakest season of the Eleventh Doctor era. Due to how Steven Moffat handled the storytelling in Series 6, it became the most convoluted season I’d ever seen in the new TV series. The concepts are good, but their execution is iffy. It became a jigsaw puzzle of a season. 😦

Over time, I grew to enjoy Matt Smith’s interaction with Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory as his ‘Doctor Who’ companions. By Series 7, I became really invested in them as characters. River Song’s involvement was disappointing, but I enjoyed the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory trio. 🙂

The chapter that featured the Eleventh Doctor with Clara Oswald was a welcome relief for me. I enjoyed the chemistry shared between Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman as their characters. I would have liked to have seen more of them, even though over half of Series 7 is very dedicated to them.

I’ve had a chance to do my own take on the Eleventh Doctor era through the ‘Zorbius’ story ‘The Horror of Time’, featuring the Eleventh Doctor and Clara. I’ve written the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory in my Fifth Doctor story ‘The Prime Factor’ and quite lately in my upcoming ‘Thirteen+ Doctors’ special.

Big Finish have been able to tell new Eleventh Doctor stories on audio, with Jacob Dudman narrating and performing the Eleventh Doctor in them. I hope that Matt Smith will get to reprise the Eleventh Doctor on audio someday. It’d be nice to explore more aspects of his Doctor that he didn’t get to portray on TV.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
