‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Reflection on the Seventh Doctor

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Like the Colin Baker/Sixth Doctor era, the Sylvester McCoy/Seventh Doctor era of ‘Doctor Who’ is arguably one of the shortest eras in the series. This was due to the increasing pressure made by the BBC in terms of scheduling the TV programme that eventually led to the show’s cancellation in 1989.

With that said, Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor has also enjoyed a long-lasting life in other mediums, including the Big Finish audios, the Virgin Publishing/BBC Books adventures and the ‘Doctor Who Magazine’ comic adventures. This occurred even during the early 1990s period following 1989.

In my opinion, there are three stages of the Seventh Doctor’s journey as a character. He started off as a clownish and impish figure in Season 24 before he developed into a master manipulator by Season 26. He became older by the time ‘The TV Movie’ came along, which we will get to very soon.

I’ve enjoyed Sylvester McCoy’s take on the Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’. I can’t say I’m won over by many of the stories of his TV era, but I’ve been able to enjoy more exploration of his character through the Big Finish audios. Much like the Sixth Doctor, the Seventh Doctor has had many companions by his side.

As well as Mel and Ace, the Seventh Doctor has been joined by Raine Creevy, played by Beth Chalmers in the Big Finish audios. There’s Professor Bernice Summerfield, played by Lisa Bowerman in the Big Finish audios. And there’s Thomas Hector ‘Hex’ Schofield, played by Philip Olivier in the Big Finish audios. 🙂

Some of these ‘Doctor Who’ companions were introduced in the book adventures, including Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, played by Travis Oliver and Yasmin Bannerman in the Big Finish audios. I’ve had a chance to do my take on the Seventh Doctor by writing stories featuring him on ‘Bradley’s Basement’.

They include ‘The Space Car’, featuring the Seventh Doctor and Ace, as well as the ‘Zorbius’ story ‘The Game of Delta’. I’m also pleased I’ve been able to meet Sylvester McCoy and his companions like Sophie Aldred, Bonnie Langford, Lisa Bowerman and Philip Oliver at conventions over the years. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂

The 7th Doctor could seem cold in his own authoritative nature when dealing with cosmic villainy, which made his drama with Ace most uniquely watchable. So it was refreshing when McGann for the second young Doctor after Davison could revitalize the niceness of the role. For anyone with a natural love for Doctor/companion chemistry, Sylvester and Sophie are fondly remembered for an acceptable-at-the-time closure for the classic series. Thank you, Tim, for your summary.

      Hi scifimike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Seventh Doctor era of ‘Doctor Who’. I’m glad you enjoyed my summary of it. It’s been interesting to check out the Seventh Doctor era through the TV series as well as in the Big Finish audios. It’s always a pleasure to check out these stories, whether it’s revisiting them on DVD, Blu-ray or Britbox or whether it’s checking out a new story on audio featuring Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Bonnie Langford, who are excellent at playing their characters.

      Many thanks,

      Tim 🙂
