‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – 2008-2010 Specials Summary

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Despite them not being an actual season (technically they’re part of Series 4), the 2008-2010 Specials of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series could be argued as being David Tennant’s fifth season of ‘Doctor Who’. This is despite him not having a regular companion accompanying him in the specials.

‘Planet of the Dead’ could be argued as being a decent season opener, especially with the introduction of Michelle Ryan as Lady Christina de Souza. I would have liked a season featuring the Tenth Doctor and Christina on adventures together. A pity Big Finish have not followed that through.

‘The End of Time’ can also be considered as the finale of a ‘Doctor Who’ season; especially with it being a two-parter, David Tennant’s Doctor battling against John Simm’s Master, and of course being the closing story of not just the David Tennant/Tenth Doctor era, but also the Russell T. Davies era. 🙂

The 2008-2010 Specials showcase the best of David Tennant’s time as the Tenth Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. As well as ‘Planet of the Dead’ and ‘The End of Time’, ‘The Next Doctor’ illustrates how David Tennant’s Doctor can cope well in tackling Cybermen, especially at Christmas time in Victorian London. 🙂

‘The Waters of Mars’ also illustrates the range of emotions David Tennant’s Doctor can project, especially in being concerned about the fate of the Bowie Base One crew on Mars and how it led to his dark path in becoming the Time Lord Victorious. It features one of David’s best performances.

The 2008-2010 Specials of ‘Doctor Who’ represent a special time for me as a ‘Doctor Who’ fan. I regard the David Tennant/Russell T. Davies era fondly and highly, as my inspiration for ‘Doctor Who’ writing came from that era. In my opinion, the David Tennant/RTD era is a classic era of the TV show.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

It was an interesting way for RTD to end his original run of Dr. Who on. Quite a change from the episodic format and I think that sometimes it might still work for the show. Thank you, Tim.

      Hi scifimike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the 2008-2010 Specials of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. I recall checking out a lot of the Big Finish audios to fill in the absence of a ‘Doctor Who’ season in 2009 as well as ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’ and Series 3 of ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’. I’m glad David Tennant guest-starred in ‘The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith’ in that season of ‘SJA’ and it was nice to see the animated adventure called ‘Dreamland’ at the time. I must get around to reviewing those spin-off shows and specials someday.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
