‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Marathon – Season 5 Summary

Hello everyone! 🙂

Welcome to ‘Bradley’s Basement’ blog and I’m Tim Bradley!

Season 5 of the classic ‘Doctor Who’ TV series is what you might regard as ‘the monster season’, featuring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie and Deborah Watling as Victoria. It would have been really good if Debbie Watling had been in all seven stories of Season 5. 🙂

Almost about every story in Season 5 of ‘Doctor Who’ features a monster. With ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’, it has the Cybermen; with ‘The Abominable Snowmen’, it has the Yeti; with ‘The Ice Warriors’, it has…well, them ( 😀 ), and ‘The Web of Fear’ has the Yeti appearing for a second time. 🙂

Whilst ‘The Enemy of the World’ didn’t have a rubber-suited monster in it, it had Patrick Troughton playing the villainous Salamander, which must have been great fun for him to play. ‘Fury From The Deep’ had a seaweed monster in it and ‘The Wheel In Space’ had the Cybermen return once again. 🙂

For a long while, most of the stories in Season 5 have been missing. Thankfully, most of the gaps have been filled in. ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ was recovered in the 1990s…in Hong Kong of all places. ‘The Enemy of the World’ and all but one episode of ‘The Web of Fear’ were found in 2013. 🙂

Certain episodes of stories in Season 5 have been animated to fill in the gaps, including all of ‘The Abominable Snowmen’, two episodes of ‘The Ice Warriors’, one episode of ‘The Web of Fear’, and all of ‘Fury From The Deep’. Only two episodes of ‘The Wheel In Space’ are in existence from the BBC. 😦

Whilst Wendy Padbury took over from Debbie Watling at the end of Season 5, this is mostly Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling’s season of ‘Doctor Who’. The trio got on well with each other, and it’s clear Debbie Watling enjoyed working with Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines.

Thanks for reading!

Bye for now!

Tim 🙂
