Disney+ Roundup – ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’, ‘Super Buddies’ & ‘Space Buddies’

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

It’s that time again for another Disney+ Roundup. I’ll soon be sharing a quick review on ‘Ms. Marvel’ on my blog, but for now, let’s talk about the three latest movies I saw on Disney+. Interestingly, each of the three movies I’ve seen lately are a part of a film series that I’ve not seen every entry of yet. 😀

The first film is ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’. This is a sci-fi comedy film that was released in 1969. I enjoyed this film, as it stars Kurt Russell, who would go on to appear in films like ‘Sky High’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. There’s also Cesar Romero – the Joker from 1960’s ‘Batman’.

Kurt Russell plays Dexter Reilly, a Medfield College student who accidentally transforms from a half-wit to a genius in an electrifying computer mishap. Cesar Romero plays A. J. Arno, a businessman running a gambling ring. Arno and his gangsters kidnap Dexter, and they get him to work for them. 😐

Apparently, ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’ is one of several films made by Disney to use the Medfield College setting. It was first used in the 1961 film ‘The Absent-Minded Professor’, which I recently saw this year. ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’ is the first of the ‘Dexter Riley’ film series.

I enjoyed ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’ and it was funny to see Kurt Russell play Dexter Riley as someone who had the brain of a computer. There are comedic moments, including a chase scene where Dexter is rescued by his friends whilst Arno and his gangsters are chasing them in their car. 😀

The film also has Joe Flynn as Dean Higgins, William Schallert as Professor Quigley and Alan Hewitt as Dean Collingsgood. The entire cast are very entertaining, and it was nice to see this 1960s film on Disney+. It’s not like ‘That Darn Cat!’, but I liked the creative aspects in the film, especially with a super-smart boy at a high school. 🙂

On Good Friday this year, my parents and I saw ‘Super Buddies’, a 2013 superhero comedy film. This happens to be the seventh instalment of the ‘Air Buddies’ film series as well as the fourteenth film of the ‘Air Bud’ franchise. I previously reviewed ‘The ‘Santa Paws’ Trilogy’ as a part of that franchise. 😀

In ‘Super Buddies’, the five Buddies pups, including Budderball, Buddha, RoseBud, B-Dawg and MudBud, find five magical rings from the planet Inspiron, which gives each of them unique superpowers. The five magical rings could have easily been the sources of power for Power Rangers. 😀

Budderball gets super-strength, Buddha gets mind-control, RoseBud gets super-speed, B-Dawg gets super-elasticity and MudBud gets invisibility. The five Buddies work together, with the help of Megasis/Captain Canine, to stop a power-hungry extraterrestrial warlord named Commander Drex.

I enjoyed the comic book superhero aspects of this film, and it was fun to see how the five Buddies pups get to have superpowers. The film features John Ratzenberger (well-known for being in ‘Cheers’ and he’s voiced Hamm in the ‘Toy Story’ films) and he plays Marvin ‘Gramps’ Livingstone. 🙂

The film features the voice talents of Colin Hanks (Yes, that’s Tom Hanks’ son) as Megasis/Captain Canine as well as Amy Sedaris, Debra Jo Rupp and Zendaya. Yes, before Zendaya became well-known as Michelle (‘MJ’) in the ‘MCU Spider-Man’ movies, she was a voice for one of the ‘Buddies’ movies.

After enjoying ‘Super Buddies’, my parents and I checked out another ‘Buddies’ film on Disney+. Last Friday, my parents and I saw ‘Space Buddies’. This was third film in the ‘Air Buddies’ film series and it’s a sci-fi comedy film that was released in 2009. I did enjoy watching ‘Space Buddies’ when I saw it.

In the film, Buddha, Budderball, RoseBud, B-Dawg and MudBud end up going aboard a shuttle that flies off to outer space. The five Buddies find themselves having space adventures that first takes them to a space station. They meet this Russian dog called Sputnik, who they become friends with. 🙂

Sputnik joins the Buddies and they end up visiting the moon where it’s ‘one small step for dog, one giant leap for dog-kind’. I didn’t make that up. That’s what said in the film. It even says so on the DVD cover! 😀 The Buddies and Sputnik soon have a challenge to return to Earth, and they receive help from a ferret named Gravity. 😀

Gravity happens to be voiced by Amy Sedaris, who later went on to voice a character in ‘Super Buddies’ as well as star in ‘The Mandalorian’. She’s also been in ‘Elf’. This film also features Diedrich Bader who plays Yuri, the Russian cosmonaut aboard the space station. He goes a bit crazy in this. 😀

It was amusing when the villain – Kevin Weisman as Dr. Finkel – got exposed for sabotaging the space project and he was captured by a security guard, who ran in rather strangely and funnily in the film. 😀 Thankfully, the five Buddies and Sputnik return to Earth safely, after having thrilling adventures. 🙂

I greatly enjoyed watching these three films on Disney+ lately. The two ‘Buddies’ movies, including ‘Super Buddies’ and ‘Space Buddies’, are the ones I enjoyed the most. Whilst ‘The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes’ is a fun 1960s film, the two ‘Buddies’ films were entertaining and quite harmless to watch.

Stay tuned for another Disney+ Roundup on ‘Bradley’s Basement’ soon. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
