‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Series 3 Summary

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Series 3 of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series is the Martha Jones season in the David Tennant/Tenth Doctor era. It’s not a season that I would rate as highly as I’ve rated David Tennant’s first and third seasons, but there are some enjoyable gems featured throughout Series 3 which I’ve enjoyed a lot. 🙂

Notably, I’ve enjoyed the two-part ‘Daleks In Manhattan’/’Evolution of the Daleks’ story. There’s also the three-part ‘Utopia’/’The Sound of Drums’/’Last of the Time Lords’ story, which features the return of the Master, first played by Derek Jacobi and later by John Simm. Both stories are worthwhile.

Freema Agyeman as Martha works well with David Tennant’s Doctor, though the relationship between them is that of an unrequited love story. Martha is into the Tenth Doctor whilst he’s getting over the loss of Rose. The friendship that Martha earns from the Doctor develops gradually. 😐

For the most part, Martha keeps her TARDIS travels a secret from her family, which ultimately leads to a lot of suffering once the Master has taken over the Earth in the Year That Never Was. Martha proves her mettle in stories like ‘The Lazarus Experiment’, ’42’ and ‘Human Nature’/’The Family of Blood’. 🙂

The Tenth Doctor continues to get better in terms of a character, thanks to David Tennant’s acting talents and how the scripts are well-written for him. It was fascinating to see him as a human in ‘Human Nature’/’The Family of the Blood’ and how his relationship with the Master unveiled in the three-part season finale.

I like how classic ‘Doctor Who’ monsters and villains are introduced in the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. First, we had the Daleks introduced in Series 1, then we had the Cybermen introduced in Series 2, and here we have the Master introduced in Series 3. The introductions to these villains feel quite natural. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

For the first season without Rose, Martha would prove to be a significantly good match for the 10th Doctor as Donna also would. As with any second season for a new Doctor, the hopes for giving fans some particularly new and good stories are essential. Bringing back the Master was clearly a most successful move. Thank you, Tim, for your summary.

      Hi scifimike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Series 3 of the new ‘Doctor Who’ TV series. I like how this season did things when coping without Rose for the first time and Martha and Donna proved to be great companions for the Tenth Doctor in the new TV series. Yes, having the Master return in Series 3 was certainly a masterstroke, especially when checking out ‘Utopia’/’The Sounds of Drums’/’Last of the Time Lords’.

      Many thanks for your comments.

      Tim 🙂
